  1. Windows 7 is no longer supported beginning today

I quite liked Windows XP and used it for years, Windows 7 just felt like a breath of fresh air and I dont think it was ever really surpassed by Windows 8 and 8.1.

  2. So they're finally implementing power plans, like Windows has had for almost 20 years?

  3. Windows 7 has had a good run but it's time to put it to rest. It's over 10 years old now. Windows 10 is a completely viable OS even if you don't personally like it.

have fun slowly becoming less and less secure on that machine as the paid extended support is only offered to businesses I believe.

  6. really wish our country wasn't run by paranoia. The US NEVER provided any actual proof to their claims that Huawei will act maliciously. Hopefully the UK ignores our government's pitiful whining. We really need to get the baby that is Trump out of our office. He's giving this country a worse name/reputation than it already has.

  7. Comcast's insisting on an upgrade.

So your renting their equipment.. And they want to upgrade your device... Then have them come out and do it.. I am unclear on the issue here? I personally hate all in one devices.. And for $12 a month in a year or so you would pay for your own equipment for sure... Even with buying a kick ass modem and router.. 2 Different devices..

  8. Wait, what? Macs don’t have power plans?? Power management is automatic and you don't need to micro-manage it like in Windows. You can still adjust things that makes sense as a user. Not that you don't need, you can't

  9. The latest Kindle Paperwhite is up to $50 off on Amazon

For reading, there is nothing like e-ink. Not even the comparision of mobile phone's LCD screen. Unless you expected color and/ or reading like it was a webpage or a huge monitor, eink is like reading a book. Very different technologies. E-ink is designed to avoid eye strain, at least reduce it by a large margin. I don't have that many PDF on my machine, most were bought from Kindle store.

  13. Dopamine

Yes indeed: 3.0 is the multi platform rewrite. Supported on Windows and Linux. Theoretically also on Mac. Although someone else would have to build and test it (as I don't own a Mac). I'm interested too. I haven't done all the research yet. But seeing as web technologies have a lot of multi-media capabilities, I see a promising future for Dopamine. With version 2.0 out of the way, development on 3.0 should get a boost. Edit: Dopamine code and issues were moved to https://github.com/digimezzo/dopamine-windows This is the Dopamine 3.0 GitHub: https://github.com/digimezzo/dopamine For all feature requests, please log an issue over there. I don't always guess right how people like to listen to their music. So if anyone has suggestions, don't hesitate to create issues via GitHub.

  15. Windows 10 Mobile is dead ... again

Still think they should have focused on "Windows Phone 7" or at least never released 7 and jumped straight to 8. you prefer windows phone 7? No, tbh I never used anything past 6.5. The issue is they recreated windows mobile/WinCE for Windows Phone 7, so people developed apps based on that, adapting with the new interface and such, then microsoft dropped the whole platform, recreating WP8 off of WinNT instead of WinCE.

  16. Windows 7 is no longer supported beginning today

it's more for the age of the hardware on some windows 7 machines; some are up to a decade old as mentioned and may not support some of the nicer or required feature sets in 10 If your hardware is that old then sure, I'd be looking to change the whole system. But at the same time there seem to be plenty of mentions of Windows 10 running well, if not better, on limited hardware compared to Windows 7. I was just thinking out loud. At the end of the day I don't mind what the reasoning is for the suggestion, so long as people finally get off their butts and move to something better...or at least, more secure. Still no excuse to throw out old computers! Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon runs decently on my Thinkpad X61s (although it gets a bit hot, I'm not sure if the fan is doing its job properly!), and my Sony Vaio from around 2006/2007. Granted they're a bit slow by today's standards but not bad for some light tasks; I wrote a fair few articles for Neowin on the Thinkpad in 2017

  21. The question is not if issues are found. The question is if you get a fix for it, when it's found.

  22. nothing is ever secure software wise, get over this MS bias... it doesn't mater what it is, eventually someone will find a flaw in the design... even going way down low to basic stdio.h calls in C++ have had flaws which affected basically every piece of software written in C++......

  27. But didn't that decrease clock speed in half, for backward compatibility? Yes... that was the idea. It was to slow down your blazing 486 to play a game written for a 386. And it worked! I remember some games going crazy in Turbo Mode... but I'd press the button and all was well. Mine had a LED number display that showed the switch from 25 to 33 Mhz. WoooHoooo!

  32. Nope, leave it for Linux Mint Xfce, as suggested in article. Why do they say Windows 7 is dead after tomorrow? Tomorrow is patch Tuesday, which Windows 7 will receive, so sort of technically, it's still good for another month.

ESUs bring me much comfort. i get warm fuzzy feeling that Windows 7 is not only used out there by businesses and users but will be supported, even if only to a relative few number until 2023. but... voting machines running Windows 7 in the u.s. also receive updates until the 2020 elections are over! 37. So does Britain and Germany for that matter, with Germany sniffing through any traffic that comes through Frankfurt to fight terrorism. That's the big problem, isn't it? You say terrorism and you get a free pass to do what you want, whether it's the Patriot Act in the US or abroad. Yep, it's like a 'hide the sausage party' and there's no lube... or sausage, it's a camera and microphone and we're all f'cked.

  40. 108m customers huh? How many of those "customers" are just accounts that were created to claim free games? How many of them actually spent money on the store? How many were fortnite accounts before EGS was a thing? And how many were created for people who were completely unaware of that fact? That 108 million is extremely misleading to say the least. And it's nice to see that they can't be bothered to talk about how they plan to improve their store. Nope... just more freebies to lure suckers in and exclusives to take away choice.

  41. This focuses on 0-6 hour forecasts, which, and hear me out, are pretty crap. You get a good idea of that timeframe by looking at the clouds outside the window generally. The actually hard side of weather prediction is days in advance, e.g. the met office's 7 day prediction which is generally wrong all the time, but of course they didn't test their system on that did they because it would have likely flat out failed harder than Michael Fish... Maybe that's part of the AI. They have webcams looking outside at one of those weather stones. https://i.imgur.com/gj03CjH.jpg

you can look on your amazon account for the device email and email PDFs to it; super easy that way https://www.amazon.com/gp/sendtokindle/email edit: one of the main advantages to kindles is their e-ink displays; no glare in the sun if trying to view outside.

  47. This is nonsense. It's getting patches tomorrow, for the last time though. Tomorrow will be no different from any other time, except that the risk will get higher over time because there will be no more patches after tomorrow. So in reality, the risk will be higher than any other time after February's 2nd Tuesday of the month (when patches that would normally be delivered to Windows 7 won't be).
