Xiaomi started working on its first under-display camera tech back in 2019 and last year, we had the third-generation design from the Chinese tech giant. The third-gen design is said to debut in a Mi phone sometime this year. However, it appears that Xiaomi isn't stopping as the company has patented an all-new design for its fourth-gen under-display camera and this time the camera would be able to rotate.
As discovered by LetsGoDigital, the patent says the new flip camera design will allow it to rotate so that it can function both as a selfie camera as well as a rear camera. A magnetic rotating module will be deployed with which such a mechanism can be carried out. In terms of benefits, the new design will certainly help save some space since separate cameras for the front and rear will not be needed.
Of course, these are very early days and it remains to be seen if this interesting concept ultimately materializes.
We finally had our first official smartphone launch with an under-display camera in the form of the ZTE Axon 20 5G in December last year. And although it's a decent first-time effort, most of the reviewers, including ourselves, agreed that it's still got plenty of teething issues that needed to be resolved.
In related news, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold3 featuring an under-display selfie camera is expected to launch next month. Even more exciting is the rumor that it will feature an AMD mobile GPU portion alongside its Exynos CPU. The Korean giant apparently also wants to bring under-display webcams to laptops.
