Salgoth Posted February 16, 2006 Share Posted February 16, 2006 (edited) Whenever someone posts a problem with Firefox the same questions always seem to arise when folks try to help troubleshoot the problem. :) So here?s a little guide to maybe save folks some time and get answers quicker. If you are having a problem with Firefox, regardless of the version, please do the following before you post for assistance. 1. If your problem involves settings, controls, or preferences which will not save when you close the browser: Delete the fillocalstore.rdfb> in C:\Documents and Settings\<Your User Nameb>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles. Restart FF. 2. If you still are having problems then change to the default theme and disable all your extensions and see if that fixes the problem:yes:s: The easiest way to do this is to close Firefox and restart in Safe Mode. Enter Safe Mode via the Start Menu shortcut or from the Run dialog usinfirefox.exe -safe-modei> 3. If the problem goes away when you disable extensions, then re-enable them one at a time and restart Firefox at least twice, or your whole computer once, between each extension install until you identify the culprit. Then notify the author of the extension via Mozilla.org. 4. If the problem persists, then generate a new profile with no extensions or themes and attempt to recreate the behavior under the new profile. To do this, first close Firefox. a. Now navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\<Your User Nameb>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\and identify your profile folder. b. Minimize the Explorer window. c. Next typ[firefox.exe -profilemanageri>[/b]b> in the RUN box. d. Select ?Create new profile?. e. Name your new profile and take note of the actual, rather goofy, name that Firefox created for your profile folder. Its shown in the small text below the dialog box. f. Hit the ?Start Firefox? button. 5. Once the new profile opens up see if your problem still occurs. 6. If a new profile fixed your problem, then reopen the Explorer window and simply copy the following from your old profile folder into your new profile folder and overwrite what is already there: Bookmarkbackups folder cookies.txt signons.txt key3.db 7. If a new profile failed to solve your problem then open up Neowin and go to the forums and locate the ?Search? button and use it to see if your problem has already been dealt with before. A search is a terrible thi:whistle:te. :whistle: 8. If all the above fail and you still need to post for assistance, make sure you can recreate the problem consistently so we can try and duplicate it ourselves to help you. 9. Copy the URL or link if a specific site is involved and include it in your post. 10. List what version of Firefox you are using, list which extensions and the version numbers you are using, and list which plug-ins you have installed. 11. List any software installs or uninstalls you have done recently, notably anything having to do with the internet. If you do all these things you?ll either solve the problem yourself or at least make it much easier for somebody here to assist you. Edited accordingly based on your suggestion. I've never had to nuke a profile yet (crosses fingers), but I've definately seen enough posts where that was the only thing that helped.
