The SP2 Thread - Reloaded

On this thread you will be able to find links to every neowin.net article related to Windows XP SP2. Where it is appropriate, links to other sites will be supplied as well as official and unofficial information about SP2's content, release, download availability and general rumors.

What is a Service Pack

"Microsoft continually works to improve its software. As part of this effort, we develop updates and fixes to recognized issues and release them for use by customers. On a regular basis (Hmm, Really - Leebobs),we combine many of these fixes into a single package and make the package available for customers to install on their computers. These packages are called Service Packs." - Quoting Microsofts SP1 Homepage

The main areas addressed by a Service Pack are:

  • Compatibility with newly released software and drivers
  • Security, including the latest updates for Windows XP security issues
  • Operating system reliability

SP2's Basic Details

  • Will contain all current publically available (Windows upadate) patches and a load of other (not publicly available) updates.
  • Changes to Functionality in Windows XP Service Pack 2 - Microsoft Document
  • Will Contain Wi-Fi Client Side Updates (server side patches will be included in Windows Server SP1).
  • Changes to DCOM and the RPC interface will mean a greater restriction on buffer overruns.
  • Will disable messenger service by default (Not to be confused with Windows Messenger).
  • Will contain a new version of the Internet Connection Firewall (Now Called Windows Firewall), which will be enabled by default. This new version will be able to control outgoing data to the internet and not only incoming.
  • A New Version of Internet Explorer will be included (6.05?). It will be locked down in a manner similar to, but not as restrictive as, the IE version in Windows Server 2003; IE6.05 includes new download security warnings, pop up add blocking and all the cumulative updates since SP1.
  • SP2 will update Windows Media Player on all installations to Version 9.
  • SP2 will update DirectX on all installations to version 9c.
  • SP2 will Contain Windows MSI Installer version 3.0
  • Windows XP SP2 includes support for Execution Protection (NX) hardware execution environment. (Supported on Athlon64's and Future Intel P4's)
  • SP2 will enable the automatic download and installation of critical security hot-fixes, without user interaction.
  • Will move the 'Set Program Access Defaults' Option to the start menu.
  • SP2 BETA1 does Contain Concurrent Sessions, but its disabled - Cracked By Neowin
  • SP2 RC1 (Build 2096) Contains Windows Media Player 9 Build 3133, Windows Security Center and DirectX9b
  • SP2 RC2 (Build 2149) Contains Windows Media Player 9 Build 3196, Windows Security Center and DirectX9c

So what will SP2 Contain?? When will it be released?? When does BETA testing begin?? Well keep checking back for updates to the SP2 story here at Neowin :D

hey dudes... i know SP1a doesn't have java but did they remove it from these latest builds that are being leaked ? (SP2 i'm talking about) I know it shouldn't be there but they started working on this before all that

Voodoo: Neowin is simply the greatest, I am proud to be part of a unique online community where enthusiasts from around the world come together to share knowledge, provide help and produce some top class debates and articles.

ALL: It doesn't look like another leak of SP2 will emerge until Microsoft successfully incorporate Concurrent sessions into a build. When that will be?. Only Bill Gates knows.

Keep checking www.neowin.net for updates.

is Concurrent Sessions implemented in the current build yet?

No, it wasn't as of 1213 but it is expected to be in the next leaked build

EDIT: Thanks for your kind words & Actions voodoo :D

any closer to a beta? or even projected release date?

Every day is one day closer!!! :woot:. I am still expecting the BETA to be announced first half of June and release Second Half June/Start of July.

*This is an educated guess however*

SP2 Update - Absolutely no new news from Redmond for over 2 weeks now... which is kind of unusual in the world of leaks.

2k SP4 has gone to a RC1 Refresh and looks like going final in the next couple of weeks. I mention it because last year when 2k SP3 went final.... XP SP1 went Beta... Will history repeat itself?!?

The only way to know for sure is to keep checking Neowin.net :D

Thanks for Checking back....

Leebobs

well xbetas just leaked build 1213- its old.. but now latest leaked

Its not been leaked yet... but they are going to leak it soon.

Its a good build but doesn't contain Concurrent Sessions. We are expecting the next build leak to contain that.... which may be why it is taking so long for it to happen!!

1)uninstall then re-install service pack 1 and then service pack 2

2)run the setup in compatibilty mode and click "Windows 2000"

3)run it and it will tell you that it will only work with windows xp

4)click the compatibilty box and uncheck everything

5)run it again, it should work

This worked for me!

I had sp2 v1204 now its v1213 :D Im happy

    • Apple is expanding Private Cloud Compute beyond its own data centers by Pradeep Viswanathan At WWDC 2026, as part of the improved Apple Intelligence capabilities, Apple today announced that it is expanding Private Cloud Compute (PCC), its privacy-focused cloud infrastructure for Apple Intelligence, beyond its own data centers for the first time. Private Cloud Compute was designed to handle Apple Intelligence requests that are too complex to run fully on-device. The PCC system does not store user data and does not allow Apple or anyone else to access user requests. Last year, Apple also expanded its Security Bounty program with rewards of up to $1 million for researchers who could find serious vulnerabilities in PCC. Until now, Apple's PCC data centers were using Apple's own silicon. As part of the expansion, Apple is working with Google and NVIDIA to run new Apple Intelligence workloads on Google Cloud systems powered by NVIDIA GPUs. Apple will be using this new infrastructure to execute more demanding AI tasks while maintaining the same privacy and security guarantees of PCC. The new implementation uses NVIDIA Confidential Computing with NVIDIA GPUs, Intel CPUs with TDX, and Google’s Titan chip. Apple says it has worked with Google to build additional protections beyond a traditional confidential computing deployment. Despite the expansion to third-party data centers, Apple claims that its core PCC requirements remain unchanged, including stateless computation, no privileged runtime access, non-targetability, and verifiable transparency. The company highlighted that it will continue to control the PCC software stack, and Apple devices will only trust PCC software that has been cryptographically approved by Apple. To take security to the next level, Apple mentioned that it is maintaining an append-only ledger of Google Cloud hardware that is part of the PCC fleet. The company claims this will help reduce the risk of supply chain attacks. In addition to AI infrastructure, Apple also worked with Google to use technologies behind the Gemini family of models to build the next generation of Apple Foundation Models to power Apple Intelligence features across on-device and cloud workloads. As expected, for more demanding AI tasks like agentic tool use and complex reasoning, Apple will rely on the expanded PCC infrastructure running on Google Cloud. The expansion of PCC on Google Cloud will gradually ramp toward the full set of protections during the summer preview period. As before, Apple will also publish binaries for public inspection, provide research tooling, and give researchers access to live PCC nodes in research mode through the Apple Security Bounty Program.
    • my problem with outlook (new) is that it connects only to outlook.com. all connections to external providers goes through there. Got your mail server and want to use imap directly? no way... it adds a connector on outlook.com. last bug; if your email on an external provider if the same as principal email of your microsoft account, it doesn't work...
    • It's the only reason I finally have an iPhone (for work) and enjoy using it so much that I'm tempted to move from android next time I need to replace my own device
    • So is Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, just to mention a few. What's your point? Everyone is a threat from their enemies' perspective. I'd say that Israel is only a threat to their immediate enemies like Hamas, Hezbollah and the Iranian regime, not to anyone else.
    • The government is not the good guy either. You propose 99% of people require that the government overreach and govern their freedom of information and privacy, while ignoring the government is made up 100% of people, of which 99% are (as you described) brain dead. You can't have both. The reality is Signal is absolutely right and the government is doing what it has always done. Ignoring that we are their boss and grabbing all the power they possibly can to make sure we aren't. Your (societies) ###### parenting is not reason enough as to why I can't have a safe platform for my data/information. Thinking the government is helping is precisely what they are targeting psychologically to take suckers like you for a ride. "Think of the children" was, has, is, and will always be a mechanism of control. In the rare occasion it's actually essential the mass consensus has always been there and it doesn't become a debate.
