macOS 11.2.2 Big Sur is out with a fix for USB Type-C hubs

Today, Apple is releasing a minor update for macOS 11 Big Sur, bringing the version number to 11.2.2. As you'd expect based on the version number, it only includes fixes and improvements, rather than any actual new features. And in fact, it only has one real fix noted (via 9to5Mac).

Apparently, there was an issue with some third-party USB Type-C hubs that are considered to be non-compliant, and they could cause damage to a machine, so with this update, MacBook Pro PCs made in 2019 or later and MacBook Air PCs made in 2020 or later won't be damaged if you use these peripherals. Of course, Apple didn't say how it would keep your laptop from being damaged.

It's unclear how widespread of a problem this has been, or why it's limited to those particular Macs, as Apple has been using USB Type-C for a lot longer than that. Nevertheless, as usual, you can update your PC by going to About this Mac and clicking Software Update. As is the case with updates like this, it's recommended that you install it sooner rather than later.
