    Will this system run Windows?

I've had quite a few mini PCs like that. Will run Windows 10/11 very well.
  4. It's a lot of fun although still a lot of bugs even this far down the line, I played it through on Xbox about 2 months ago, I believe the PC version is in a far worse state!
  5. Samsung begins mass-producing its 9th generation V-NAND memory chips by Taras Buria Samsung is now mass-producing its 9th-generation triple-level cell (TLC) vertical NAND memory chips for high-performance and high-density solid-state drives. The new chips boast a smaller size and a 50% density improvement over the previous generation NAND memory. Besides its smaller size, Samsung's new V-NAND memory packs several new technologies. In the official blog post, Samsung says it uses cell interference avoidance and cell life extension to make memory last longer and work more reliably. Also, the company uses "channel hole etching to maximize fabrication productivity: Samsung’s advanced “channel hole etching” technology showcases the company’s leadership in process capabilities. This technology creates electron pathways by stacking mold layers and maximizes fabrication productivity as it enables simultaneous drilling of the industry’s highest cell layer count in a double-stack structure. As the number of cell layers increase, the ability to pierce through higher cell numbers becomes essential, demanding more sophisticated etching techniques. Samsung's 9th-generation vertical NAND uses the new "Toggle 5.1" NAND flash interface, which improves data input/out speeds by 33% up to 3.2Gbps. Samsung says it plans to use new memory chips and the interface for high-performance PCIe 5.0 SSDs. As of right now, the budget-friendly 990 EVO is the only PCIe 5.0 solid-state drive from Samsung. Finally, technological improvements in the new V-NAND memory from Samsung allowed the company to decrease power consumption by 10%. Samsung is already producing triple-level cell V-NAND memory, and the production of quad-level cell V-NAND will begin in the second half of 2024. We are excited to deliver the industry’s first 9th-gen V-NAND which will bring future applications leaps forward. In order to address the evolving needs for NAND flash solutions, Samsung has pushed the boundaries in cell architecture and operational scheme for our next-generation product. Through our latest V-NAND, Samsung will continue to set the trend for the high-performance, high-density solid-state drive (SSD) market that meets the needs for the coming AI generation. You can read more about the 9th-generation V-NAND from Samsung in a post on the Samsung Newsroom website.
  6. ? Those services don't run anything on your PC. What a surprise they don't require anything from your PC... Windows 11 not supporting the scenario of having your GPU act as an "NPU" is a more valid complaint.
  7. I dropped my WD external drive while moving. It fell about three feet and hit the cement sidewalk. I thought I had lost all my data, but after i set up my computer, in the new place, and plugged it in, Behold! Everything was there and the drive has now been in continuous service for over 10 years. Amazing!

  9. Microsoft unveils Phi-3, its smallest AI model to run on smartphones by Omer Dursun Microsoft has introduced the next iteration of its lightweight artificial intelligence (AI) model, called Phi-3. The updated family includes the 3.8-billion-parameter Phi-3 Mini, the 7-billion-parameter Phi-3 Small, and the 14-billion-parameter Phi-3 Medium. This release comes after the Phi-2 model, introduced in December 2023, was surpassed in performance by models such as Meta's Llama-3 family. In the face of increased competition, Microsoft Research has applied newer techniques to its curriculum learning approach. The new 3.8 billion parameter model improves on the previous Phi-2 model while using significantly fewer resources than larger language models. At just 3.8 billion parameters, Phi-3 Mini outperforms both Meta's 8 billion parameter Llama and OpenAI's 3.5 billion parameter GPT-3, according to Microsoft's own benchmarks. We introduce phi-3-mini, a 3.8 billion parameter language model trained on 3.3 trillion tokens, whose overall performance, as measured by both academic benchmarks and internal testing, rivals that of models such as Mixtral 8x7B and GPT-3.5 (e.g., phi-3-mini achieves 69% on MMLU and 8.38 on MT-bench), despite being small enough to be deployed on a phone. We also provide some initial parameter-scaling results with a 7B and 14B models trained for 4.8T tokens, called phi-3-small and phi-3-medium, both significantly more capable than phi-3-mini (e.g., respectively 75% and 78% on MMLU, and 8.7 and 8.9 on MT-bench). Due to its smaller size, the Phi-3 family is optimized for low-power devices compared to larger models. Microsoft Vice President Eric Boyd said (via The Verge) that the new model is capable of advanced natural language processing directly on a smartphone. This makes Phi-3 Mini well-suited for novel applications that require AI assistance anywhere. While Phi-3 Mini outperforms competitors in its weight class, it cannot match the breadth of knowledge of massive models trained on the Internet. However, Boyd notes that smaller, high-quality models tend to perform better because internal datasets are often more limited in scale.

  13. iPhone 16 might abandon mechanical buttons but don't bet your bottom dollar on it by Martin Hodás For years, capacitive buttons were present in smartphones after pushing the physical buttons away from the front panels, long before they were themselves essentially eradicated by edge-to-edge screens, even in lower-tier phones. Now, it seems the buttons on the sides of the smartphones are next. For a long time, the iPhone 15 was rumored to completely ditch mechanical buttons and go full-capacitive instead. However, this was not the case in the end, allegedly due to “unresolved technical issues.” That doesn’t mean that Apple completely gave up on the idea, though. A new supply chain report from the Chinese publication Economic Daily News claims, as spotted by AppleInsider, that the switch might happen as soon as this year with the expected arrival of the iPhone 16 family of smartphones. Economic Daily News reported that Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) secured a huge contract to supply Apple with a system-in-a-package (SIP) module for capacitive side buttons. This capacitive solution—one module per side—would be supported by two separate Taptic Engine motors to provide haptic feedback. The upcoming iPhone 16 was rumored to abandon physical buttons shortly after the launch of the current iPhone 15 family, although we haven’t heard about the plans any further this year. ASE is expecting hundreds of millions of shipments due to anticipated demand for the new generation of iPhones. However, that’s where the report starts to get less trustworthy. These shipments should reportedly ramp up in volumes in the third quarter of 2024, which sounds quite late for the integration and on-time shipments of the iPhone 16. As AppleInsider pointed out, Economic Daily News is a reliable source of information about Chinese suppliers. However, their predictions for U.S. customer companies are less accurate. Therefore, it is entirely possible that all the iPhone 16’s buttons—including the rumored Capture Button—will stay mechanical. That being said, the chances of future iPhones actually ditching mechanical buttons are now much higher.
  14. Sounds like you've tried all the obvious steps, if you've not updated in a while one of the updates last year was a TPM firmware update hence the warning about not being able to roll back. About the only thing I can think to suggest is to make sure the BIOS is reset to factory settings before flashing the new BIOS - backup your settings first if you've changed a lot just in case!

  16. Microsoft's private preview of Content Integrity tools expands to fight election deepfakes by John Callaham The 2024 US presidential campaign is not the only major election that's happening in the world this year. Indeed, the European Union will hold its own parliamentary elections in 2024, and a number of major European countries will hold either national or major regional elections this year as well. Microsoft has been warning that voters in the 2024 elections could be influenced by hostile nations and their state-sponsored hacker groups with the use of AI-generated "deepfake" images. In November 2023, the company announced it would launch its Content Integrity tools for US political campaigns in a private preview. Those parties would be able to use the tools to watermark authentic election content digitally. Microsoft said at the time that a private preview of those tools would launch in the spring of 2024. This week, Microsoft announced in a blog post that it will now expand the private preview of its Content Integrity tools so they could also be used by European Union political parties, along with election campaigns around the world. It will also be made available to news organizations worldwide. The tools use private websites and mobile apps so that political parties, election campaigns, and media groups can upload their authentic images, audio, and videos and place the Content Credentials digital watermark and data in that content. There's also a public website so that anyone can find out if any election-based content they see has the Content Credentials watermark. The blog post added: While we recognize that Content Credentials alone are not a panacea to solve the problem of deepfakes, they are a critical component of a defense strategy for trusted media. Protecting access to indicators of authenticity is just one key step as we deliver on our commitments to help protect elections around the world. There's no word on when these new election tools will come out of their public preview stage.

  21. Alleged Google Pixel 8a real-life images leaked, this time showing the device in blue, green by Sagar Naresh The Google Pixel 8a is the upcoming mid-range smartphone that has been touted to launch at the Google I/O event on May 14. Recently, the pricing of the Google Pixel 8a in Canada was leaked, suggesting a price increase. Now, after being spotted in real life earlier, the Pixel 8a has once again leaked in new real-life images, this time in blue and green colors. The Google Pixel 8a is speculated to launch in four colors, Obsidian, Mint, Porcelain, and Bay. The latest leak shared by an X user, Mohamma11824513 (via DroidReader), allegedly shows off the real-life images of the Google Pixel 8a in its Bay and Mint colors. Another leakster, @MysteryLupin, has shared a different video showing the Google Pixel 8a's box contents and the listing price in Moroccan Dirhams. The box contents from the video show a USB type-C to type-C cable and a USB-A to USB-C converter. The box did not contain a charging brick, and the Moroccan price converts roughly to $470, which could mean the price bump is less as compared to what was rumored about the Pixel 8a earlier. Both colors look vibrant on the Google Pixel 8a, the blue, especially, stands out. The green color seems a bit muted and isn't close to what was shown in previous leaks. But the mint color of the alleged Pixel 8a shown in the latest leak looks decent when compared to the green colors of the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro launched last year. While the device's hardware matches what we have heard till now about the Google Pixel 8a, thanks to all the leaks and rumors, we would still suggest you take any piece of unofficial information with a grain of salt. The Google Pixel 8a is expected to come with a Tensor G3 chipset coupled with 8GB of RAM. The device will reportedly be offered in 128GB and 256GB of onboard storage options. The Pixel 8a is rumored to come with a 6.1-inch 120Hz OLED display sporting a peak brightness of 1,400 nits.
