The AMD GPU inside Exynos reportedly outperforms latest Mali chips despite throttling

For a while now, we have known that AMD and Samsung are working on a custom Radeon GPU that will go inside upcoming Samsung Exynos chips. And recently at Computex, AMD confirmed that the new mobile Exynos GPU will in fact be based on the company's current RDNA 2 architecture.

Dubbed by the community as "mRNDA", a rumor that's surfaced today alleges that the chip is easily outperforming the latest Arm Mali GPUs that Samsung currently uses, despite heavily throttling. In fact, it goes further to state that the mRDNA chip is faster even than next-gen Mali offerings.

To expand, apparently, AMD is currently internally testing the Exynos RDNA2 chip and the GPU is said to have throttled after the first test itself leading to a performance loss of 20%. After the second test, the drop was even bigger as the mRDNA chip allegedly experienced a 30% loss in performance.

But as stated above, despite this, mRDNA is still faster and Samsung allegedly wants to further extend its contract for the next-gen mRDNA chips as well. The South Korean giant reportedly is impressed and has gained confidence in the Radeon graphics which is rumored to debut inside its Exynos 2200 chipset. It will also be interesting to see which process gets adopted for the AMD Exynos as that could play a key role in power consumption.

The report further adds that Google is purportedly signing up to be a new customer for mRDNA although no information related to this development exists at the moment.
