  5. The New Me.

This month marks 11 years since seeing that NASTY overweight Christmas photo of myself and embarking on a personal weight loss journey! After seeing the photo I practically made a V line to Walmart and purchased an exercise bike. When I first told my parents, I bought an exercise bike and that "I'm going to ride it 20 mins every day" their response was typical of anyone hearing that, which was akin to “ok whatever you say”. I ended up riding that bike for 20 mins a day (usually in the morning) for about 1.5 years. I remember riding the bike during almost every episode of “Battle Star Galactica”. Something else I watched while on the bike was an internet show called “Dignation”. It was kind of depressing because for the first week I saw no change ☹. But then slowly but sure the weight slowly dropped. Then around July 5th, 2011 I retired the bike and started walking 3.6 miles every day. I’m proud that I only missed 3 days! 1 for the flu (still walked the next day feeling like crap), 1 for an ice storm and 1 for Christmas. There were times I got home late and would do my 3.6-mile walk at 11pm – 12am. Before losing weight, I had a REALLY BAD eating habit! To give you an idea for how bad it really was, for dinner I would have hot dogs and for supper, I would have a jack’s pizza and for a snack, I would eat a bag of corn chips while watching TV. When I was my heaviest, I remember weighing myself and seeing 220 on the scale and not really caring. (At least not until the photo) My primary goal was 179lb. With all the bike riding and all the walking, the best I could do was 182lbs. Then after listing to a podcast about “Low carb” I gave it a shot. The first week while walking and doing low carb I got to my lowest of 180lbs. It was only a month or so, that I blew past 179 down into the 160’s. Then in 2018, I tried low carb again while helping someone lose weight and dropped into the 150s where I’m currently at today. I’m no longer low carb, but more of what I like to call “Lower carb”. That just means I don’t go out of my way to eat carbs but I don’t totally ignore them either. I was trying to think when the last time I went out solo to a fast food joint that had a drive-through was. My best guess is 2007 (Even then I walked in) If I made losing weight sound effortless and easy, I apologize. If there is one thing you take away from this story, take away this, It's hard, requires dedication and you have to be ready to change your eating lifestyle for the REST OF YOUR LIFE! People who do not wish to change their lifestyle will lose weight, but will more than likely gain it all back. When I'm home I have a salad almost every day for lunch. I weigh myself, Usually, twice a day (Might be a little overkill but it's what works for me) I weigh in the morning when I wake up and at supper. At supper time and depending on what I weigh, the weight will dictate what I will allow myself to eat. I'm very proud that I have been able to keep the weight off for 11 years. (and counting!)

  9. Intel demoes Tiger Lake CPUs based on 10nm+ at CES 2020

Well, to be 'fair', AMD also uses the same naming, as Zen will be 7nm+ long before they move to 5nm. It is also worth pointing out, that the internal designs are not the same, as Intel uses closer and half step spacing techniques. Even the current 14nm processors are already semi 7/10nm because of this design difference and layout. (Think shorter paths based on gate location and spacing, etc.) BTW - Not a fan of Intel, and have always liked AMD better (over 20 years now). When comparing the power consumption and single-thread performance, the math works, as AMD's current 7nm CPUs cannot hit the clock speeds or provide significantly lower power than Intel's 14nm processors, and by default 7nm should be significantly ahead. The good news for AMD, is that their 7nm+ will have a more efficient layout more like Intel is using, and will have another big jump, even though the CPUs are being produced with the same 7nm fabrication process. As software optimization and better compilers that use AMD specific features are used, AMD is positioned to dominate, even without considering the fabrication advantages they have. I do fully agree that it is just weird to Intel so caught off guard. I was truly expecting something big and unknown to appear from them. In the past, Intel has always maintained a several year production ready lead on CPU technology, and it seems like this time they don't have it. This same pattern happened to Intel a couple of other times in the last 25 years, with AMD smacking Intel hard in the 90s thru early 00s and again in the mid/late 00s. In the other periods, Intel always had something unreleased they could bring out, or hold to milk the market and keep 'Moore's Law' alive. Side thoughts... Intel still may have something, and if I was betting it would be a new modular chipset technology allowing users to add CPU cores and multiple GPU technologies easier. With Windows 10's GPU agnostic SMT technologies, and game developers warming to the idea, the ability to keep adding GPUs instead of replacing them, users could have access to a lot of gaming and computing power as new technologies come out. This would also allow users to buy cheaper options and build up performance over time.

The IPCC said we have until 2030 to take actions that will limit warming to 1.5c by 2100. 1.5c cap is what was agreed at the Paris climate talks in 2015. At the current rate, though, we are on target to hit +3.0c by 2100 and if we actually meet current governmental plans then it'll rise by 2.8c by 2100. https://climateactiontracker.o...t-acting-on-climate-crisis/

To all the people that don't believe in climate change... No problem, Ignore that, think about health impacts of pollution instead, is it perfectly fine to be breathing in toxic fumes? In places where you have to pay for health care there is big money to be made from illness, improving air quality would mean massive financial losses in that area. Even if you don't care about climate change why not work towards making the planet a nicer place to live?

  22. Yep, 5Ghz is turned off on my router, it is more annoying than useful, Then you either don't know how to properly set up your system, or you live in some Faraday-cage-like dwelling. My router blankets our entire home and outdoor space with reliable 5GHz signal. Even my wireless security cam on the far end of the home connects well with 5GHz signal which can make for a much better picture quality because of the increased bandwidth over the 2.4GHz signal. The only devices using 2.4GHz at our home are low-bandwidth things like the oven, refrigerator, and garage door opener. i know how to set up a router, and there is really not much else you can do apart from turn on the Wi-fi, it works or it don't. sure I could maybe stick the router in a different place, but that is a pain, 5ghz is just not that great, you need to be pretty close to the router. someone I know uses Wi-fi calling as their phone signal is not that great at home and they use it with a Iphone, I had to turn 5G off on their router because for some reason it stopped Wi-fi calling working ,m unless they was in the house. the old 2.4Ghz system picks up the phone before he gets out of the car. A oven using Wi-fi? oh good grief. does it tell you when your meat is cooked? does the fridge tell you that you are running out of milk? Next thing you will be telling me your microwave uses 2.4G My printers uses 2.4,, the LED printer will be put onto Ethernet soon, I may do that this week to be honest. Most smart devices use 2.4. Again, just because you don't know how to use your system, or purchase a reliable system, doesn't mean 5GHz "is just not that great". For me, it's pretty damn great. I don't need to be "pretty close to the router" for it to work reliably. Our phones also use Wi-Fi Calling when at home, and both our phones connect on the 5GHz signal (we use Google Fi as our phone provider). And yes, the oven and fridge connect to Wi-Fi to add a little convenience. And yes, the oven can tell me if the meat is cooked (if I use the oven probe). But, I can preheat the oven, tell if I've left a burner on, check the status of a timer. And with the fridge, I can see the temp of the fridge and freezer, set the status of "Turbo Cool" mode, check the amount of ice in the bucket, or the status of the water filter. I could also set the oven or fridge into "Sabbath mode" if I were an Orthodox Jew. Technology, when done right, can be very helpful. You can't really blame the technology when it is your own failures holding you back. So because i see problems, you thin I do not know how to use or set up the system, well you are wrong. just because 5Ghz works for you in your space with what you do, don't mean it work for other people. Wi-fi calling works fine on 5Ghz when my mate is inside the house, but the signal is so weak when he pulls into his drive that the phone gets confused and wi-fi calling just fails. so the best option was to at first separate the 5Ghz and 2.4 Ghz, but did not work that well either, so disable 5Ghz did the job and it have not had any effect doing so on his network. The same here with me, getting rid of 5ghz have not had any bad effect, in fact it have been good as my phone now do not try to lock onto a signal that it can only just pick up if I am out in the garden. My mate uses EE for his phone, i use a service called plusnet, whihc is piggy backed off EE, but still owned by BT in the UK. while my phone can use Wi-fi calling, my service provider do not provide it. but then it is a budget provider and most of the time I do not need Wi-fi calling. sorry, I can not stop laughing about a oven connected to the net, i have a gas cooker and i just turn it on and it works, when i am done with it I turn it off, simple as that. the fridge//freezer, is set on one temperature and that is it, the only time I change it slightly is when it starts getting hot in the summer. i think the world is going mad, we rely more and more on technology to do simple things. Yeah ok I have a couple of echo dots and they are connected to some light switches and my heating, but I do not rely on it, it is a gimmick, that is it. sometimes I think it is more of a pain, quicker to switch a light switch on, the smart thermostats i useful for when I am at work, as i sometimes work later than i was going to, so I can stop the heating coming on too early. but again it is a gimmick that can be useful. I heard that you can get smart kettles, why is that needed? You fill a kettle up and turn it on, it is ready in a couple of minutes anyway., seconds if you have a one cup. the whole world will rely too much on technology and it will go pop and people will be walking around like headless chickens because they have no idea what to do, I see what smart phones have done to people, some can not be without them for 5 minutes. Are you sure you do not want your washing machine hooked up to the network as well? i may have to replace my cooker this year wsith a new one, may, but it is just going to be a normal cooker and still gas, electric hobs are awful, all of them, even induction. Sounds more like a bad combination of phone and wi-fi source. Also, it sounds like you just don't understand new technology very well. You mock the use of technology instead of embracing it. My oven/range is gas. Oh, and my clothes washer and dryer are both connected to Wi-Fi (2.4GHz). It is handy to alert me when they're finished their cycle. All of our lighting is connected (using Zigbee and Z-Wave, not Wi-Fi), as well as our heating/cooling system, and the vacuuming robot. The great thing about it is that for the most part we don't have to interact with the house at all, everything just works and does what it is supposed to do without any input from us. However, if we do want a particular light on, or to check the status of the oven timer or the clothes washer, all we have to do is ask Google (we have several Google Home/Nest mini). Technology isn't a gimmick, it is a useful tool when used correctly. I’ve maintained that view for quite a long time (he doesn’t understand new technology therefore thinks it’s bad).

If i went and stopped paying tax, I would end up in clink and made bankrupt, so time to sort out the tax system and got people who should be paying to pay it. the thing is our goverment is full of rich people and we must not harm rich people, we most protect them. All so much bull crap. Micheal Mann one of the originators of climate hysteria and the carbon myth lost his slip case in the Canadian Supreme Court. Michael Mann refused to turn over the data behind the storied graph, insisting on secrecy instead of transparency. The court decision reportedly stemmed from the fact that Michael Mann refused to turn over “R2 regression numbers” to the court, which would have revealed the data manipulations that led to the rigging of the hockey stick graph. Stein called him a phoney along with his fabricated climate hockey stick graph. If you're going to sue someone and then not provide the data set it is almost certain you are lying or you're a moron, Occam says so. Believe what you will but the first case fought in court came out decidedly against the liars and fruit cakes who just want your money because they can never have enough.

  39. mini-LED is still a transmissive technology, so not exactly like OLED which is emissive. While I do feel like this technology has a lot of potential, it is worth noting that it is still using illumination zones. Yes, 1,000+ zones is much better than the small number we see with normal LED displays, but still far lower than OLED, which essentially has over 8 million zones (every pixel is its own illumination zone)

But that won't matter anyway: we're too small and Earth is too sparsely populated to blame humans on anything. One crazy solar flare and we're back to the dark ages. One supernova too close, we're toasted. A stray asteroid hit us, goodbye. A surprise gamma ray burst, so long! We're absolute nothing in the cosmological scale. Be thankful for being alive, just that.

  49. PCIe 3.0 could be crippling AMD's RX 5500 XT performance

Kind of missing the point, this card is ONLY using 8 lanes, and is saturating; why isn't it using the 16 lanes provided? Back to your comment, it does demonstrate the limitations of 8 lane PCIe 3.0 speeds in generational context, and PCIe 4.0 is needed. Artificial limitations. I know that my RX 460 for example only has half the pins, so can only work on 8x
