WhatsApp struck down with server issues worldwide [Update]
300z and one other reacted to +InsaneNutter for a topic
Outages happen at the end of the day, considering WhatsApp has 5 billion installs on Android alone I think it does alright for itself. Its rare its ever down so I really don’t see the problem. Outside of the US and China WhatsApp is pretty much the dominant messaging app in many countries now. From an encryption point of view however Signal is better than both WhatsApp and iMessage as it’s open & peer reviewed.2 points -

before I get to tower recommendations I'd like to ask, do you have HDDs or SSDs in your current towers? You may be able to solve for the app loading lag in your current towers simply by adding SSDs and reinstalling Windows on them without having to spend for a pricey upgrade SSDs are great at bringing mildly older hardware back to life2 points -
Crew Dragon: In-Flight Abort test flight
sc302 reacted to +rdlenk for a topic
@sc302is referring to the video Doc posted in the OP. That was the pad abort test from 2015. That test is indeed a far more violent experience and would be quite uncomfortable for the occupants, especially since there would be little to no warning that it was going to happen. The large amount of thrashing the capsule does is due to that fact that it is still very much in the atmosphere and can't use its thrusters to stabilize. The idea here though is living is better than not living when trying to escape an explosion on the pad. The In-Flight abort test from Sunday is a much smoother experience. The occupants are already experiencing a lot of acceleration so when the escape system activates it is just a bit more in the same direction. They will certainly feel it but will already be braced since they were already in flight. Some data was reveled at the press conference showing forces never exceeded 3.5g throughout the test with the NASA director even commenting that it was "impressive" to achieve that low of a number in a launch escape. The Soyuz capsule will reach over 6g during its escape which saved two lives in 2018 as Jim points out.1 point -

The flames and the splashdown: Crew Dragon's in-flight abort test, as it happened

The sound barrier is whatever the local speed of sound is, which varies depending on altitude, humidity and rain. Mach technically is the speed of sound, but practically is given a static conversion of 1.0 = 760mph. In that case, it is entirely possible for Mach 1.0 to not be the sound barrier. However, I agree, it is not possible for the sound barrier to be Mach 2.0, you would almost have to be underwater for that to be true. Looks like the article has been edited, but it originally said the capsule produced a sonic boom at Mach 2. Figured I'd post the general comment, but you're right overall.1 point -

The NSA told MS about it and they fixed it so it's all good. The next time there's some bug of this level that also impacts Windows 7 it'll be interesting to see what users who refused to upgrade to 10 will do. Of course there's that "switch to linux" narrative going around but if they don't want to upgrade to a newer version of the same OS you think they'd want to totally change?1 point -

Which I pointed out. i.e. what is the usage of AutoCAD, budget, etc...which isn't entirely clear. If just using for 2D designs ... the RX580 is overkill. If doing advanced 3D modeling, an AutoCAD certified (workstation) GPU would probably be beneficial. However, not enough is known about how this system is used, budget, etc. Anyway, I'm not going to get involved in this little back and forth. It is tiring.1 point -

This stuff isn't free. That's why people don't like it. But if they were sustainable from the start, it would have had very little impact on today's prices. Just like if Governments finally act on doing something about it now, it'll cost more now to act than if they did it 30 years ago. We have been "borrowing" for free the past 30 years, at the cost to the environment. All that we need to do is take the environmental cost into account, which is what being carbon neutral is all about. If we don't we'll be paying a higher price in the future to try and rectify issue we have ignored in the past.1 point -
