Arum ready to stage De La Hoya vs. Pacquiao!

What was once thought to be a video game fantasy now has the potentials of becoming a reality.

Hall-of-Fame promoter Bob Arum disclosed in a Philippine radio interview Friday morning that initial talks have begun to stage an Oscar De La Hoya vs. Manny Pacquiao before the end of the year.

Arum was the main guest of the daily morning radio show ?Sports Chat? aired over DZSR 918kHz hosted by this writer where the astute promoter openly talked about the intriguing match-up.

Arum revealed he had discussions with Golden Boy Promotions people and that De La Hoya is looking at four names to choose from for his farewell fight and these are Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Felix Tito Trinidad, Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao.

Arum said Mayweather, Jr., because of his recent retirement and Trinidad, because of his huge weight, are so far out of the picture.

?That leaves two fighters for Oscar to fight on December 6, Miguel Cotto who is fighting next week against Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao,? said Arum ?Let?s be very practical about it. At this particular point, Oscar De La Hoya has one more fight left in his illustrious career and that?s December the 6th.

Arum said he will discuss everything with Pacquiao as soon as the Filipino four-division world champion arrives in Las Vegas next weekend to watch the Cotto-Margarito fight.

?The decision that has to be made by Manny Pacquiao is, number one, if Oscar decides he would like to fight, whether Manny feels that is a winnable fight because Oscar is bigger and secondly whether the financial remunerations are appropriate,? said Arum.

?Until I sit with Manny and find out Manny?s financial demands and find out what percentage the revenue we can get from a De La Hoya-Pacquiao fight everything is really premature. The point is that we are not discarding our other options as this whole process goes on.?

Arum agrees with Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach that the fight must be done in the welterweight limit of 147. The well-known promoter added that the weight will not be an issue for De La Hoya, his one-time prized fighter.

?I don?t think that would be a problem, as far as Oscar coming down to 147. That is based on my preliminary discussions, that won?t be a problem. In other words if he fought Cotto, if he fought Pacquiao we would do it at welterweight,? added Arum.

Arum at the same time dismissed reports of bitterness between him and De La Hoya in the same show which also included broadcaster Ronnie Nathanielsz as guest co-host.

?That is not true, Oscar is a businessman there is no truth to as far as making the fight or not making the fight. If it makes sense in making the fight, if it can be done on good economic terms that won?t stop Oscar at all. Trust me,? said Arum ?When the contracts are drawn up for the fight, if you are a professional you lose that animosity and maximize the revenue with the promotions.?

Thursday morning in the same show Roach revealed his eagerness of seeing h?When I trained Oscar he was just having trouble pulling the trigger and he?s a little bit slow. If Stevie Forbes can hit him as easily as he did, I know Pacquiao will knock him out,? said Roach. Pacquiao will knock him out,? said Roach.

Roach said he?s been asking around and learned that De La Hoya can fight at 147-lbs if a real worthy opponent is available at that weight.

?I want Manny to weigh-in 140 pounds and then at fight time he?ll be at 145 he?ll have his power and speed. I just don?t see Oscar handling Manny at this point of their careers,? revealed Roach ?Manny told me he?d love to fight Oscar and Oscar has made it public he?d love to fight Manny and I think it?s a big, big fight.?

Pacquiao, who will turn 30 this December, crowned himself four-division champion when he stopped Mexican-American David Diaz inside eight rounds last month to capture the World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight crown. In that fight Roach stated his delight in seeing his prized ward use his right hand in spectacular fashion.

?That performance is really what sets me to make that decision (to challenge De La Hoya). Because I?ve been working on Manny?s right hand for a long time. Sometimes it was there a little bit, against (Juan Manuel) Marquez it wasn?t there too much,? added Roach.

Pacman a dangerous Golden Boy foe!

No less than Golden Boy Promotions vice president for matchmaking Eric Gomez believes Manny Pacquiao presents a tough challenge for Oscar De La Hoya.

In an interview with the daily Philippine radio show ?Sports Chat?, Gomez said they?ve been telling De La Hoya that Pacquiao has the tools to hurt the six-time world champion.

?We?re talking to him and telling him it?s a dangerous fight. Manny can really hurt you and why do you want to do that. In fact, I myself, personal, as a matchmaker, I feel that a Miguel Cotto fight is easier. I feel Miguel Cotto?s style suits Oscar better,? Gomez told this writer who hosts the show aired over DZSR Sports Radio.

Cotto, the undefeated welterweight fighter from Puerto Rico will defend his welterweight crown against Mexican Antonio Margarito this weekend in Las Vegas.

?Manny jumps around like a buzzsaw. He comes in, jumps around with different angles, I just don?t know if Oscar can have a guy coming like that at a 100 miles per hour,? said Gomez ? Miguel Cotto?s coming in from the front door. You can wait from there and catch him. But Manny Pacquiao?s the type of fighter that comes in from the front door, side door, back door, and that?s what makes him so great. The guy is so unpredictable, very strong.?

The buzz about a De La Hoya-Pacquiao bout started when Freddie Roach revealed through the same radio show last week his eagerness in seeing his prized fighter battle De La Hoya straight on this December.

The following day, it was hall-of-fame promoter Bob Arum?s turn to grace the show and confirmed there are talks ongoing about making the fight.

The proposed December 6th super-fight between Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao has taken a significant step forward.

The size of the purse is now the only stumbling block for the non-title welterweight bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to go ahead.

This news comes after negotiations began at the start of August between Richard Schaefer, chief executive of De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, and Bob Arum, president of Top Rank Boxing, which represents Pacquiao.

Arum pushed for the fight to be held at 147 pounds and with eight-ounce gloves, which De La Hoya has agreed to.

Schaefer spoke to De La Hoya several times over the weekend and then relayed the boxer's final terms to Arum on Wednesday morning.

"Now, it's up to Pacquiao if he wants to do it or not," Schaefer told the Los Angeles Times.

Schaefer confirmed they have not yet agreed on the share of the purse, the size of which he would not disclose, nor the percentage Pacquiao was seeking.

Biggest payday

But he said it would easily be the biggest payday of Pacquiao's career.

"We gave in a bit on the last round of negotiations. This time around, we're not willing to make any further concessions," said Schaefer, who added he expected to have an answer before this weekend.

The agreement on the weight and size of the gloves for the bout comes as the Nevada Athletic Commission requires any fight at 147 or higher to be contested with 10-ounce gloves, unless the boxers agree on a different size.

Six-weight world champion De La Hoya last fought in March at 150 pounds, while four-weight world champion Pacquiao defeated David Diaz in June at 135 pounds.

Manny Pacquiao has decided to stay at lightweight and defend his WBC 135-lb crown after turning down an offer by Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) for a Dec. 6 fight in Las Vegas, lawyer Franklin Gacal said in a statement released early Thursday morning. "I have been informed that Oscar De La Hoya is firm with the 70-30 revenue sharing and won't budge in to the 60-40 split we have counter-offered. I find the offer of GBP unconscionable hence unacceptable. It would have been an honor to fight De La Hoya on his last fight capping a very illustrious boxing career but under the circumstances, the option left is to move on. I have already made specific instructions to my lawyer to start negotiating with Bob Arum for my next fight with any possible opponent at 135 lbs," said Pacquiao. Gacal said what Pacquiao wanted was a fair share of the mega fight and apparently, Oscar De La Hoya is making an offer that he knows is unacceptable," Gacal told fightnews.com.It is certain that Pacquiao will face Humberto Soto of Mexico sometime in November in Las Vegas.

Probably a good thing. I was believing this to be another side show instead of a real fight. The split was unfair tbh. A 60-40 would have been perfectly fine. If you loved boxing DLH and claimed to take care of boxers with your promotional company, you should show it.

Both fighters can no longer back out of their intriguing match-up which, if it doesn?t happen, will surely earn the ire of boxing fans. Though Pacquiao acknowledges De La Hoya?s status by agreeing to take less from the money pie, the Filipino sensation still wants a 60-40 split. De La Hoya is firm with his 70-30 offer. A source recently told Fightnews Team De La Hoya has agreed to raise Pacman?s take home pay to 33%.

Oscar De La Hoya, boxing's biggest star, will announce Thursday that he will meet pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao on Dec. 6, two sources close to the fight told ESPN.com.

Top Rank's Bob Arum, whose company promotes Pacquiao, would not confirm a deal was in place for what would be the year's biggest fight, but he did tell ESPN.com that De La Hoya would host a media teleconference at 2 p.m. ET on Thursday to announce his opponent.

"We'll know who is he is fighting tomorrow," Arum said Wednesday from Youngstown, Ohio, where he was attending a promotional event for the Kelly Pavlik-Bernard Hopkins fight that he is co-promoting with De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions. "I made a commitment that I wouldn't say anything and that tomorrow there would be an announcement. I'm not allowed to make any comments. Everything will be clear on Thursday."

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer would not confirm the deal, either, but sounded positive when asked about it.

"Last week the deal was 90 percent dead, but we were able to revive it. The fact that it has been so quiet is a good sign," Schaefer said from Mexico, where he was traveling on business with De La Hoya. "It's been a lot of back and forth and skillful negotiating and to try to get each side to soften their stance. If the fight was Arum versus Schaefer, it would have been made awhile ago."

Schaefer dismissed reports this week that welterweight titleholder Paul Williams was under serious consideration to meet De La Hoya. Schaefer said that although Williams' name was thrown out during an internal meeting, it was quickly dismissed, and no contact was ever made between the De La Hoya and Williams camps. Williams promoter Dan Goossen confirmed that as well.

De La Hoya (39-5, 30 KOs), who has repeatedly said the December fight would be the last bout of his storied career in which he's won world titles in six weight divisions, has been in talks with Pacquiao (47-3-2, 35 KOs) for weeks. But negotiations got bogged down when the sides could not come to an agreement on how to split the revenue, which is expected to exceed more than $100 million.

De La Hoya stood firm for weeks on a 70-30 split in his favor; Pacquiao was demanding a 40 percent slice of the pie.

The rest of the major issues, from the maximum weight to the size of the gloves, were agreed upon, with Pacquiao getting his way on a 147-pound weight limit and 8-ounce gloves.

The percentage split that De La Hoya and Pacquiao have apparently agreed to is unclear.

Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's trainer and one of De La Hoya's former trainers, has been an outspoken advocate of the fight, going so far as to say he would train Pacquiao for free because he was so confident he would win.

Roach told ESPN.com on Wednesday that Pacquiao, whom he hadn't spoken to much recently, left him two voice mails at about 7 a.m. ET.

"He left me the messages and at the end of one of them, he said, 'Thanks for all your help.' I read that as the fight is done," Roach said.

Pacquiao, a lightweight titleholder who has won belts in five weight classes and is a national icon in the Philippines, would move up to welterweight for the showdown with De La Hoya.

The fight is expected to take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where De La Hoya has fought five of his past six bouts and seven of his past 10.

The Golden Boy continues to have the golden touch.

Oscar De La Hoya's welterweight showdown with pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao on Dec. 6 sold out almost instantly after tickets went on sale Wednesday.

Organizers announced that all of the approximately 16,000 tickets to "The Dream Match" at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas (HBO PPV) sold out for a gate of almost $17 million.

The total makes De La Hoya-Pacquiao the second-biggest gate in boxing history, surpassed only by the $18,419,200 worth of tickets sold for De La Hoya's fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 5, 2007.

The total surpasses the $16,860,300 generated by the 1999 heavyweight championship rematch in Las Vegas between Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield, promoters said.

It means De La Hoya will be a part of four of the top 10 gates in Nevada history; his bouts with Felix Trinidad and Bernard Hopkins are also in the top 10.

"This is just a reflection of the overwhelming interest in this mega-event and we are extremely delighted that tickets sales were so swift," Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said. "The matchup is one of the best in boxing and will be one of the biggest events the sport has ever seen."

Bob Arum, whose Top Rank promotes Pacquiao, said, "This is fantastic and shows the magnitude and appeal of this event. When you have two superstars like Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya fighting each other, the public is going to respond, and that is what they just did. No one wants to miss this one."

In addition to the arena, Arum said, there would be approximately 33,000 closed-circuit tickets available in Las Vegas priced at $60 and $100.

"It's a hot, hot fight. People will be screaming for tickets," Arum said. "How many fights that people go crazy about do $17 million, all in? But this fight is at $17 million and that does not even include the revenue that will be generated from the closed circuit, the pay-per-view, the foreign [television] sales and the sponsorships."

With Golden Boy, Top Rank and the MGM taking large chunks of tickets before the public sale, only a few thousand tickets were available.

The fighters will commence a six-city national media tour beginning Oct. 1 at the Statue of Liberty in New York. Other cities on the schedule are Chicago, Houston, San Antonio, San Francisco and Los Angeles, with most of the events open and free to the public.

I am rooting for Pacquiao, not just because I am filipino but because he's an exciting fighter, I like his style, yes I know its not the SWEET SCIENCE but its exciting and entertains and most importantly he wins.

This is going to be a great fight and I don't think De La Hoya is going to win this one with a knockdown, if he wins at all. I'm not saying Pacquiao is going to win but all I have to say is that its going to be good! Real good!

I just hope Pacquiao doesn't lose that speed and power going up weight, he's smart and he knows how to use his weapons when he's in the ring.

LAS VEGAS--Oscar De la Hoya has remained the favorite over Manny Pacquiao, according to the MGM Sportsbook when visited by this writer yesterday.

De la Hoya is pegged as minus 185 favorite to frustrate Pacquiao, while the fire-breathing Filipino fighter is at plus 155 to defeat the Golden Boy of boxing.

Meaning, a $185 exposure on De la Hoya would net only $100, while a $100 bet on Pacquiao rakes in $155 if the Pacman wins the fight.

The odds, however, are expected to somehow level off a few days before the fight, although De la Hoya is expected to be the favorite up until fight time.

Pacquiao had been previously quoted as saying he would rather be branded as an underdog, as this only motivates him to beat De la Hoya.

Several instances in the past, Pacquiao had been a prohibitive underdog, especially in the fight with Lehlo Ledwaba, as well as the first Eric Morales match and the first Barrera showdown.

Meanwhile, four-time world champion Pacquiao gave away 500 turkeys to his many loyal fans at the Lake Street Park in Historic Filipino Town in Los Angeles yesterday. Pacquiao, according to a press release, wished Happy Thanksgiving to all of his fans and said the turkeys were his gift to them for their support.

Pacquiao is in training for his upcoming world welterweight rumble 'Dream Match' against the 'Golden Boy' Oscar De La Hoya, East Los Angeles on Saturday,December 6 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas,Nevada. But, Floyd Mayweather Sr. is trying to push Hatton to fight Pacquiao, I think he see's that as a better fight.

In all honesty, there's a long way to go and Hatton isn't really in any of their minds hopefully cause they need to focus on the fight.

I'm not so sure Paq will be too much for Oscar like Hopkins was or even Mayweather was. We still need to remember Paq is coming up from a really small weight class. He started out fighting pro as low as 107 pounds. Mayweather started around 130 pounds. Paq will need to carry his speed and power to the 147 pound limit. He has a better chance at out boxing DLH then staying in front of him. DLH has problems with slick boxers, Whitaker, Mayweather, Mosley, and Hopkins though I believe the size and power of Hopkins played a larger role. Manny, however, likes to take it to you and stay in front. Big mistake.

I'm not trying to sound like a cheerleader for DLH even though I like the guy just as much as I like Paq (I live in Hawaii and half my family is Filipinos) but now I'm forced to actually play what-ifs in my head. DLH back to training at Big Bear and been walking around comfortably at 145 for a little while now. Welterweight is probably his best weight for his fighting or bang for the buck. Not to mention he has knocked out opponents at 154. I just see him too strong for Manny in this one. Like they say, its a Dream Match but if you look at it on paper, it could be a slaughter.

I could be wrong but seriously, let the better man win. I'll be happy either way lets just hope everyone is safe at the end of the night. :)

I am filipino and I have a lot of confidence in Pacquiao. Great fighter and also De La Hoya hasn't fought a South-Paw in 7 years? 2001 was the last time I believe. I don't believe he has also fought someone of great heart, magnitude, excitement, speed, and determination as Manny "PACMAN" Pacquiao.

This is going to be a great fight and I will definitely have my eyes glued and my fists pumping during this fight, gonna be awesome!

Also, Pacquiao in the weigh in looked like he was in great shape.

During the weigh in he weighed 142 lbs.

After the weigh in, he checked again and he weighed 145.5 lbs.

Either Oscar De La Hoya was overweight and didn't want to end the weight at the weigh ins or since everyone else was weighed before, there was a problem with the scale.

I am going for the latter, since I did not want the fight ending at the scales.

I'm of difference with this one though. I think the styles of Hatton vs Paq would be a much better show. I think DLH would beat Hatton easily, like what he did to Gatti.

Where did you get the weigh-in info? I'm hesitant to believe that just by looking at the pictures of DLH and Paq. You can clearly see less muscle on DLH than when he weighed for his 154 bouts. He looks like DLH of old with the large shoulders and skinny everything else.
