  3. It's the same weird logic they had with Steam. Uh oh bad Steam, taking X cut for providing an automated storefront that is super known and popular among users, runs free exposure for you, does ALL the hosting for you, provides reviewing and rating functionality, cloud saves, all the networking API's, the lot. And then you feel 30% cut is "too big". How!? 50% cut would be big. 60% cut would be big. That's how much publishers used to take from developers of games back in the day iirc. 30% seems quite fair unless you are simply greedy. If it was just server hosting, 30% is much, but they actually run a full reliable store front for you as a game developer. You literally just plop a game up there and you're selling it. 30% goes to them, 70% goes to you. I'd say it feels perfectly reasonable ratio given majority of the hard work outside of coding the game itself is then done by them. And when your game is so popular, you're actually having it cheap. Just the costs of data servers feeding all the terabytes of data to users can result in massive costs, let alone a storefront that needs to be maintained and operational. That's all Valve's doing. Or Google's in GooglePlay case.

  4. Tim Sweeney in 2018: "On open platforms like PC, Mac, and Android, Epic’s goal is to bring its games directly to customers. Avoiding the 30% “store tax” is a part of Epic’s motivation." Tim Sweeney at the end 2019: "Let us in Google!!!!! Why won't you do all the work for us and let us keep all the money? Bad Google! Bad Google!" I'd like to see him try the same stunt with Apple. I wonder why we don't see him criticising the iOS store or Apple's fully closed platform much. I don't think Google's 30% revenue share is fair but apparently Sweeney has no problem accepting it on Apple's platform.

  7. Everybody including MS knows what went wrong. Too late to the game, after laughing it off. Too many reboots once they got serious. Consumers felt put off being left in cold without having to do a device upgrade. It's not rocket science. They really had something with WP7 and blew it afterwards. Poor management. And them spending too much time listening to die hard fanboys who would flock to new devices, but never noticed that regular consumers were ###### about WP7 devices being locked out. Spending the time and resources to make desktop Windows like mobile also could have been utilized elsewhere. Not to mention myself and plenty other devs out there got tired of having to do complete rebuilds of apps for every reboot, for a market share that wasn't bringing any meaningful ROI. The most profit we ever made on WP apps was back when WP7 came out... after that we never made any money back. Can't have a healthy phone market without apps or services to run on it.

  10. I'm with you, before MS would put a prompt hidden in the systray, we all know how good that works for average users who don't bother to even look in that area. At the very least if you don't want to upgrade or get new hardware MS has let you know and it's now on users to take whatever action they want.

Techies that know what they're doing and don't care are one thing, but the average user should be made aware in whatever way possible that their system is going out of support. At this point standard users really should upgrade or buy new equipment to stay secure and running smoothly if their machine is connected to the internet.

Too many developers are signing exclusivity deals with them and taking the games off of platforms I would rather buy them on. My game library is fragmented enough. If they don't like Google's model, they can always start their own mobile distribution platform. Obviously they think they have clout.

  29. Tesla Model 3 on Autopilot crashes into two cars in Connecticut

Auto pilot is not auto pilot, and needs to be marketed as such. From Wikipedia: “An autopilot is a system used to control the trajectory of an aircraft without constant ‘hands-on’ control by a human operator being required. Autopilots do not replace human operators, but instead they assist them in controlling the aircraft.” It's not self-driving. AutoPilot does exactly what it says it is. Regardless, it's statistically safer than human beings. "Regardless, it's statistically safer than human beings" Why, because there aren't nearly the same numbers of these on the road? I sure don't want to be around some idiot in one of these cars when I'm on the road. In statistics there is a thing called a Ratio that allows you to compare two different things, even if there is not the same amount of those two different things.

"The owner of the Model 3 claimed that he had engaged Autopilot to check on his dog at the back of the car" It's not a greyhound bus where the back is 40 feet away. Could he not have just used the rear-view mirror to glance at the dog.

  31. Tesla Model 3 on Autopilot crashes into two cars in Connecticut

These people always blame autopilot when they get into a crash. Luckily all this data is recorded, so time will tell if the driver lied. Regardless, they'll find the root cause and continue to improve the technology. It's still lightyears ahead of having a dangerous human operator that kill 10 million people every year.

macOS is the differentiator. but you can build a great PC that will run macos. the cost is just ridiculous. this basically means they don't give a damn. it is basically like buying a Bentley, the car itself is nothing special, Mercedes does everything better, yet you are throwing stupid money to get something with the Bentley look. and yes, even if i had the money i would never buy a bentley, i would buy S-class instead.

  33. In many cases though, that one app that doesn't run on Win10 for whatever reason, might have another app out there that does the same thing that will. In many cases people don't take the time to find a replacement app and just stick with the one they know already. MS really needs to push hard with things like app-v and just run these older apps in a container and or emulated/virtualized which lets people run them but also doesn't put the system at risk.

  36. Apple bet on the wrong supplier with this system. They should have gone with an AMD EPYC or Threadripper configuration. It would run circles around this Intel based unit and probably at a much lower price too. A PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD system alone would have blown anything PCIe 3.0 away.

  40. Yeah, it does require that you have those clients installed, however, there is an option in Settings to close the other client (say Origin) after you exit a game on that platform. It was added in the update previous to this. You can find the option in Settings, in the Features tab under Platforms. Thanks for the info. I thought that I'd read somewhere you were able to do that, but I guess I wasn't paying full attention at the time.

On Android theirs other app stores such as Amazon’s and even Samsung’s Galaxy Store, which has quite a large marker share given the number of Samsung Android devices out there. Epic could even partner with gaming phone manufacturers such as Asus & Razer to get their store / game in front of people.

  45. It’s driver assist at best. That is correct. Tesla does not dispute that. It's not full self-driving technology and the driver is supposed to pay attention and keep their hands on the steering wheel. How about Tesla calling it driver assist to appease the masses into avoiding them thinking it’s more than that? Look, there's a lot of differing ways to think about this but a few facts have already been established: 1. "Autopilot" is fine for a name. You, personally, may not like it, but the name itself doesn't imply anything. Autopilot in other systems does not abdicate operator responsibility; the same is true here. There are an awful lot of poorly named things in this universe -- and lets be clear here, the name has absolutely nothing to do with the function. If this system were called "hey numbnuts, keep paying attention to the road" instead of "autopilot" you'd still have people having accidents. And then what would you complain about? 2. Even if you did get a global renaming policy completed, it won't change the system. There are people who have no driver assist systems at all who do the exact same things and get into accidents all the time; this is only news because someone didn't follow the rules. Not following the rules causes accidents. Lets stop calling them "stop signs" and call them "engage your brake systems now" signs, because people keep running through them. Lets not call them speed limit signs, lets call them "car control risk threshhold numerics" because no one listens to those either. You cannot fix human stupidity through renaming of product. The product is what it is and does precisely what it says it does, with the appropriate warnings. I guarantee you every Tesla owner absolutely knows these systems are not removing responsibility from the owner. You never hear after accidents like these: "Oh I just turned around to look for my dog and TOTALLY EXPECTED my car to avoid every possible accident". This is only news because it involves autonomous systems, and just happened to be a statistical anomaly. Not to overly defend Tesla (but I guess I am), there are less accidents as a result of their autonomous systems than there are without them and the system keeps improving. As for "Auto pilot is not auto pilot and needs to be marketed as such" -- when you get ANY Tesla system it defines it very explicitly: Autopilot Included - Enables your car to steer, accelerate and brake automatically for other vehicles and pedestrians within its lane -- with the note: "The currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous" I recognize this is a horrible accident that shouldn't have happened. I recognize that it sucks. Any accident does. But the system itself is fine, the name is fine, and people are still stupid. I just hope the system can learn from this and whatever caused this accident to occur wasn't a total waste.

  47. New BioShock game in development under new studio, 2K confirms

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they haven't mentioned anywhere that Ken Levine was gonna be part of this. As a matter of fact, didn't he say he was done with Bioshock before? This makes me wonder about this. Is this another company trying to milk a successful franchise for all it's worth while completely screwing up what made it good in the first place? I hope not... He's not, he's got a new studio though but they haven't said anything since coming together in 2017. So who knows what he's working on? This is a new studio, so I expect another bioshock 2, probably. They could have good story writers though, only time will tell.

  48. Users on Windows 10 version 1809 are starting to be moved to 1909

I find it interesting that people will offer technical opinion, based on their expertise, without the realization that someone with actual expertise can achieve the same goal more easily and with a better outcome. (I feel sad for the 5 people that hit like on this.) Seriously, if someone is recommending staying on old builds or pushing LTSC to average users, shouldn't they be able to write a script or web search and copy a script? Especially, when using old builds and screwing with LTSC creates far more work than maintaining an install/update script. (Even if you had 100 PCs and didn't know how to use other deployment features provided by Microsoft, a script is faster and offers more options in what to keep and remove.) Also the 'complaints' about perceived bloat come from myth, at best insignificant, or are no longer relevant. For example: Cortana sucks so much CPU RAM (/s) - it is exactly ZERO unless the user enables it, and ZERO again if they ever choose to disable it. I bet that ZERO RAM/CPU use is a killer on anything slower than an 8086. FFS. Then there is the 'horrible' Store and UWP Apps... Even when being actively used with hundreds of Apps to maintain, the Store and keeping everything updated consumes almost a full minute of CPU processing time on average in a 24hr time period. If that is killing performance, you might have other problems. Much of this still comes from people that seem to think Windows works like other OS technologies, and just having something sitting on the hard drive is the same thing as running or requiring the loading of lower level processes even if the software isn't active. (If Windows NT worked like OS X or Linux, an argument for removing unused features would be valid; however, Windows NT is quite different, and applying rules of optimization based on older OS models is a waste of time.) In perspective... Something as heavy as the full WSL being installed/enabled consumes ZERO CPU time and ZERO RAM when not running. Yet people still think something like Cortana left disabled is 'bloating' their system. Really? ----- Also, I haven't even touched on the features, software and hardware support and performance differences in the newer builds. Just the new kernel adjustments, and other mitigation optimizations bring a huge jump in performance on most CPUs, adding to the partially active reptoline changes in 1809. There are also the specific AMD scheduler and core priority changes in 1903, with additional optimizations in 1909. A PSA... Unless your PC is a Kiosk or a specialized interface or appliance, or going to be used on the ISS, there are very few 'real' reasons to use or mess with the LTSB. Seriously, save time and money and just find a script to rip out whatever crap your 'expert' friends said was bad. But also keep in mind, that 99% of the mythic 'evil crap' consumes nothing but a few MB of space on the HD, and in 2019, if a few MB is a storage issue, your hard drive might be too small.
