  1. now THIS I don't agree with. If a different default search engine is set then no app should be allowed to alter that without user notification or approval/interaction. That's just rude and anti-competitive.

Microsoft just can’t seem to relent on giving me reasons to not ever use windows 10, LOL? They know windows is broken beyond repair and they’re desperate to cash in on anything little thing. Sad and pathetic.

  13. But who said you have to buy new hardware? It's not like Windows 10 doesn't run very well on Windows 7 era hardware, I've got it running just fine on a old i7 920 I built back in 2009. The cost to upgrade the OS would be around the same depending on the type of gov deal MS gives.

  16. I get the push back, and the Office team has always been weird... However, consider if they don't do this... If the users are left with Google Search, when they do a search from Chrome, and expect to see all their intranet information presented in the browser search results, WHICH IS A SPECIFIC feature off Office 365 ProPlus, and they don't get that information, they are going to be angry, especially managers that have paid for and expect this feature to work for all users. I get the disconnect with the IT and management here, but if users can't easily get their information because they or their IT have them on Chrome and using Google search, this creates additional problems. This is also an outcome from the Google dominance and that many IT people and teams do not understand why Bing is a key component of how the localized and intranet results work, OR THEY WOULD NOT BE COMPLAINING on Reddit and other places. Everyone that is complaining, instead of writing a policy or script to adjust this, are PRIME EXAMPLES of why this default setting to Bing is needed. If they understood this or their jobs better, IT IS A NON-ISSUE. So the louder IT people scream, the dumber they are. This isn't traditional end-users getting trampled on by Microsoft, this is the management and companies choosing these features and this product, and Microsoft is ensuring the search results are what they are paying for, or easily changeable by users. If anyone is having a big cow on this, remember in Europe, Google has AUCTIONED off search provider results to be displayed from Android devices, and BING is not even an option in the browser for these users.

  18. "While the OECD may not like it, countries may have to impose their own individual taxes against tech firms" No, while the OECD may not like it, countries have the right to impose their own individual taxes. Where it gets a little more complicated is that for EU a consensus is required from the member states. However, this doesn't apply to all countries in the world, such as Norway, which is free to impose its own tax should it want to even though it is in EEC (but not EU).

  19. Microsoft is testing ads for Office 365 in WordPad

Everyone seems to forget that both Google and Apple do things like this, often far more egregious. Apple has been known to flip up full screen ads for users on older iPhones, to encourage them to 'upgrade'. And Google, "Do you want to use Chrome?" "Do you want to use Google" "Do you want to subscribe Youtube TV? "Do you want us to listen to you sleep too in case we didn't get all your information?" (Really, Microsoft is being compared 'unfavorably' to that crap? FFS) I also find it strange that the author of this article THINKS, this is an attempt to be more 365 subscriptions. However, if that was the goal, why on earth let people know they can use Office on the Web for FREE? The ad could recommend Office 365 home or personal and take them to the Microsoft Store, but it DOESN'T. Statistically, most users DO NOT know that Office is free to use on the Web, just like Google Docs, except faster with more features. People still think Office has a cost, and sadly, it is articles like this slamming Office and Microsoft, while failing to educate readers is the main reason why they don't. This is where tech journalism has failed people, and if Microsoft wants to mention it, IN THEIR OWN SOFTWARE, they should. Also, ads in the OS? WordPad is an old app, that is nothing more than a wrapper for the RTF controls with a couple of quick toolbars. (Something most developers could create in a few hours - seriously.) WordPad is NOT SOME SACRED piece of software or part of the OS. FFS. Also, the difference between using WordPads (1990s) RTF word processing features to the FREE version of Word Online is drastic, and most users would appreciate this bit of information. Especially as Word Online has better document handling and portability, even to NON-Microsoft formats. FFS Finally, did anyone stop to notice, this is a 'test case' and is not released to ANYONE yet?

  23. Microsoft is testing ads for Office 365 in WordPad

The ad is in your face. There's a yellow bar across the top of the screen asking you to use another service. Wordpad isn't meant to be a word replacement, it's basically a low end processor for when you need something more than Notepad (fonts, alignments, bullet points, etc...). It's really not in your face though. It's a small bar; it's not like it's a full screen popup demanding 'USE THIS!!!' If you're really that worried about a few pixels of vertical space then you may need a bigger monitor or one with a better resolution. It's in your face, and it requires user interaction to dismiss as well. My monitor is fine, thank you.

Nah, just all the existing bugs, unknown 0-days and holes that wont be fixed. May not have a secure OS, but least you don't have to see a very tiny unobtrusive ad bar for a free service! My Windows 7 will be updated for 3 more years, so I don't need to worry about that right now. I'm more scared of what Windows 10 is turning into. They did the same nonsense in file explorer with sync provider notifications. I'm also scared people are actually defending this behavior from Microsoft.

  32. €800,000 is a big pile of cash. However, 33,000 units is no small number either. Everything is relative. It probably cost the German Government somewhere in the region of €15 - 33 mil to purchase those PCs. So, spending a relatively small faction of that sum to pro-long their life sounds reasonable (vs. spending €30+ mil to buy new hardware).

  35. iPhone SE successor could be announced in March

Looking forward to this one as a replacement to whenever my XR conks out. My first XR only lasted to a week prior to it's warranty expiration date (thankfully and was replaced for free) but it's the last time I'm going to spend £800 for a handset. We need a more properly priced iPhone, Apple are disgracefully greedy - $50,000+ for a computer is scandalous. Yes, I know there's use cases, but we need to pull the reigns back on mobile devices. There's a lot of room a sensibly priced and sensibly powered device. We dont all want or need a flagship device with a four figure price tag but do want to remain within the Apple ecosystem.

  36. How did you find Neowin?

The fun days I miss those.. To me, those were the golden days for Microsoft. Fun Whistler builds.. hmm.. did 2211 ever leak Edit: Well, it sure it! https://betawiki.net/wiki/Windows_XP_build_2211 I know what I'm doing tonight! Longhorn 3663 still never leaked.. That's insane how that build never leaked, lol But for ###### n gigs.. I remember when 3718 leaked.. it leaked AFTER 4008, which wasn't very stable. Everyone wanted 3718 because they heard rumors that it was very stable (for an alpha anyway). Then someone stole the ISO from WinBeta and it was released by xBetas!. ahhhhh!!! The fun days of IRC, haha.

  38. The iCloud leaks were nothing more than celebs using obvious to answer password reset questions. The same thing could of happened with OneDrive back then. Less people use Onedrive, than iCloud and Google Drive. So it's safer for me somehow. Just like Outlook vs Gmail. I ain't sure about Outlook users number though, still there're more news about millions of hacked Gmail accounts. It isn't about numbers, it is about the way data is handled by Microsoft in contrast to Google and Google services. Anyone that checks out the password lists shared or sold on the dark web, the majority of information gathered in the last few years comes directly from Android devices. So if you use Android you will have a gmail account. This also means if you login to Outlook from your android device, there is chance that email and password get compromised Sadly, due to how Linux and Android are both designed, there is not a way to fully secure or fix the ways malware gets in and the way it hides. The only option would be for Google to fix it, which would also break most Apps in the Play Store, and Google doesn't care enough to fix the things that work break Apps, let alone a platform wide series of corrections to the way Android works.

That may be a very popular phone, but how many phone addicts are out there that don't have that phone? Would be great if it actually helps anyone as I know a ton of people who simply can not put their phones down, no matter what or where.

  40. Microsoft is testing ads for Office 365 in WordPad

that space was already coded for notifications and such if something needs notified. MS Office is the same way. It seems they just utilized the already existing space for minimal recoding. Plus this is just a preview, who knows if it would look that way if released to a public build. Chances are still pretty slim this will see the light of day outside of testing.

  42. Quite a lack of detail. Encryption can happen at many points in the chain. Encryption in flight? Encryption at rest? Who holds the keys. What does an iCloud backup actually consist of? As such, is Reuters making a big assumption that because Apple can hand over data about someone from Apple servers, these are iCloud backups and they are not encrypted? https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202303

  43. for what it is, it's too expensive. If it was bigger, did more clothes, had more functions, sure, I'd look into it for that price. But for what it is right now, I reckon a fair value is around 700 squids. Do you have clothing that CANNOT be washed; it must be dry-cleaned? I have three suits (two summer-weight and one winter-weight) in that category. Middle management has it worse (and has larger dry-cleaning bills as a result). That is where the market is.
