the problem U.S companies like Amazon and Google is paying very little tax, they make huge profits and yet put little back into the countries they are in. it is not just u.s companies, some of our own British companies does the same thing, but it is about time it was stopped. If i went and stopped paying tax, I would end up in clink and made bankrupt, so time to sort out the tax system and got people who should be paying to pay it. the thing is our goverment is full of rich people and we must not harm rich people, we most protect them. Actually you should be because it's not just France heading in that direction, it's many EU members, and we've seen how this goes in the long run where it becomes EU law and before you know it, a lot of countries around the world are doing the same thing which could get costly for the US, more so those companies that don't pay their fair share in taxes. Beside, I don't understand your logic, do you realize that these companies not paying their fair share in taxes just means you end up paying more or end up with less public services, we all shouldn't be happy with them not paying their fair share in taxes because it's passing the burden onto everyone else. LOL....paying their fair share according to whom? I have no issue at all with EU countries bearing their own tax burden. None. Further, it will have no bearing on who actually pays for things. These "big companies" will do nothing but incorporate their tax burden in to the cost of their products, and the consumer still ends up paying. The tax does nothing to help the consumer.5 points -

It's not so much ironic, it's just that a lot of these companies are paying very little tax, hence the digital tax. A lot of the bigger high tech companies pay very little tax and that is where the real problem is. So yeah I don't think this is going to blow over and I expect a lot more countries to do the same, now the US can put sanctions on them but in the end, it will only end up hurting the US if too many countries jump onboard this as those countries will put sanctions on US goods making them less valuable on the world market and the other countries will just find alternatives to those US goods. At the end of the day, it's about time these companies start paying their fair share in taxes and if it needs pressure from governments to do that then so be it.5 points -

If you mean that they have ancestors that immigrated...okay...so do most people on Earth. i was blowing off steam, because sometimes the U.s seems to think they can do what they like and it don't matter what the consequences is, I know that most people was born there and that it is your ancestors that was immigrants, like most people on earth, maybe, but many many years ago. France trying to protect their country, just like people in the UK want to protect ours, which is why we voted to get out of the E.U, because the undemocratic twisted e.u want to run our country, now we will run our own and make our own rules. the problem is the UY.S just run sin with guns blazing and while I agree that a lot of problems are casued by one part of the world, mainly one that holds a certain religion, the U.s do not make things better, certainly now with stupid Trump in charge. Myself, I would draw out all the troops, keep troops around the borders of these countries so no one can get out and let them fight it out. You're really showing how ignorant you are on this topic with your heavy bias against the US (for whatever reason)... The top level concept of this isn't hard to understand... France imposes a new tax and then the US responds with sanctions. So you think it's fair that every country gets to throw taxes and tariffs at US companies, and it's not okay for the US to respond with the same? The whole goal of this trade war is to eliminate tariffs and unnecessary taxes and allow everybody to play on a level global playing field. This problem wasn't created by Trump and it wasn't created solely be the US, so take your blinders off already... Do your brain a favor and stop letting the media do your thinking...3 points -

It's ironic when countries like France, tax/regulate innovation out of their local economy then complain when overseas companies come in and offer a product / service that is wildly popular with the consumer. The UK is also guilty of that to a certain extent. If you strangle innovation at the bottom, companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook (1 in a million?) etc will never happen and you'll never enjoy taxing them as local entities. You reap what you sow? Bleating about bad policy later isn't going to help. The countries in question still get to collect and pay sales tax and provide employment taxes to the local government / countries in question. Another countries innovations shouldn't be the source of funding for your local, expensive, policies.3 points -

Brony and 2 others reacted to dead.cell for a topic
So lot of diverse opinions... let's try to find common ground here though. 1. Climate change is a thing, but alarmist predictions are a work of fiction. 2. The plans to help curb climate change suck. We need better solutions! Also, just because someone sees major problems with these plans does NOT make them a denier. It means they care about how our money is spent, which is also something we should be thinking about, especially if you're American where our debt is ever increasing. 3. We need healthy attitudes and action taken, like the recent push to plant millions of trees. Will it change the world by a huge degree? No! But these efforts are voluntary and make for great PR for anyone partaking. We need more action like this. 4. The end result is inevitable. This is something people also need to recognize. We're not going to stop it, but many people act like we are. That means we need to properly plan not only to reduce emissions, but consider the impact of housing and development to ensure homes aren't built like death traps during major storms (here and abroad), and that maybe we take a good look at development along our coasts going forward. Number 4 is especially important to me, as someone who had water come into their home during Harvey. Where we live currently is important, and worrying about plastic straws will not make any noticeable impact on our community, compared to proper city planning.3 points -

France tells the U.S. it will retaliate over any action against its digital tax
Liquid55 and one other reacted to George P for a topic
US companies operating in other countries are under that countries laws, regulations, etc. The US company has the option to not operate in that market and that country has the consequence of not having that companies goods & services not available to them. Just because the US made a note of looking into this new tax doesn't make it just a US issue. This new tax effects any company from any country. The thing is, they say not to retaliate with tariff, but if you look at it, this new "digital sales tax" IS a tariff itself, just with a pretty new name. The argument that a company who sells goods in a country should follow that countries rules doesn't apply here. They are following, what France and others have a problem with is that this services they want to tax aren't actual physical goods, they want to tax a company who, for example, offers you a cloud service but the physical data center might be located in the UK or Germany. Why? If you sit and think about it why should they? If the service is located in France, then sure, tax. But when it's not? It's just a tariff with a different name.2 points -

mini-LED is still a transmissive technology, so not exactly like OLED which is emissive. While I do feel like this technology has a lot of potential, it is worth noting that it is still using illumination zones. Yes, 1,000+ zones is much better than the small number we see with normal LED displays, but still far lower than OLED, which essentially has over 8 million zones (every pixel is its own illumination zone)2 points -

Kinda like how democrats often make the argument that tax reduction doesn't get passed onto the customer or employees on the lower end. That being said, there's not much to understand here: people don't like paying taxes. That's by and large what the people of France have been protesting over too, has it not? Personally, I don't see an easy solution for all of this, but something tells me we need to quit trying to solve complex problems with basic solutions in hopes that it just fixes everything. I'm just grateful that governments are looking at trying to solve it because too many big companies are getting away with paying very little taxes which just passes the burden onto everyone else.
