What should I do with this free PC?

  7. Agreed, Windows XP SP2 was the turning point in Windows security and when I finally upgraded to it from Windows 2000. The OP is not wrong as Vista was the first release that fully revamped things like networking but it was half baked overall and skipped by me and a lot of people along with the enterprise by large until Windows 7.

  9. Not a full OS release but basically as big as, XP SP2 was the real start of that. People don't remember what an absolute mess XP was in its first year, with broadband becoming prevalent there was a much bigger attack vector. Actually Vista was a full OS Release. Just about every part of Vista was repiped including the network stack due to security concerns that caused the XP SP2 update. Windows 7 was an optimized version of Vista, which Vista became quite good and stable by the last update to match 7 in a lot of areas. The problem is Microsoft got complacent again as many large companies do, and with Windows 10 they were back to making changes and adding features in some cases not even in complete phases. Windows 11 was a refocus on security, but not 100%. The latest incident is a combination of how developers ship out products much quicker, but in unfinished designs that they can patch up on day 0 or after. The other part is lazy IT. That is how that Azure server went unsecure. I am hoping Microsoft really looks at buggy unsecure software being a problem with a focus on security and security and even in some cases feature complete bugs being fixed and patched before launching to public. Also, better training and constant training with personnel to avoid those costly and reputational mistakes.

  11. Today
  12. "To comply with Microsoft's removal of the stock Windows 10 taskbar" Was it in fact removed? If so, how is SaB doing it? They got a working build going within a day or so, so it's hard to believe that it was removed and then exactly replicated in that amount of time. Something happened, since there was a disruption, but I've never seen a clear statement of exactly what.
  13. Blizzard won't hold its fan event BlizzCon in 2024 but it will return in the future by John Callaham Blizzard Entertainment is taking a break from running its popular in-person fan event BlizzCon. Today, the game developer announced that BlizzCon will not be held during 2024. In its blog post, Blizzard stated: This decision was not made lightly as BlizzCon remains a very special event for all of us, and we know many of you look forward to it. While we’re approaching this year differently and as we have explored different event formats in the past, rest assured that we are just as excited as ever to bring BlizzCon back in future years. Blizzard finally brought back BlizzCon as a live in-person event at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California in November 2023. It was the first in-person BlizzCon since 2019, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Blizzard did hold a virtual BlizzCon event in 2021. Today's announcement does state that Blizzard has plans to hold a series of in-person events around the world to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its Warcraft game franchise. It added: While these events are distinct from BlizzCon, we’re harnessing all of our creativity and imagination to ensure that they carry the same spirit of celebration and togetherness. Blizzard also has plans to celebrate the launches of two upcoming projects in 2024. One is the next World of Warcraft expansion pack, The War Within, and the other is the release of the first Diablo IV expansion pack Vessel of Hatred. The developer plans to hold events at a number of video game trade shows, including Gamescom in August. It will also make some announcements during a number of unnamed gaming streaming events. Blizzard is now owned by Microsoft, and in January a number of team members were laid off as part of Microsoft's 1,900 job cuts in its gaming division. It also canceled the development of its unnamed survival game that was first announced in 2022. However, Blizzard is hiring for a number of top positions for an unannounced game.
  14. Cities: Skylines II update delivers DLSS, Beach Properties DLC content for free, and more by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Last week, Colossal Order and Paradox announced a major shift in Cities: Skylines II's development focus going forward. This meant delaying upcoming DLC packs and putting the development team completely on game optimization and bug fixes. It also meant that the game's first premium DLC pack, Beach Properties, was going free for all players, with refunds also being sent out. Today, that Beach Properties patch has finally landed, and it has also brought other goodies like DLSS and bug fixes too. "This patch removes the entitlement from all the Beach Properties assets, so they are now a part of the base game and available to everyone," says Colossal Order. "Saves and custom maps using the assets should work without any extra steps." Head here to find more details on the refunding procedure for those who had purchased the widely panned DLC. A surprise addition of this update is Nvidia DLSS 2 upscaling technology. The city builder launching with the original 1.0 version of AMD FSR, and no other upscaling option. 16. Apple is not allowing Spotify's latest iOS update in the EU that showed discounted pricing by Karthik Mudaliar Apple has blocked Spotify's latest update in the European Union, which aimed to include subscription pricing tiers and options to pay without using in-app purchases. Spotify claims that Apple has not acknowledged or responded to its submission, which is a violation of Apple's statement that they turn around reviews on app submissions within 24 hours. This rejection by Apple is due to Spotify's refusal to request an entitlement and pay Apple a commission for purchases made from external links. The EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), however, requires Apple to allow music streaming apps to include external purchase links, but Apple's updated rules still involve taking a commission from these purchases. The ruling also allows Spotify to distribute a Spotify app to EU users outside of the App Store, but it would be required to pay Apple's Core Technology Fee for each user. "Apple continues to break European law,” and unfortunately that means we still can’t give EU consumers the information they need and the choices they deserve in our app. Here’s what we mean. pic.twitter.com/tkcXQkRqLy — Spotify News (@SpotifyNews) April 24, 2024 Spotify, along with other companies like Epic Games, has criticized Apple's compliance with the DMA, calling it extortion and a farce. The feud between Apple and Spotify is not new, with tensions dating back to a 2019 antitrust complaint by Spotify over Apple's 30% "Apple Tax." The conflict escalated in 2024 when the European Commission fined Apple $2 billion for preventing Swedish streaming service Spotify from advertising cheaper subscription deals outside the iOS platform. The ruling followed a four-year investigation and found that Apple had "abused its dominant position in the market" by preventing developers from informing customers about alternative services. In response to the ruling, Apple has introduced the Music Streaming Services Entitlement for music streaming apps in the European Economic Area (EEA), allowing developers to include a link to their website for alternative purchasing options. However, Apple still requires developers to use its In-App Purchase system and pay a commission for purchases made from external links.

  18. Intel and AMD probably freaking out at this point. The performance is looking good, now we just need to see how the battery life goes.
  19. Shutting down is not that big a problem. Just pull the power cord. After all it's only a windows machine and not used for anything significant. (at least in my setup). I've used start10 before to have a better start menu in my Windows 10, so I would probably go with start11 as well. It won't be for a while though. My hardware does not support windows 11, so I'm safe for now.
  20. The thing everyone needs to understand about this wave of forced arbitration that is washing through US tech companies is that: 1) if you are not in the US, the lawyers are going to be starting to try to find the same loopholes in non-US law to apply the same nonsense, so the consumer needs to push back. 2) if you find yourself thinking "well I don't really see the need to care here". Understand that it is the tech company who appoints the arbitrator, they're not an impartial third party. They are literally on the payroll of the tech company. You just need to look at how well Boeing doing its own FAA inspections has worked out for the consumer and travel sector in recent months to realise that this isn't a good thing. If one of your kids, brothers, sisters, nieces or nephews is using the services of one of these tech companies and they wind up abused, hurt, damaged because of abuse suffered on their platforms. You can't seek compensation, in fact you can't do anything. The arbitration will never side against its paymaster in any significant way. If you get a company pushing these terms on you - push back. This is scum lawyers manipulating legislative loopholes to give companies with poor social reputations a blank cheque to at best do nothing and at worst do even more harm in the interest of profit. We should all send a clear message about this sort of thing IMHO.
