  1. One of the biggest Go players retires due to the rise of invincible AI players

Why is he taking his loss to AI so seriously? It's just a machine, not a human. Compete against real people again in the future.

  3. I do not understand the outrage for this. Isn't this always the case for all digital mapping services? I am not here to debate what happened to Crimea was right or wrong. Take Kashmir for example, Borders are changed/dashed depending on the countries you look from. Hasn't this always been the case? Much ado about nothing IMO.

  4. No it was not legal. Crimea has been part of Russia for centuries. Stalin merged it with the Ukraine during the Soviet era. Crimeans never wanted to be Ukrainian. They voted to go back home. Just because it ###### off the Europeans doesn't mean it was illegal.

  5. The people of Crimea (mainly descendants of Russians) voted to be annexed to Russia. Russia decided that it's ok, you are welcome in Russia. However, and suddenly, democracy does not work, and if you say otherwise, then you are a pro-Putin (or Nazi). Was the election rigged? Well, nobody has proved that it was rigged. In any case, nobody cared about Crimea, especially Ukraine. But, it was in the way of a big project to transport gas to Europe and everybody when bananas about it (everybody = Germany), including the son of Biden. Of course, IT IS ILLEGAL TO RESEARCH IT. So help me out. A country votes that something a region of its country is doing is illegal. Yet because Crimea voted, that makes it legal ? 🧐 Do local votes supersede Ukrainian law? Honest question, I don’t know. Ukraine elected a president democratically, then, he suffered a coup d'etat (illegal but the EU says it was legal because it was the will of the people). And while everything was cooking, Crimea decided to move out of Ukraine, and again, the will of the people. However, this time it is not considered legal because it lacked the procedures and red tapes. Ukraine is a mess thanks to Europe. So, what is doing the US army here?

  11. It's genuinely remarkable how good smartphones are now for many forms of photography. These cameras are doing things better now that lower end SLRs were doing 5 years ago in many areas. The next step is to work on the telephoto end, but for me, as someone who has been doing photography for nearly 20 years, I leave my 1D and 5D at home a lot now and just use my iPhone or GoPro for many things. The SLRs have become very niche; something I've been saying would happen for years. Computational photography was on the horizon at least 5 years ago, and that's when I realised that it was the future of photography. It's just sad the big camera makers have been asleep at the wheel all this time. Imagine pairing their sensor and lens technology with computational algorithms from Google or Apple.... Adobe now also needs to watch out, because if jpegs become "good enough" paired with lightweight and intuitive in-camera apps, then they are next to become niche.

  12. Oh, come on. Horses and greyhounds run faster than humans, let alone motorcycles. And we still have the Olympics. Lee Se-dol's brain consumes some 20-30 Watts. Alpha go consists of how many servers consuming how many kilowatts? If Alpha go where to beat everyone consuming 30 Watts we might have a case. -

Pairing zero action latency, access to all locations of map in strategy games at once, queuing of actions even if human can't do them or just brute forcing the outcome makes it impossible for human to compete. Not because we're stupid, but because it's not even a same playing field.

Not to mention Youtube and hell, my phone! QQ. Anti-competitive practices should not be encouraged and people should not look the other way just because it suits little ol’ you.

  18. So it's Google's fault that nobody wants to use the other services? Google is giving the other services the same access, but the traffic just isn't going to them. Google can't force people to click on alternatives if people don't want them.

  23. Either that or no monthly fee and you only buy the games I wonder if they make it out of the growing pains... I pity the early adopters. I doubt they can do that, if there is no monthly fee, Google will only get a one off cut per game sale and if say someone buys RDR 2 and clocks up hundreds of hours, Google still have to pay for all that hardware and bandwidth use and I doubt a one off cut from the games is going to cut that. Which begs the question about that free 1080p tier, I suspect if too many gamers jump onto that, they will likely scrap it. The hardware is still there for the end user, they still need to get money from users to upgrade their hardware, they're limiting the power developers can use (Destiny 2), users can't pick graphics settings and get stuck with uncompetitive configurations... The value isn't there. Especially when if you want streaming, today we can do remote play and stream from our own consoles and that will only improve, and there are subscriptions that complement our consoles that allow for more streaming options like PSNow and xCloud, and with PSNow and GamePass you can fall back on downloading to play locally... Alphabet are going to have a very hard time convincing people to pick their option.

  24. Glad someone's saying something! I'm reminded of high school, when we would sit and discuss how people could legitimately turn a blind eye to the atrocities of WW2. Yet here we are today, with people of a particular religion... being rounded up into camps, to "re-educate" them. And when news outlets are allowed in to "investigate", it's like a big choreographed event (as they describe it), much like North Korea does when they allow media inside. News to the contrary though continues to spill out... It's like people forgot how the Jews were pushed into ghettoes before being transported to concentration camps. Makes me wonder how much worse things will get, before people figure it out...

  25. Trump is now opening factories for Apple? Hahaha. Left-wing or democrats are always making me laugh with ignorant comments So, he literally says this on national TV with his own mouth. And I am somehow ignorant? He said it twice, once in front of a live camera, and tweeted it. I mean, feel free to continue to listen to your propaganda and not self-educate. But it makes you look obviously silly. I’m still chuckling over this. Should snip it and post it in the Funny Political Pictures thread.

  38. Apple removes customer reviews from its online store

Are you saying the only place to get reviews on Apple products on the Apple web site? You know reviews for Apple products can be found in other places? You know people will look for reviews everywhere they can? Of course you do! I'm well aware of that but I'm also aware that a lot of consumers won't look for reviews and either will just buy it there and then or look at what a few people are saying about the app in the store front. Many developers complained about the exact same thing on Steam because Steam makes it easy to rate games and see what others are thinking of it at any given time and it does have an impact on sales. So Apple isn't doing it because of the people that know how to check for reviews, they are doing it to the people that don't check for reviews and buy off what the developers say about the app. Also, if they've not done this to the Apple store on phones yet, it looks like they might be testing the water to see how it goes before rolling it out on the App Store. It's all about the cut, Apple knows they will get more impulsive buyers buying apps without knowing if it's any good by consumers knowing less about what they are buying. Again, nothing to do with the App Store, developers, nor does it foreshadow anything, as Google and Samsung don't have reviews for their products on their website either. 🤷‍♂️ Does Samsumg sell apps on its website where it takes a cut from each app sold? In the case of Apple, they take a cut off every app sold so it makes a big difference. The real question is, how many actually check for reviews on a product or just buy blind of what the developers tell them about the product. What Apple seems to want to do here is increases the chance that many will buy blind, and they will because many don't research what they are buying into and that is likely what Apple is banking on to make more money. In fact, many developers complained about Steam on the PC because of user reviews as it makes it much easier to see if the game is any good at a glance, it also might be the reason why the Epic store doesn't have it and even when they do, it likely will be optional and I suspect that most developers will switch that off if they can because they know they will likely sell more to blind buyers. Why are you still talking about apps? This is not the App Store, they're talking about the online retail portion where you buy physical products, NOT apps. Go to apple.com to see what I'm talking about. I agree with you when it comes to app stores, but that's a totally separate thing. Because this is Apple we are talking about and greed comes a standard with them, if they are doing this in other parts of the business, it's very likely they are testing the water to see how it fares before rolling it out to the app store. The problem is that it's easy for Apple to do because they have compleat control over the ecosystem of where you buy the apps on its phones. That's stupid. Apple makes money from their app store, in part because of the ratings/review system. One has nothing to do with the other, especially in terms of sheer usage. There's plenty of stuff to be angry at Apple over, but let's not make up stuff when we don't have to... The review system has nothing to do with it, the fact is, if you want to buy an app, you have no choice but to buy it through the app store with Apple phones. We've seen enough of this with Steam over the years how user reviews can impact sales of games, developers if they could would prefer if you buy blind and in the case of Apple, buying blind is good for taking a bigger cut. Except we're talking about accessories like cases and dongles, something that you don't see reviews for on Google or Samsung stores just the same. Nothing to do with apps. I'm done replying to this, we're talking in circles because you keep talking about something the article has nothing to do with and zero insinuation of.
