Here's what ports are on the back of the Xbox Series X
Tarrant64 reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
Just curious, but a port for power adapter wouldn't necessarily imply that the power supply itself is internal or external - right? It's just a port where you would plug in your power. Doesn't specify anything more than that really. I guess maybe if they used the word power "cable", but I hear that used interchangeably with adapter.. I think "adapter" means it would do the conversion from AC to DC, like an AC adapter, instead of just a "power cord". I never heard anyone call a cable an "adapter." Like USB cable vs USB adapter. If you search for PS4 power adapter the results just show power cord and don't mention "adapter". I guess we'll see. I hope there isn't another big heavy brick with a light on it or even it's own fan. It's getting more complex every generation. I hope if there's a HDMI in they support 8k input if it's supposed to output 8k, the One X only does 1080p even though many devices output 4k. And hopefully the input looks exactly like the source. Otherwise why even have it? I don't follow your assumption. The XBox One S and XBox One X have internal power adapters. I also think, if Microsoft needs more cooling/space in the new XBox for performance, then they SHOULD make the adapter external. It isn't a big deal compared to compromising the device's performance.1 point -
Macbook Pro Worth it with macOS?
fusi0n reacted to adrynalyne for a topic
I’d say your cons outweigh your pros, and if you want to be running DBs and VMs, that price you are concerned about is going to become more concerning as you cannot upgrade the machine after the fact with more disk space and RAM. I’d also be interested in hearing about the difficulties with Windows. The only one I ran into was RN tooling works better in macOS. At the end of the day, the OS isn’t as important as some make it to be because you are using applications to do whatever. The OS is just the delivery system to allow you to do so. Unless the OS is unstable or stops you from doing your desired task, or another OS makes a notable difference in it, it doesn’t matter if it is Windows or whatever. Your #1 con can be fixed by waiting. AFAIK there are no newer than 9th gen H processors out in the wild yet. Your #3 Pro isn’t. So many people think that, but the reality is that macOS applications also tend to spit out files and settings in multiple places, so just removing it from Applications doesn’t get rid of all of it. Some applications even come with uninstallers. Your #2 con is only a con because you are comparing gaming and media consumption laptops with a laptop that is not designed explicitly for that purpose. The MBP display is fantastic even without HDR with a very bright display. Your #5 con is bigger than you think; the 5500m is pretty meh for games. This coming from someone who has an MBP 16. I have a strong use case for it though and that’s why I have one: I need tools not available in Windows.1 point -
Macbook Pro Worth it with macOS?
+Zlip792 reacted to ZakO for a topic
The only really important part is: What tools, why are they difficult to install on Windows? If they're exclusively for MacOS then the answer is a MacBook Pro is indeed worth it for you. I used a MacBook Pro for 4-5 years for the similar tasks as you (data analytics, frontend development, backend development, devops, database work, etc) because there were certain tools that were annoying to configure on Windows, but when WSL was released (and with WSL2 coming that fixes the few issues with WSL) that problem became pretty much a non issue. I switched back to Windows 10 earlier last year and in combination with WSL I don't really find myself missing anything from MacOS. There's very few things you actually need a Mac for these days, it's mainly down to personal preference.1 point -

Type-C connector isn't important where space isn't a concern, and Type-A doesn't fall apart like Micro-B does. Type-C on the controller should be considered mandatory though. For performance, the only real gain would be with Thunderbolt for SSD storage expansion. Its absence could be either from a lack of available spare PCIe lanes, or from security concerns with exposing DMA. It was just last year that Kernel DMA protection came to Win10/Intel systems and in a games console, a lot more than the kernel would need such protection (ie: prevent Thunderbolt from being used to implement a modern GameShark). I'd expect that being a custom design they could ensure DMA could be supported without compromise, but would understand reticence and challenges in exposing such functionality. I'd also expect the storage to be fully soldered as a result of this too. SATA is a relatively tame protocol compared to NVMe. Extensive IOMMU shenanigans is required to bring it under safe control, and Windows just isn't fully built for that yet (even though Zen 2 most certainly is). The security angle is something everyone should be aware of, and if anyone works with deployment/IT/etc - keeping these ports restricted is really important, just as it has always been with DMA level interfaces. I could see Microsoft implementing a failsafe technology, though this would make it worthless/restrictive, or just avoid Thunderbolt all outright. This is also something I have been curious about, as I could see Sony selling the PS5 to users based on it having Thunderbolt, and then have the entire platform hacked and emulation easily running on PCs and probably even the XBox itself. (I mean, Microsoft was offering full online resell, trade, and sharing of digital and physical games, and a few other cool features for the XBox One, and yet Sony conned gamers and consumers into seeing it as evil DRM crap, with insane online requirements. All while every PS4 uses the same level and type of DRM, especially with their online content, and now has similar online requirements for content, more invasive that what Windows 10 Store or XBox use for digital games. Yay, people fought the good fight, and got fewer features, less technology, and the same restrictions...) -Couldn't resist the rant. PS DMA and Direct Access attacks have been around for a long time, 25 years or so, with Thunderbolt being the newest external connector to be targeted. (Fireware, Thunderbolt, PCIe/PCI, CardBus, etc.) -I also remember ISA being used as an entry point for this type of attack, and 'access' back in the day. These types of attacks have also been a major problem in every major OS. Even with the Thunderbolt 3 specific DMA kernel features added in 1803, it is still not truly secure on any OS. Thunderbolt specifically is STILL a major problem with regard to security, but like most consumers today carrying Android devices and shoving tons of monitoring devices in their home, a DMA PCI external port on their Mac/PC is something they just won't care about. Direct external access is dangerous, as many of these technologies depend on the light security/overhead to achieve the speeds they do. Physical capping is need on highly secure devices. This is also why Thunderbolt, unlike USB, should be physically secured/blocked from general/public access. Even deploying a laptop to employees, this port should come with a lock requiring them to physical enable it while in use, and disabled when not. Physical access to a Thunderbolt port means any PC/Phone/Device is not secured.1 point -

I'm actually in the process of making a Mac my full-time machine. I've been using Windows for about 25 years and Linux 19 or so. About eight months ago, I switched EVERYTHING in my house to Linux. My entire homelab that was running Windows Servers, AD, ADFS, ect and switched to Linux counterparts. My gaming machine that's in my sig, just Linux. I have also been using Macs for about 10 years, but my "main" box has always been Windows or Linux. Present Day, I got tired of using my computer in the basement and wanted something I can use as my main box upstairs and where ever. I got tired of having multiple boxes. I decided to get the new Macbook Pro 16" and I'm really glad I did. Everything that I LOVE about MacOS, is just 100 times better on this box. I use a newish Macbook Pro at work and works great, but I've only really used an older Mac Pro (2008 hacked to run El Capitan) and a 2012 Macbook Pro. I have never really 100% committed to Mac in my personal life until now. Things I do, Code - WIth the terminal right at your finger tips, this is so much easier. One of the reasons why I wanted one for work as well. You can easily use git, and brew is an amazing tool to pull down apps you need. Think of brew like a repo like with Linux, but just for MacOS. You also can use Visual Studio Code, which is one of Microsoft's best products IMO. But, I just a lot of JetBrain's tools for IDEs and such. Tons of Linux administration Browse the Web Music creation and Editing Photo Editing Web Dev as well, mostly wordpress VMs I do wish gaming was a bit better on the Mac.. Not that it isn't bad, but there just isn't that much for it. However, with cloud gaming coming along, I don't think this will be a big issue. I however started playing more of my consoles and it's just an easier experience. I wouldn't get tied up in the specs so much with Macs. The experience of stuff just working and just much easier in general is what you are getting. So many apps now for MacOS as well, something that has really upticked in the last few years and I think that's why I'm really able to commit to it now. Also, I know this isn't one of the things you listed, but just check out the speakers on the new 16" Pro.. It's insane how they did it.. Not sure if this helps you, if you have any questions or something specific, let me know and I'd love to help. Also, if you have a Best Buy in your area, you can get it from there and you can just return it in 14 days, however I don't think that'll be the case. Edit: I'd like to also add that console streaming works great on MacOS as well.1 point -

Apple shows off the iPhone 11 Pro's videography capturing the extremes of ice and fire
mip reacted to sphbecker for a topic
Just because an iPhone can take decent pictures or videos doesn't mean it is the only thing anyone needs. There is a lot you get from a high-end camera that simply doesn't exist on any smart phone. If you don't understand those features or why you need them, that is fine, those products are not for you, enjoy your smartphone. For professional users who want/need more, don't act like they are crazy for choosing the products that work best for them. I bought a prosumer DSLR camera over a decade ago (it was a Canon 40D). I got a few lenses with it too, all-in-all I spent about $2,500. Even being as old of technology as it is, it still can do a bunch of things an iPhone 11 can't today. In fact, the only thing an iPhone has over my old camera is superior processing, which I can easily match and surpass by shooting RAW and using software to process. Having said that, I find that I hardly ever get it out anymore just do to the connivance of a smartphone and the "good enough" effect. Don't forget that quality alone is not the only thing that matters. Even if an iPhone was the exact same quality as professional gear (it isn't), there would still be a ton of things about the iPhone that make it much harder to work with in a professional setting. If I was taking pictures that really mattered, I would probably still get the 12+ year old 40D out. The precision and control I get from it just can't be matched by a phone. If my job was taking pictures, then I would probably invest in an upgrade. As it stands, I simply don't shoot enough to make an investment like that worth while. As my DSLR ages, I will sadly use it less and less. All those manual/pro mode features sound like a hobby to me. There's no accounting for taste. And of course sometimes it's better to ride a horse than driving a Tesla, depends on the terrain. Wow, you are so wrong, but thats okay, you are clearly not a photographer. As I already said in the post it sounds like you didn't read (because I already addressed everything you said), those products are not meant for you. Tesla vs House is an awful analogy. A DSLR camera has MORE photo technology behind it than a phone's camera, not less. I think a more accurate analogy is a Chrome Book vs a high-end workstation. Sure, the Chrome book does what most people need just fine, and due to its size, might actually be better for many, but the more you push what the system can do, the more you will need the higher-end features. All of my photographer friends are impressed by iPhone's camera, and recently I see people don't hire photographers anymore for even wedding photos, they take impressive photos with their iPhones already. Question is, do we really need photographers anymore? Phones have got AI cameras nowadays. About videos, almost the same. I think it's like, laborer aren't happy with robots as they know robots will replace them soon. Just like professionals with their fancy cameras, are stubborn to accept the future. Maybe it's not right now yet but in the near future, things will change seriously. To each there own. I am a big fan of using the right tool for the job. An iPhone may be able to take good pictures, but it isn't the right tool for something like a wedding. Not if you want to get close-ups, action shots and the kind of things people tend to expect. Could you imagine the pictures you would get if on the sidelines of an NFL game you just had people holding iPhones? There wouldn't be a single picture worth printing, just a bunch of wide-angle shots of the field.1 point -

Usually the title alone and an inflammatory image are enough to impact a persons perception of whatever the topic is about, even if they don't read it. It's continually enforced in this circle and vicous cycle. And if it's been shared 50,000 times, must be true right? Except it's not just Aunt Sally or Uncle Bob. There are plenty of young idiots on Facebook just the same who can't even distinguish a continent from a country, but want to give you their opinions of foreign policy. Now we got to deal with kids promoting communism, which is no better than Aunt Sally telling you about these magical herbs that cure Lupus or Uncle Bob goin on about the moon landing being faked. Intel demoes Tiger Lake CPUs based on 10nm+ at CES 2020
DarkyDan reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
Well, to be 'fair', AMD also uses the same naming, as Zen will be 7nm+ long before they move to 5nm. It is also worth pointing out, that the internal designs are not the same, as Intel uses closer and half step spacing techniques. Even the current 14nm processors are already semi 7/10nm because of this design difference and layout. (Think shorter paths based on gate location and spacing, etc.) BTW - Not a fan of Intel, and have always liked AMD better (over 20 years now). When comparing the power consumption and single-thread performance, the math works, as AMD's current 7nm CPUs cannot hit the clock speeds or provide significantly lower power than Intel's 14nm processors, and by default 7nm should be significantly ahead. The good news for AMD, is that their 7nm+ will have a more efficient layout more like Intel is using, and will have another big jump, even though the CPUs are being produced with the same 7nm fabrication process. As software optimization and better compilers that use AMD specific features are used, AMD is positioned to dominate, even without considering the fabrication advantages they have. I do fully agree that it is just weird to Intel so caught off guard. I was truly expecting something big and unknown to appear from them. In the past, Intel has always maintained a several year production ready lead on CPU technology, and it seems like this time they don't have it. This same pattern happened to Intel a couple of other times in the last 25 years, with AMD smacking Intel hard in the 90s thru early 00s and again in the mid/late 00s. In the other periods, Intel always had something unreleased they could bring out, or hold to milk the market and keep 'Moore's Law' alive. Side thoughts... Intel still may have something, and if I was betting it would be a new modular chipset technology allowing users to add CPU cores and multiple GPU technologies easier. With Windows 10's GPU agnostic SMT technologies, and game developers warming to the idea, the ability to keep adding GPUs instead of replacing them, users could have access to a lot of gaming and computing power as new technologies come out. This would also allow users to buy cheaper options and build up performance over time.1 point -
