Should I upgrade my Ryzen 3 1200 CPU?
hellowalkman reacted to nhjay for a topic
You are correct in that I'm running an 8GB + the newer 16GB as the board only has 2 slots. I have always been under the (potentially incorrect) theory that I do get dual channel, as long as there are 2, even if they are not the same size. CPU-Z's current output would support this, though that doesn't meant it is correct.1 point -

I wouldn't say that - I wouldn't trust any sort of iot device to be secure.. Yes users are stupid to reuse passwords, this happens all the time.. One of the flaws that was recently fixed was the network creds were sent in over plan http to the device when in config mode. The device could be triggered to go into config mode by just sending deauth message in wifi, etc. So saying there is "nothing" wrong is just not true at all!!1 point -

The fact is though, most people aren't upgrading their CPUs each year. In many cases you just get a new video card and you're good to go. While AMD sticks to a socket for longer, it's not forever. If I make a AM4 based system today, then by the time I'm looking at upgrading CPU, we're talking 2+ years at least. In my case it's around the 6 year mark actually. So AMD will be on a new socket by then for sure, and you're going to want to upgrade the mobo to get things like PCI-e 5.0 or DDR5/6 support etc.1 point -
Should I upgrade my rig or stick with it?
bucko reacted to Mockingbird for a topic
You current video card is on par with the GeForce RTX 2060 Super, which is >£370 For 4K, you are basically looking at GeForce RTX 2080 Super or GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. That's >£650 just for the video card alone. There is simply no affordable option for 4K right now. I would suggest you wait as far as upgrading the video card.1 point -

You video card is pretty recent and I see no reason to upgrade your video card any time soon unless you are going to be playing at 4K resolution. There’s nothing wrong with Ring security. It’s down to stupid users using the same usernames and passwords that have been compromised on other websites. Ring/Amazon should enable 2FA, but these security issues have nothing to do with any exploits within the ring infrastructure.1 point -
Need For Speed Payback System Support Question

The online scanning thing probably didn't detect the 1050ti properly (instead saw the integrated Intel GPU). The recommended settings for 1080p at 60 fps are: CPU: Intel i5 4690K @ 3.5GHz (4 Cores, 4 Threads) or AMD FX 8350 @ 4.0GHz (8 Cores, 8 Threads) RAM: 8GB VIDEO: AMD Radeon™ RX 480 4GB, NVIDIA GeForce® GTX 1060 6GB or equivalent DX11 compatible GPU with 4GB of memory https://www.ea.com/games/need-for-speed/need-for-speed-payback/news/nfs-payback-pc-requirements ...so you are just about to the recommended settings. Sure, if all you're doing is running one game. But if you want to run multiple games at high frame rate simultaneously, do streaming (twitch, Netflix), etc., Ryzen will kill. I have one monitor for Netflix/HBO, I have another for browsing/discord/teams, and I switch between games on another. Sounds like a normal PC workload 🤣1 point -

You can look at it from another perspective. Intel could have moved to 6-cores with sandy bridge and 8 with haswell on their non-HEDT platforms, but that probably would have killed AMD. This isn't a defense of intel by any means, just that in some rare cases stagnation could be beneficial in a non-competitive environment. I'm just glad that intel's complacency means that now I have a cheap 6-core ryzen 2600 with an upgrade path to 16-cores, and probably even the 4000 series.1 point -

"Programmable (Open FW SDK) Quad-core audio DSP" Lol, what? I mean, have they done any research into this because it sounds terrible. All the issues with multitudes of AC'97 drivers from back in the windows XP days or things like maxxaudio on dells which, strangely (cough) stopped working with one of the windows 10 updates. I think the majority of people want a simple sound device which just works easily, none of this DSP crap.1 point -

Windows RT Tablet - Can I Do Anything With it?
Sir Topham Hatt reacted to +InsaneNutter for a topic
Beyond Jailbreaking i dont think any alternate OS's such as Android or Linux were ever ported to RT devices. XDA developers maintained a list of desktop apps ported to Windows RT that can be used when jailbroken. Theirs also Win86emu that allows jailbroken Windows RT devices to run x86 binaries, I believe some apps work ok, however many are quite slow / don't work at all. A small list of compatible apps can be found here.1 point -
Tesla gets $1.29 billion loan from Chinese banks for its Shanghai car plant
Toysoldier reacted to +mram for a topic
Full disclosure here - Scotty has immense knowledge about cars. I do not -- I have good knowledge about technology. And as other people have pointed out in this thread, Tesla gets compared a lot to Apple, and for good reason. But lets be realistic, I wouldn't care that a standard mechanic can't deal with a Tesla, in the same way that I don't want my kids ripping apart my iPad. Cars nowadays are more technology than engine. Scotty has a fantastic point when he talks about simplicity and reliability and serviceability, but all of that comes with tradeoffs. Do you want to keep putting in oil? Getting parts? What's the TCO on a simple, reliable engine over time? Compare that with a pure EV engine and it's pretty ridiculous. Scotty has gone on record saying the simpler the engine is the better it is in general. He's gone on and on about the complexity of the hybrid models needing both an EV powertrain added to the gasoline powertrain and it's ridiculously complex, requiring specialized training also. So he's not wrong, but understand that all of this requires highly specialized service personnel, not unique to Tesla. A Tesla (Model 3 anyway, most recent) engine doesn't need oil, or service, or anything. Short of having an accident, there's no need. It's kind of like looking at the low repair score of Apple products on iFixit and deciding that Apple products suck. The reality is that most people don't have problems, most people don't care about self repair and most people are perfectly fine with Apple servicing their stuff, because mostly they don't physically break down. The maintenance schedule of a M3 - the entire car, bear in mind - is "check brake fluids every 2 years, rotate tires, wiper fluids" ... nothing with the engine. Really. Simple... because it has a ridiculously simple and efficient engine for what it does. But in a nutshell the quality issues are mostly related to the body work, and not the technology. Tesla is comparatively new to the production line, so the whole issue with body problems has nothing to do with the powertrain and reliability. I would be careful not to assume one or the other are juxtaposed. And they are getting better over time. I'm not an apologist here, just saying that for a company that isn't even a decade old in mass-producing cars, and the M3 being only in production for a few years, it's doing really stellar at responding to quality issues. I don't think anyone can or should look at the non-complexity of a pure EV engine - at least the Tesla M3 engine - and assume that it will constantly need maintenance or work, that it will constantly break down, and require a fleet of mechanics around the world. It's not a realistic need that matches the real-world reliability of the engine and powertrain.1 point -
