[Mint] Switch Desktop Preferences Easily?
Brandon H and one other reacted to Nick H. for a topic
For them that are interested, a guy over at Linux Mint figured out where the script was going wrong. It requires the following at the beginning of the script: #!/bin/bash So for the full script: #!/bin/bash if [ $(gsettings get org.cinnamon.desktop.background.slideshow slideshow-enabled) == "false" ] ; then gsettings set org.cinnamon.desktop.background.slideshow slideshow-enabled true gsettings set org.cinnamon.desktop.background.slideshow image-source "directory:///home/username/destination_folder" gsettings set org.cinnamon.desktop.background.slideshow delay 10 gsettings set org.cinnamon.desktop.background.slideshow random-order true else gsettings set org.cinnamon.desktop.background.slideshow slideshow-enabled false gsettings set org.cinnamon.desktop.background picture-uri "file:///home/username/path_to_image_blahblah.jpg" fi I've already asked about why that makes a difference to how the system interprets the script, but for now I have my wallpaper sorted! As I said in the thread, next up is dealing with the screensaver. But this is an awesome progression!2 points -

Great for VR users but where the ###### is Half-Life 3 or ANY normal continuation of the series? I mean jesus christ, its going to be 2020 and we're still on a god damn cliffhanger. Even movies that never got sequels that had cliffhangers, got sequels finally to resolve said cliffhanger. Books that you thought would never get a sequel, got a sequel. But not one of the most celebrated games ever, oh no! Sorry, I'm worried I might literally die before we get a continuation of the games at this point.2 points -

Older Surface devices get driver updates to address connectivity issues
NXTwoThou and one other reacted to George P for a topic
Had to reboot my SP3 last night as it disconnected from my router and couldn't see mine, nor any other router nearby. Network troubleshooter didn't do squat, disabling device and reenabling device didn't fix the issue, reboot and everything was back to normal. It just did a firmware update yesterday and I assumed it was related but didn't have further time to diagnose. When I get home I'm rather curious to see the driver version number. I've seen that wifi issue on older HP laptops I had. Wifi would just drop and it couldn't find anything till you did a reboot. It's some weird driver issue I think, it just dies, and it says it's on but it's frozen basically.2 points -

Season 2 of this show was a slog to get though on weekly basis, but it was so worth sticking with it. This latest episode (407) has to be one of the most poignant pieces of television I've ever seen. Amazing craftsmanship went into this show over the years, and they somehow manage to not only top themselves, but turn the show on its head this late into its run. While the latest reveal is telegraphed pretty heavily within the context of the episode (to make it all the more crushing for Elliot to be the last one to face the truth), it really does shine a completely new light on the show. Just incredible, gut-wrenching performances from everyone involved. Man, what a show.1 point -

Apple releases iOS 13.2.3 with more fixes
300z reacted to George P for a topic
While I agree that most, if not all, software ships with bugs, this version of iOS has been the most buggy one to date I'd say. And iOS 12 was up there as well. I don't see the rush here, Apple, and others, should just slow down. Not every new phone needs a whole new version of the OS each year.1 point -
After years of suffering degrading hearing, I got a hearing aid

Mine are around $5k. Luckily, both Medicair and Medicaid paid that all off. I only ever wear it when I go out. Around the house, I never wear them. Being we are on a quieter street now, less loud out. I have trouble hearing anything that my Mom says. High voices is hard for me to hear. And she has trouble understanding me half the time with my slurred speach and stuttering, too. So, we both are damned.1 point -
MATLAB codepath tweak massively boosts AMD Ryzen CPUs' performance
hellowalkman reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
It is less about optimizing for AMD in their products, and more about finding the poor optimization in underlying code/libraries - which are outside of their development. Even in one of these examples above, a library is assuming the AMD processor doesn't have newer features. Which is hard to track down when the library is not your code. Most developers would not notice why and just assume AMD is slower. Outside of AMD, these types of development problems are far more common than people would expect. Take a cross platform OSS project that was built on Linux, and then uses a few generic libraries to 'replicate' how Linux works on Windows. Software like this is going to have a lot of redundant code, by working 'like Linux works' - and the underlying libraries are often written by Linux coders that do not understand how Windows works. The number of problems are staggering, and performance is often 1/2, 3/4 the speed of what it should be running on Windows.1 point -
The Big Wrestling Thread!
+jamwheat reacted to LOC for a topic
Can AEW use Bash at the Beach as a PPV name? Didn't WCW run those, thus WWE owns the name? Ah, quick search got this: WWE no longer own the rights to the 'Bash at the Beach' trademark as it was left to expire in 2004/2005 after their purchase of WCW. Cody Rhodes EVP for All Elite Wrestling (AEW) trademarked the name in early 2019 as it was created by his father, Dusty Rhodes. AEW Bash at the Beach was announced on November 18, 2019.1 point -

Geezy reacted to Ccl Ncc for a topic
Not sure why companies are still not optimizing code for AMD, they have been having huge market since last two years and still there are plenty of application which don't support them! Same happened in GPU space as well, all the ML framework are mainly optimized for CUDA which is only available in nvidia so you can't use AMD GPu's in that regards. (I totally understand why chose CUDA, but after all these years they shows have came up with something!)1 point -

Google adds 10 more games to launch day line-up for Stadia
astropheed reacted to trojan_market for a topic
Meh. This whole stadia is another over hyped google “experiment” which they haven’t put as much thought as they should have before launching but it’s nice to push PlayStation and Xbox to push their cloud streaming competitors soon that has all the nice titles. 1. google doesn’t have contents (games) as Sony and Microsoft have. These are launch titles and none of them is google exclusive because they don’t have any studios 2. google may have technology but not the ecosystem or fan base as Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo currently have 3. they haven’t really thought about streaming challenges and they are prematurely launching it IMHO. No deal with telecoms or ISPs for all the overhead excessive bandwidth is required to play these games 4. for casual gamers which I assume this is for, they already own at least one of the three consoles and they play games with no lag, no high speed internet or excessive bandwidth required for free. I feel like this will have the same fate of google glass1 point -

Because microfluidics is not a trivial topic. Getting the nozzels and pressure just right so that the materials will flow, and then backflow - but not too much - is tricky. My guess is that this is still highly sensitive to the viscosity and temperature of the printing material as well.1 point -

PYTinkerbell reacted to LOC for a topic
You guys don't understand how powerful Jackson was to people. Have you ever SEEN any of his concerts? With people fainting left and right while he sings on stage? God forbid if he TOUCHED someone, they'd go through the roof of the place. Watch some of his concerts on Youtube or what have you, and watch as grown men and women (yes, men) faint and fall to the floor and have to be DRAGGED by security/officials to safety. Not that I'm saying any of this justifies killing yourself because Jackson died, but I wouldn't look down on someone because of suicide. It's an unwelcome stigma like all the others. Just because one attempts/commits suicide doesn't mean someone was weak or was pathetic. Sure, some are, but I doubt the majority are.1 point -

PYTinkerbell reacted to Calum for a topic
Now, I love The Killers, I adore them; everything about them. Some would call it 'obbsessed' (just ask PureLegend or bmaher how much I listen to them ;)). I think Brandon Flowers is the most amazing person, that I know of, ever to walk this earth - the way he looks, the way he dresses, his voice, the lyrics he writes, his laugh... everything about him. He is stunning and amazing, however, I don't even understand how people can become obsessed to the point of stalking their idol, let alone killing themselves, just because that person dies. If Brandon Flowers died, I'd be devastated, especially as he is not even half-way through his career and there will be more albums to come , but even if he was at the end of his career, I'd be absolutely gutted. I could possibly, but not definately, become sad to the point of crying, just because I'd be thinking about his personal life and how he would have been taken away from his loving family, which is an awful thing to think about, not to mention it would feel like such a waste; but that's about it and I see nothing wrong with that. But... killing yourself? Seriously? It's one person who you don't even know. I wouldn't even kill myself if my wife/girlfriend or mother died let alone someone I admire but do not know. I don't see why anyone would? There is much more to life than Michael Jackson or Brandon Flowers and that should be the case for everyone. If you think there is nothing more, you are wrong. If you are at a position in life where you think it is pointless to carry on because your life is that bad, then suicide is not the answer - life can always be better if you want it to and if you try hard enough. This is coming from somebody who admires Micahel Jackson an awful lot (with no opinion on his court cases, as he was found innocent) and still finds it hard to accept that he has passed away.1 point
