The store should be a place to find software that works for your device. It helps too that Microsoft has checked it for security. Whether it's UWP or what ever shouldn't matter, first you need to get stuff in the store and worry about that later. The real issue is they aren't hosting the apps we want. Adobe (I wish they used the store and auto updates....so annoying)? Office? Microsoft Teams? Microsoft Planner? Microsoft SharePoint? Handbrake? Visual studio? SourceTree? browsers? Joinme or Zoom or WebX? Google Apps? etc. The issue has nothing to do with desktop users not using apps, we use lots of apps. It's those apps not existing in the store. The process can be debated of how to get those apps in the store, but if you went to Zoom's website and clicked download and it opened the store and started installing and if that happened for pretty much every where you downloaded software....you'd use the store. And if the search in the store was half decent, you'd probably stop going to the web to look for software, and check the store first. But Microsoft doesn't even do this for their own apps. Right now if I buy Office 365 from the store, it sends me to a browsers to download it. That's got to be a joke! If the store dies, it's because the sections of Microsoft that aren't Windows won't support it.3 points -

Actually the carriers do not. The OEMs do it on behalf of the carriers. So the carriers decided it and required it, not the OEMs who only carried out an order? Woosh, you sure did miss my point. Too many people out there think carriers have the ability to edit phone roms themselves when they do not and never have. That is true, however from my experience in cellular at work I can tell you 1 carrier I know of has access to all it's devices and can run any command on them, it is a requirement for that specific carrier to allow devices on their network. There might be others but I've not interacted with them.2 points -

Of course. Windows 10 is a complete failure. What garbage Store is that it fails at very basic, to choose in what folder you want to install app and the amount of file/folder/registry garbage UWP creates is staggering, compared to Steam games where it keeps everything under on folder, with optional shortcuts and next to no registry keys.2 points -

So you're telling me they actually learned NOTHING from current-gen? Bravo. Both consoles provide pretty much the same perf and exp, so Spencer, PLEASE tell me how I'm gonna make the decision to pick one? YES, based on exclusives! It's not that hard, dude! The only exclusive I needed this gen is TLOU, so naturally, I went PS4. If MS had a tempting enough exclusive, I'd have gotten an Xbox too. But they didn't, so I didn't. That's it, end of story. If what you mean is for it to work as the program stores on Linux distros, that would actually be useful - a one big hub, from which users can install the programs they want and keep them updated or even opt in for beta versions... Or maybe even add something like their own repositories for even more programs... That's one of the few things that has improved on Linux since I first started messing with it around 2008 - it really made it simple to install software, provided your hardware is compatible enough with Linux and it found you semi-proper drivers so you can sort of make 25% use of your GPU and whatnot. The current Store app on Windows 10 feels like Microsoft wanted to copy Mac OS' app store for all I can see... or maybe Google Play too. Except that those two actually make sense and are useful.1 point -

what they could do is not mess up design they had with R7, where keyboard was at the bottom and trackpad on the top. if you want screen completely flat though, you will need external controls either way. for me gamepad worked really well with various macros mapped to controls reachable with one hand, and to extend tool set I've used one of the buttons as 'shift' to alter other buttons mappings. so basically holding gamepad with one hand and drawing/retouching with pen in another.1 point -

"she doesn't play graphically intense games she's only 4" Maybe VMware? Check it... Install VMware Workstation Player (which is free for home use) Install a copy of Windows Install WMware Tools after Windows is installed/loaded Install Steam Install the game .. and pray. If the game isn't resource intensive you should be alright. I just tested with the game "Inside" and it was fine. With VMware you can connect (capture) the game controller which disconnects it from the Host (so it doesn't interfere). You can also do this with a secondary mouse/keyboard so they'll stay within the VM. The Host keyboard/mouse wouldn't mess with the VM either (unless you click within the VM) Just a thought. Might not be the most elegant solution ... but it'll probably work for a 4-year old playing simple games. Clear as mud?1 point -

Microsoft is reportedly killing off the Microsoft Store for Business and Education
RandPC reacted to dead.cell for a topic
Real talk: I wish there was just a switch where if PC joins a domain, certain functionality is disabled: junkware games, MS Store nagging, etc. It should simply be understood that a user is probably not going to have a Microsoft account to sign into the MS Store with to be downloading junk. The only application we use out of there for example is Sonicwall to setup SSL-VPN, which shouldn't require me saying No Thanks or knowing to close out the Sign In window when trying to install it. They relaxed a bit on their Windows 10 installations requiring you to sign in, which previously required you to keep the PC off the network just to get around it... Like... Microsoft, it's not that we don't love ya, but you're smothering us and wasting our time! I don't need to hear Cortana whenever I start a new PC setup either...1 point -

Type-C connector isn't important where space isn't a concern, and Type-A doesn't fall apart like Micro-B does. Type-C on the controller should be considered mandatory though. For performance, the only real gain would be with Thunderbolt for SSD storage expansion. Its absence could be either from a lack of available spare PCIe lanes, or from security concerns with exposing DMA. It was just last year that Kernel DMA protection came to Win10/Intel systems and in a games console, a lot more than the kernel would need such protection (ie: prevent Thunderbolt from being used to implement a modern GameShark). I'd expect that being a custom design they could ensure DMA could be supported without compromise, but would understand reticence and challenges in exposing such functionality. I'd also expect the storage to be fully soldered as a result of this too. SATA is a relatively tame protocol compared to NVMe. Extensive IOMMU shenanigans is required to bring it under safe control, and Windows just isn't fully built for that yet (even though Zen 2 most certainly is). The security angle is something everyone should be aware of, and if anyone works with deployment/IT/etc - keeping these ports restricted is really important, just as it has always been with DMA level interfaces. I could see Microsoft implementing a failsafe technology, though this would make it worthless/restrictive, or just avoid Thunderbolt all outright. This is also something I have been curious about, as I could see Sony selling the PS5 to users based on it having Thunderbolt, and then have the entire platform hacked and emulation easily running on PCs and probably even the XBox itself. (I mean, Microsoft was offering full online resell, trade, and sharing of digital and physical games, and a few other cool features for the XBox One, and yet Sony conned gamers and consumers into seeing it as evil DRM crap, with insane online requirements. All while every PS4 uses the same level and type of DRM, especially with their online content, and now has similar online requirements for content, more invasive that what Windows 10 Store or XBox use for digital games. Yay, people fought the good fight, and got fewer features, less technology, and the same restrictions...) -Couldn't resist the rant. PS DMA and Direct Access attacks have been around for a long time, 25 years or so, with Thunderbolt being the newest external connector to be targeted. (Fireware, Thunderbolt, PCIe/PCI, CardBus, etc.) -I also remember ISA being used as an entry point for this type of attack, and 'access' back in the day. These types of attacks have also been a major problem in every major OS. Even with the Thunderbolt 3 specific DMA kernel features added in 1803, it is still not truly secure on any OS. Thunderbolt specifically is STILL a major problem with regard to security, but like most consumers today carrying Android devices and shoving tons of monitoring devices in their home, a DMA PCI external port on their Mac/PC is something they just won't care about. Direct external access is dangerous, as many of these technologies depend on the light security/overhead to achieve the speeds they do. Physical capping is need on highly secure devices. This is also why Thunderbolt, unlike USB, should be physically secured/blocked from general/public access. Even deploying a laptop to employees, this port should come with a lock requiring them to physical enable it while in use, and disabled when not. Physical access to a Thunderbolt port means any PC/Phone/Device is not secured.1 point -
