  1. People who want a browser that syncs to their Microsoft account instead of a Google account?

  2. I wonder why they don't just make a setting to display or remove the update notification? I don't care for the notification myself, but I can understand others wanting to know.

  9. Windows 7 is no longer supported beginning today

No software is ever secured. After all as Windows 10 gets more of market share it will be more prone to security problems than Windows 7 because it will be a primary target of attacks. I just wonder how long will take for 500 million of people running Windows 7 to upgrade to something else. Microsoft might just lose those 500 million people to Linux and Mac OS. Hahahahahahahahahaha nope

  17. Hehe "most users swipe away" ... I bet actually most users don't touch the notification one way or the other and just leave it sitting there forever. Based on phones I've seen with long lists of icons along the top that I could never live with myself! But they seem to...

  18. Some people like the extra info, so I agree that it should at least be a option in the play store app, either on or off. You might like to know if you already have the newest version of a app, maybe you read about it online that day for example. Without a notification telling you it's been updated say yesterday, you'd have to check in the play store app, or check said app itself. Likewise maybe you don't want to upgrade to the newest version of a app, for whatever reason. I also wish you could tell the system to stop updates for specific apps.

  21. Windows 7 is no longer supported beginning today

Cause it works good. While I appreciate the mentality of, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" it doesn't really apply in this situation. As of today (or a week from now given patch Tuesday) the OS is officially broke, or at least it will start breaking down. I get the love for Windows 7, but run it in a VM if you need compatibility for applications, and make sure that the VM is away from the Internet. We're basically looking at an IT case of the anti-vaxxers. You might want to take the risk by not moving on, but you are potentially threatening other people by not doing so. That's my take on it, anyway.

I quite liked Windows XP and used it for years, Windows 7 just felt like a breath of fresh air and I dont think it was ever really surpassed by Windows 8 and 8.1.

  25. What about all the "enhanced security" that has been constantly touted as a big reason to abandon Windows-7 and move to WIndows-10?? It's "mitigation" and "prevention", not the cure (i.e. 100% perfect code, which isn't possible). Same reason why we have locks on doors, better locks on doors, and "secure locks for Fort Knox" locks on doors which can all be backed up by other security to ensure that people don't even get near the lock in the first place. Don’t try to explain it. He doesn’t have the ability to comprehend it.

  26. What about all the "enhanced security" that has been constantly touted as a big reason to abandon Windows-7 and move to WIndows-10?? Every OS gets security patches to fix security issues. Every one. Your comment is pointless anyway, this also affects Windows 7.

  28. Here's how Microsoft will roll out the new Edge browser

The same reason Chrome mirrors Chromium.

  29. The point isn't for it to have a big future. The point is for MS to still be able to include a MS branded browser with Windows while getting away from the huge cost of maintaining their own engine that no one uses. Think of it this way, if you have a browser that 10% of people are going to use, max, do you want to pay $1 million a year to maintain it, or $20 a year to maintain it? Being based on Chromium massively lowers the costs. (those number are not factual, for illustration purposes only). Also, I can see businesses actually liking it because of the IE mode. I know that a lot of Helpdesk calls get generated just because the user tried to use the wrong browser on some legacy app that requires IE. Assuming the auto-selection works well, that could make Edge the one-stop way for a user to get the best of both.

  31. Bank issue with Chrome

Do you know someone else that uses your bank for online banking? Can you check with them if they are able to log in with Chrome? My original assumption is that the bank no longer supports Chrome, or they use something that Chrome doesn't support. But if you can get someone else to log in it would offer the idea that the issue lies with your account somehow. I don't think that's the case though, it would be strange that they let you log in with a different browser... When you try using Chrome, you're using the standard version right? You didn't install any extensions after the reinstall?

  32. None of my phones have ever updated automatically although they always say updates are set to do so. They do check for updates automatically, but never install them unless I tell it to. Wouldn't want it to install them that way anyway so haven't really ever pursued it.

  33. Windows 7 is no longer supported beginning today

I'd say it was the best OS by MS, so far. XP and 2000 weren't far behind though. Yeah, given Windows 7 is the most recent OS prior to the current main one that people praised, it seems many like it a lot. sort of like how WindowsXP used to be but Win7 has overtaken it. as far as Windows 10... I think Microsoft should slow down releases and focus on doing one release a year as this way they can spend more time polishing it and not only that they could support it for say 24 months instead of the 18 months like things are currently with the two releases each year etc. but anyways... Win2k was good but it was never marketed to the average person even though it could be used by the average person (it's the first Microsoft OS that was stable as prior to that using Winv3.11/Win95/Win98/WinME, while they worked okay enough, you could see there was a large stability increase once you reached Win2k. although in terms of OS's for the common person, WinXP (especially by SP1) that was really stable from Microsoft. so basically I am saying WinXP is the first really stable OS from Microsoft for the average person as prior to that one had to generally reboot their computers much more often). but looking at OS's prior to Windows 10... there are really only two that stand out... Windows XP/Windows 7. but like I have said before Microsoft seems to have a general pattern from Win98 to date... Win98(good),WinME(bad),WinXP(good),WinVista(bad),Win7(good),Win8(bad),Win10(good). I know some dis Windows 10, but it's largely accepted and as long as your hardware works with it, it's typically solid. clearly better than the Win8 disaster as Win8's major problem that got it a bad rep was it's interface was not suited for desktop/laptop users and was more for tablets and the like which is crap. p.s. in fact, Win8 is the only OS I never bothered with as I briefly tried it in a virtual machine but it's interface was a immediate show stopper and at that point it got a bad rep and never recovered from it. because I have used... v3.11/Win95/Win98/WinME/Win2k/WinXP/WinVista/Win7/Win10 at some point or another on my primary computer which is pretty much everything over the last 25 years. FWIW, never once had Windows 8/8.1 on any of my computers either.

  34. Comcast's insisting on an upgrade.

Hello, The ARRIS Touchstone TG862G is a residential broadband gateway and router with an integrated 802.11n wireless access point (2.4GHz only, though) as well as telephony adapter (for two separate phone lines) and four-port Ethernet (10/100/1GbE) switch. This particular model is branded by ARRIS for Xfinity (aka Comcast) and was, as best as I can tell, released in 2015, so it is now about five (5) years old, and is compliant with the DOCSIS 3.0 standard. My best guess is that Comcast must be upgrading the CMTS (cable modem termination system) at their end (aka the "head-end") that your cable modem connects to from DOCSIS 3.0 to DOCSIS 3.1, and is requesting all DOCSIS 3.0 users to upgrade to a modem compliant with the newer standard. The reason for this upgrade is that the technology used in 3.1 to transfer data makes more efficient use of the channels/spectrum on the wire, and having to support the older 3.0 device slows down the throughput of their cable network. Upgrading to a newer modem allows them to provide service to more users at higher speeds, as they no longer have to support the older means of communicating performed by your 3.0 modem. At least, that's my basic understanding of how things work. So, yes, there is a legitimate reason for your cable ISP to ask you to upgrade your modem. The main thing I would suggest is that you make darn sure everything works before the cable technician leaves, including Wi-Fi access as well as your telephone lines. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky

  35. Google Phone app teardown hints at call recording support

I've been using boldbeast since my nexus 4 days and I love it, to the point where I actually buy fones based on the fact if I can or cannot record calls. Given that the fact legally (california) calls cannot be used for legal reasons unless the other party knows, I mostly just use it for my archiving/nostalgic purposes, because who knows when the one time I speak to someone on my fone will be the last time I ever speak to them again.

Still think they should have focused on "Windows Phone 7" or at least never released 7 and jumped straight to 8. windows 10 mobile runs on the same code base as Windows PCs, as you can see windows 10 mobile has same interface as desktop windows 10. Microsoft wanted to focus one platform system. most users dont understand that.

  44. I can't be sure of this because I didn't bother to actually do the math but it comes down to around $7 per account they claim they have. Which is basically nothing. Well, the numbers are there for all to see: https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn....dNYsJtoVLbXLVPB-970-80.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn....sdNYsJtoVLbXLVPB-970-80.jpg But yah... $7 per user per year and the bulk of that is Fortnite players (based on their revenue split)... they're not really doing that great as far as 3rd party sales go It's also interesting (and amusing) to note that the "most popular" games in that graphic are all exclusives. None are third party games that were also sold on other stores. So it looks like when users have a choice they choose to not use epic. Well... most of them are... The Division 2 you can get it (and should) directly on Uplay... The Outer Worlds you can get (and probably shouldn't ) on the Microsoft Store... and the others are timed exclusives, so... when you count up how much they paid for each game for timed exclusivity... that's a TON of additional money, especially for Borderlands 3

  46. Google AI model outperforms traditional methods of weather prediction

"Certain Scenarios" This essentially means the 'good' results are cherry picked or using specific favorable metrics. This isn't confidence inspiring. For example... Anyone could write AI code that could do better, in "Certain Scenarios". Another fun example: Google's AI Draw Bot - AutoDraw. It is horrible, and yet it can do better than a person in "Certain Scenarios". (Check it out for a laugh.)
