Ahead of the release of the Galaxy S21 series later this week, Samsung Display has revealed (via SamMobile) that the display on the S21 Ultra uses a new low-power OLED display technology. The company is using a new organic material with improved luminous efficiency for the 6.8-inch QHD+ panel of the Galaxy S21 Ultra.
Samsung Display notes that the increase in luminous efficiency by the new organic material is achieved by having electrons flow faster and more easily through the display's organic layers. This allows the OLED panel to reach higher brightness levels more efficiently.
As per the display maker, this new low-power OLED display will reduce power consumption in smartphones by up to 16 percent. That's a relatively major reduction in power consumption which should help the Galaxy S21 Ultra last longer than the Note20 Ultra and even the Galaxy S20 Ultra from last year. Apart from being more power-efficient, the Galaxy S21 Ultra's 6.8-inch OLED display can reach brightness levels of up to 1,500 nits.
With the addition of 5G and other power-hungry features in smartphones, the reduction in power consumption of key components goes a long way in extending their battery life. For now, Samsung is only using this new OLED technology on the Galaxy S21 Ultra, with the regular S21 and S21+ using LTPO OLED panels.
