Should I upgrade my rig or stick with it?

I agree, we've been stuck on 4 core for so long because AMD couldn't do anything till Zen. Still, I think we'll see 6 - 8 core become the majority for desktops in the next few years. Very few people need more than 8, specially if you're just doing light work and gaming. And for the rest who do more heavy tasks, the current 12- 18 core high end desktop chips have them covered.1 point -

if you want a quick boost you can get a 2070 super for <£500 which will see you through another couple of years and will still be ok when you replace motherboard, cpu and ram. Also as ddr3 is so cheap now grab yourself another 16gb for a total of 32gb.1 point -

Kind of disappointed that they haven't continued development of the Power Cover accessory, which was able to considerably supplement the primary pack. Wouldn't bother me to take a hit on the tablet-minus-cover side knowing that with the cover attached I'd still get 8+ hours.1 point -

Stepped up from an i5 8GB 256GB Surface Pro 6 to a i7 16GB 256GB Surface Pro 7 and the performance boost is crazy. I was doing audio editing just fine on the SP6, but everything on my Pro 7 is that much faster. Biggest gripes for me is now I have to hear the fan from time to time with the i7 and as mentioned above, the battery life does take a hit. But, with the addition of quick charging this gen, I just run it a max settings unless I am recording a podcast then I dial it all the way down to make sure the fan does not kick on.1 point -

I would stick, if I were a betting man. The current rig seems decent, I'd probably be using it for another few years. But I'm a light-weight in this, I will run my hardware into the ground before I consider moving on.1 point -

I question the "high demand". Everyone bemoans the $1k price sticker on current smartphones. How can a phone, regardless if it's foldable, have a higher demand when it is $500 MORE than the top tier current flagships? Factor that in with previous comments of how they can't ship whatever allotment they were supposed to have in January and I definitely see something wrong with this picture. Looking back in time at the Moto Xoom. It WAS to be the king of tablets until they announced the starting price of $300 MORE than what people were expecting. That killed the momentum for the device and it ended up with a very small marketshare. Months later they finally dropped the price, but it was too late, demand was gone. History could be repeating itself, they may be faking this "high demand" issue.1 point -
Google adds achievements to Stadia, with some limitations
Azilgath reacted to DeusProto for a topic
The sooner this fails the better. Preferably leaving a crater sized loss of money so the idea doesn't come up for at least another 10 years. If this takes off it will be the end of perpetual game ownership and having the freedom to play when you want, how you want, and for however long you want. And preservation will be a thing of the past. So imagine Game A, A Stadia exclusive, is available for only 5 years. So 6 years later you have a hankering to play Game A. But you can't - all because the majority bought into Stadia and didn't care about the long term consequences of playing games in such a strict walled garden where content can be whisked away or heavily altered (censorship, removal of music to avoid paying further royalties, etc) without warning. So all you're left with to scratch that itch is watching old Twitch or YouTube playthrough videos. Compare that with some NES game you spent playing in your childhood. Now - over 3 decades later you can still play those in a myriad of ways because the content was stored on some media that could be copied and preserved. Preservation of games should not be yet another thing sacrificed at the altar of instant gratification and convenience. I hope this fails so spectacularly that it makes any investor laugh at the prospect of ever investing in another attempt again. Efforts should instead focus on things like Steam Link and similar - where the consumer has the local copy of the game data and streams it from a device that they are in control of and thus the consumer is the arbiter of content availability. The only thing that makes this possible end of days regarding preservation palatable is that I find the vast majority of AAA games to be garbage. And indie developers will likely still release things that you play locally (or stream from a device or server you control). This is one time I am glad the internet infrastructure in the U.S. is in such a horrid state that many people are still subject to data caps. That is a safeguard against this getting popular enough to make PC gaming and local play game consoles no longer profitable. With walled garden video and music streaming services preservation is still possible as the content can be captured -- usually bit for bit. But that isn't going to be possible with games that are exclusive to corporate-controlled server based streaming. Perhaps if they guaranteed to release a local copy of exclusive games once they are removed from their service it would be more acceptable. But I wouldn't trust any public traded corporation to adhere to such a promise.1 point -

Microsoft's next-gen Xbox is simply called 'Xbox', Series X is the model number
Javier Goldman reacted to Xerxes for a topic
Kinda is but kinda isn't. The "One" is a model name correct, however, it is the model FAMILY name for that entire generation of systems. Every individual model from that family must include "One" in their model name to show it's from that model family. Just as "360" was from the previous generation. Next-Gen systems do not have a model family name, they are simply "Xbox". Your assumption about PlayStation model numbers seems logical and fair to me!1 point -
