Bloody Chicago recorded 18 murders on May 31, making it the city’s deadliest day in 60 years.

The dubious milestone was reached on a day Chicago was roiled by another round of protests and looting following the Memorial Day death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis.

The 18 deaths tallied by the University of Chicago Crime Lab made May 31, 2020 the single-most violent day in six decades, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday. The Crime Lab numbers go back only to 1961.

On May 29 and May 30, there were seven murders. In a city with an international reputation for crime, the 25 murders on those three days made for the most violent weekend in Chicago’s modern history, according to the paper.

Chicago homicides increase 50 percent in 2020, 139 percent in July alone, data shows

Chicago saw a dramatic increase in homicides and shootings in the first seven months of 2020 and a particularly remarkable increase in July, reflecting a growing trend in the U.S. that raised questions about potential police reform in major cities.

Data released on Saturday showed that Chicago saw 440 homicides between January 2020 through the end of June, a 52 percent increase from the same time period last year (which saw 290 homicides). Shooting victims similarly increased by 51 percent (1,480 to 2,240) and shooting incidents themselves rose 47 percent (from 1,210 to 1,783).

Crime tends to increase during summers, but recent events have fueled unrest in the U.S. The troubling figures came as Chicago and other cities saw dramatic increases in violent crime amid protests surrounding George Floyd's death. Kansas City, for example, is expected to see "close to 700 people" shot by the end of the year, its police chief previously told Fox News.

There are several reasons, but two stick out...

1) like many PD's they're faced with politicised city leaders threatening defunding, so they back off.

2) as part of the CoVid-19 response many states have released hundreds or thousands of prisoners. Many of these prisoners are now back to their old ways; strengthening gangs, fighting for turf, and getting even.

2 is not only troubling for the stated reason but because prisons were infection hotspots, so in addition to releasing prisoners they released disease vectors.

Chicago's been out of control since the turn of the 20th century, causing street wars during Al Capone & Frank Nitti's time.  Currently there are 70+ active crime gangs. It's also corrupted the govt.; from 1976 to 2018 there's been 1,750 public corruption convictions.

They don't call it the most corrupt city in the US for nothing.

Not sure about Chicago, but here in the Milwaukee area, housing prices in the suburbs have been outrageous.  Everybody wants to be as far out of these crime ridden cities as possible, and every property gets a bidding war.  It's amazing that even during a pandemic, you can put an offer in at almost $50k over asking price, and somebody still outbids you.

At some point, the whole city system is going to implode.   There won't be enough people to pay the already high taxes, businesses will move away, and there will be nothing left except for crime and vacant buildings.

More and more businesses are leaving Portland as well since the leadership cannot get that city under control.

Chicago and the surrounding region has been emptying out for years, over 22,000 in 1017-2018 just for that area and 50,000+ for Illinois. One-party rule & related corruption (>1,700 public officials jailed including several governors), taxes, crime, etc. have 'em bailing out.

You thank their mayor, Lightfoot. I hear she's doing a great job for the socialists.

Yup. They're hamstringing their cops in general, and hadn't used swarming gang control units until late this summer (read: too little, too late). They've been trying to boil water without turning on the heat. At some point even progressive voters will tire of this crap, turning out the PC enablers.

Mayor has not helped the city at all.  I also have been seeing NYC crime rate going up a lot as well.  Just between may/august something like a 50 percent increase in crime vs the same period last year.
