Vivo X50 series announced with unique gimbal-stabilized camera

Vivo has announced its flagship X50 smartphone lineup today with a unique gimbal-style camera at its rear. This is the Chinese company's first flagship smartphone of 2020 and it comes with a number of new and unique features. In total, the X50 lineup comprises of three models: the X50, X50 Pro, and X50 Pro+.

The highlight of the Vivo X50 Pro+ is its 50MP 1/1.3-inch ISOCELL GN1 sensor. This Samsung sensor was announced by the company just last month and it offers both Tetracell and Dual-Pixel autofocus. Vivo has also improved its camera algorithm and added an Astro mode on the Vivo X50 so that it can take clearer photos of the night sky. Despite being the high-end model, it only uses the new 50MP Samsung sensor with 4-axis OIS and not the new gimbal stabilization.

Other specs of the Vivo X50 Pro+ include a 6.56-inch OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support, a Snapdragon 865 chip, a 5x periscope camera offering 60x hybrid zoom, 5G connectivity, up to 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, and a 4315mAh battery with 44W fast charging. The other two Vivo X50 variants are geared for the mid-range market, though they also feature 5G.

Interestingly, the much-hyped gimbal system of the X50 series is only found on the X50 Pro. The device features a 48MP Sony IMX598 shooter and a gimbal system comprising of a dual ball suspension, voice coil motor, and other elements that allow it to offer up to 300% more stabilization than the current OIS solutions found on smartphones. The superior stabilization will help improve the low-light sensitivity on the Vivo X50 Pro+ by a noticeable margin.

The Vivo X50 Pro features a 6.56-inch OLED display with 90Hz refresh rate, a 4315mAh battery with 33W fast charging, and its 48MP primary camera also uses the gimbal system. The company also claims that this is the slimmest 5G phone ever with a thickness of just 7.49mm. As for the Vivo X50, it has the same specs as the 'Pro' sibling but misses out on the gimbal system and comes with a slightly smaller 4200mAh battery.

The Vivo X50 series will launch in China later this month and the company also intends to launch the smartphones in India soon.
