IoT security done "wrong", but it works?

What you "could" do then is setup unifi stuff.. Now you can manage their site via the controller, could even be at your house, or in the cloud, etc. Or just remote into it if on their network via a cloudkey.. Now you have pretty much full insite into what is going on. You can manage all the vlans and wifi from simple gui, etc. Something like a unifi dream machine - would be drop in replacement for whatever ###### soho thing they are running now.. Its not all that cheap, but its not crazy pricey either since its full solution.. That can be expanded if needed, etc. add some switches, or other AP if needed..2 points -

Dell's XPS 13 finally gets a redesign, making it thinner, lighter, and smaller

2 x ThunderBolt 3 & micro-SD only. That's fine. I wouldn't expect premium notebooks to have old crappy USB type A ports anymore in 2020. My mouse Dongle would be quite sad, cause it would stick out that much more with an adapter, but I probably wouldn't use a mouse much with this device.1 point -

Duly noted on the community spotlights. What do you mean you were wrong about Minecraft being a good acquisition? Do you mean for Microsoft, Mojang, the players, or all of the above? I didn't expect Minecraft to be a worthwhile investment is what I meant, as having played the crap out of it when it was still a PC only game, I figured the hype would die as I and many friends lost interest. It didn't though and is now on just about every device imaginable, was played for a long while by Pewdiepie who's running with 100k subs now, and a crap ton of merch, toys, and spinoffs... It's just a good brand for Microsoft.1 point -

Outlook is the latest Microsoft Android app to pass 100 million installs on the Play Store
sphbecker reacted to PGHammer for a topic
Outlook (Android OR Windows) is popular because it does what users want and need - without getting in their way. Also, it costs squat. (While Outlook for Windows is part of Microsoft Office, it is also available standalone - and has been since Outlook 97 - at a cost of zero if you simply upgrade from a previous version; Outlook 98 for Windows was actually given away to the planet at large; note there was no Office 98 for Windows. While Outlook has been known as a Microsoft Exchange client, it has supported POP3 from the beginning, and gained IMAP4 chops with that given-away Outlook 98 - that means it can completely replace any POP3 or IMAP4 client - on either Windows or Android - including GMail. (And if you use Outlook for Windows, you can now use the same software on Android - in fact, why wouldn't you? If you are worried about losing being able to use Google Contacts OR Calendar, you won't; I've used Outlook both on my current Pixel 3a and the S7 it replaced - and still use both Contacts and Calendar.) Was Outlook 98 free? Back then I had just gotten my first job doing desktop support and I remember my company's standard install was to install Office 97 and then upgrade to Outlook 98. I asked my boss if we paid extra for Outlook 98 and he said it was included with our Exchange license, but he could have been wrong. You could do either; Outlook 98 was also given away as bundleware with any computer-related magazine you cared to name - it did not require a previous version of either Office OR Outlook. (What a lot of folks forgot was that both Windows 95 and Windows NT back to 3.1 included Exchange Client with the operating system; Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0 continued the trend, and so has every version of Windows since until - surprise - Windows 8 - the first Windows OS to NOT include an Exchange client since Windows 3.1 (even Windows for Workgroups included an Exchange client). However, bundling of Office made the inclusion of an Exchange client in Windows pretty much pointless.1 point -

Noir Angel reacted to sphbecker for a topic
I agree. Its frustrating to see a product with a capable GPU chip that is crippled by other seemingly silly limitations. Having said that, all chips cost about the same to make. High-end chips are a bit more rare so you have some supply/demand going on, but the prices are somewhat arbitrary. RAM configurations and PCIe lanes are a way to make a meaningful change to the cost of making a card.1 point -
Definitive Best Back-up Software 2020
goretsky reacted to ThaCrip for a question
I think stuff is sort of conflicting a bit on the poll as say Clonezilla vs Google Drive for example... I like both but they are different as Clonezilla is good basic hard drive imaging software where as something like Google Drive is good for backing up some files occasionally since it's got 15GB (I got 17GB) which is decent for those who just need some storage space online but nothing major. so they are sort of in a difference class of backup. but I like Clonezilla as you just burn the ISO to CD-RW (or the like) or make a bootable USB drive etc and reboot PC and it will work. but I do think there is a small learning curve with it (since while it's not hard to use, as anyone half way decent with computers should have no trouble using it, I could see an average person struggling to use it since it's not super straight forward) as I suspect other software of similar type, like say Macrium Reflect for example, will be a bit easier for the common person since you can run it from within Windows etc (although one would still need to create the bootable CD/DVD/USB in order to restore something if Windows is not bootable for example). since I am on Linux Mint it has 'Timeshift' with it which is good for occasional use but it does eat up storage space fairly quickly which is why I just do an occasional manual image but once my system is in good running order I usually will delete all Timeshift images and reboot PC and image the boot drive to a file on another hard drive with Clonezilla maybe once or twice a month. so I guess ill vote for Clonezilla at the moment as I see something like Google Drive mostly good for small file backup here and there as for general data backup I tend to use hard drives and preferably external. but I figure at the very least, one should have a bare minimum of two copies of their semi-important/important data on two different hard drives as even if they are both internal, they could be potentially at risk for viruses(mainly if one is on Windows), at least you got pretty good protection against hardware failure as I would imagine the chances of both hard drives dying at the same time is minimal (maybe some sort of power surge could take them both out(?) but I suspect if you use a decent PSU, I would imagine this is not likely to happen (at least this seems to be the case in my experience with dead PSU's in that they just die and you swap the PSU and your PC is good again)). NOTE: but for higher importance stuff like family vids/photos, I usually burn to DVD in addition to the two hard drive stuff etc (with external hard drive copies to). but I will admit, I do slack a bit on burning stuff to DVD but I still have a good portion of it backed up. but in general... since people tend to be a bit lazy when it comes to data backup, it's likely a matter of time before you get burned if you don't have at least two different copies of your important data on two separate hard drives as that's what I consider a bare minimum protection against data loss.1 point -
Definitive Best PC Manufacturer for 2020
Ashton Grosse reacted to ThaCrip for a topic
Other I tend to build stuff myself as the last time I bought a pre-built desktop was in 2001 (basically I had four pre-built desktops and pretty much two do-it-myself desktops on a personal level). because while I get with the average person they tend to like simple and will likely opt for a pre-built PC with a decent warranty, I prefer building one since you can generally get better quality components for a similar price (possibly better(?)) etc. but on the two desktops I built for myself personally I have used ASUS motherboards. my current main PC I had since May 2012 although I used the case from my original one I initially built in March 2006 (was my previous main PC) but just swapped the motherboard/CPU/RAM out. in fact, the motherboard/CPU and somewhat RAM I had in the March 2006 PC, after I removed those, they were pretty much retired til about a year or so ago in which I got a hold of a cheap quality PSU (Seasonic) for only $2x.xx and used the old case from a PC I had in 2001 and put that into it which was a solid upgrade for next to no $ (it's a passable backup internet machine) and I figure even if that thing dies (it's got some swollen capacitors, which it was this way when I removed it from my computer in May 2012, but it's still rock stable), I can use the PSU in my main PC if my main PC's PSU ever dies since the PSU in my main pc was from Nov 2012 and is still going which is the longest I have had a PSU to date as it runs pretty much 24/7. it's Seasonic brand as, around the time I got it, I heard Seasonic are one of the more reliable PSU brands in general and, at least given my (limited) experience with PSU's, it's easily the longest lasting one I have had (since typically in the past all of my PSU's generally fail roughly within a year or so after the warranty ends (all previous PSU's I have had usually are 3 year warranty(one was a 2 year)) but currently that Seasonic one is past the warranty (which is a 5 year warranty) by 2 years and 2 months and counting). hell, even the one in my old PC I got roughly a year or so ago is Seasonic as I got a solid buy for only $2x.xx as not long after the person selling it must have caught on and raised their price to $40 for the same one which at that price, it's not bad, but not that great of a deal either as it's about normal price. but anyways... as for AMD vs Intel, back in March 2006, AMD was still king (which i think it was for at least 5+ years prior to that over Intel in terms of gaming and the like) but shortly after I made that Intel came out with the Core 2 Duo stuff and, to my knowledge they have pretty much been ahead ever since in terms of speed per core and I suspect they are generally more energy efficient to. but, without researching stuff too much, it seems in fairly recent memory AMD is more competitive with Intel as I think you can generally get more CPU cores for less money than a Intel CPU. so it seems like if you do stuff that uses more cores, AMD is probably a safer bet but if not, I suspect Intel is probably the safer choice still. but I plan on milking my May 2012 system (i3-2120 CPU/8GB of RAM/1050 Ti 4GB GPU etc) for as long as I can as this way when I upgrade it will be a rather large upgrade for minimal $.1 point -
Definitive Best Back-up Software 2020

In the past I would have said CrashPlan as I both used them through schooling and previously worked for them. They are no longer in the consumer market and are focused on Small Business and Enterprise only and have also made a push to focus on cyber security going forward. Since the exit from consumer side (and no longer getting Small Business for free), I have switched to a combination of OneDrive for main cloud storage and rSync for incremental backups to a local HDD.1 point -
