Images of the new Xbox Store for Windows surface online

Last week, some Xbox Insiders discovered that a new app, simply called Mercury, was showing up on their Xbox One consoles, though it didn't seem to be usable at the time. Apparently, Mercury is going to be a new design for the Xbox Store, featuring a more modern design and using a new architecture underneath.

Now, a Russian Twitter user going by the name Community has managed to install the Mercury app on a PC, and has shared images of what it looks like. The images show off a completely revamped interface for the Xbox Store on Windows 10, with Fluent Design elements similar to those found on the new Xbox app that debuted last year.

Additionally, Aggiornamenti Lumia has shared some more tidbits, indicating that the app is currently called Microsoft Store in the About section, but it can only find and install Xbox games.

Buying Xbox games on Windows 10 has never really been a great experience, and in November of 2018, Phil Spencer committed to changing that in the future. Last summer, Microsoft introduced the new Xbox app, which included social features and access to Xbox Game Pass, but also a new store, which makes the appearance of this new store a bit more interesting.

At the time, the previous Xbox app was renamed to Xbox Console Companion, but recently, Twitter user Jean Blanc noticed that the app is directing users to download the new Xbox app. Further, it also says that the Xbox app is replacing Xbox Console Companion.

This seems to suggest that the Xbox app will be focusing more on its social features in the future, with the store section being moved into its own app, the aforementioned Mercury. Currently, though, the Xbox Console Companion app still has a few features you can't find on the new Xbox app, so it's unclear if - or when - Microsoft plans to drop it altogether, or if some of these features will simply be lost.
