Ndragonawa and one other reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
I get the push back, and the Office team has always been weird... However, consider if they don't do this... If the users are left with Google Search, when they do a search from Chrome, and expect to see all their intranet information presented in the browser search results, WHICH IS A SPECIFIC feature off Office 365 ProPlus, and they don't get that information, they are going to be angry, especially managers that have paid for and expect this feature to work for all users. I get the disconnect with the IT and management here, but if users can't easily get their information because they or their IT have them on Chrome and using Google search, this creates additional problems. This is also an outcome from the Google dominance and that many IT people and teams do not understand why Bing is a key component of how the localized and intranet results work, OR THEY WOULD NOT BE COMPLAINING on Reddit and other places. Everyone that is complaining, instead of writing a policy or script to adjust this, are PRIME EXAMPLES of why this default setting to Bing is needed. If they understood this or their jobs better, IT IS A NON-ISSUE. So the louder IT people scream, the dumber they are. This isn't traditional end-users getting trampled on by Microsoft, this is the management and companies choosing these features and this product, and Microsoft is ensuring the search results are what they are paying for, or easily changeable by users. If anyone is having a big cow on this, remember in Europe, Google has AUCTIONED off search provider results to be displayed from Android devices, and BING is not even an option in the browser for these users.2 points -

OECD tells the UK to hold off on tech tax as firms continue to make a tidy profit
ZipZapRap and one other reacted to +mrbester for a topic
"While the OECD may not like it, countries may have to impose their own individual taxes against tech firms" No, while the OECD may not like it, countries have the right to impose their own individual taxes. Where it gets a little more complicated is that for EU a consensus is required from the member states. However, this doesn't apply to all countries in the world, such as Norway, which is free to impose its own tax should it want to even though it is in EEC (but not EU).2 points -

Everyone seems to forget that both Google and Apple do things like this, often far more egregious. Apple has been known to flip up full screen ads for users on older iPhones, to encourage them to 'upgrade'. And Google, "Do you want to use Chrome?" "Do you want to use Google" "Do you want to subscribe Youtube TV? "Do you want us to listen to you sleep too in case we didn't get all your information?" (Really, Microsoft is being compared 'unfavorably' to that crap? FFS) I also find it strange that the author of this article THINKS, this is an attempt to be more 365 subscriptions. However, if that was the goal, why on earth let people know they can use Office on the Web for FREE? The ad could recommend Office 365 home or personal and take them to the Microsoft Store, but it DOESN'T. Statistically, most users DO NOT know that Office is free to use on the Web, just like Google Docs, except faster with more features. People still think Office has a cost, and sadly, it is articles like this slamming Office and Microsoft, while failing to educate readers is the main reason why they don't. This is where tech journalism has failed people, and if Microsoft wants to mention it, IN THEIR OWN SOFTWARE, they should. Also, ads in the OS? WordPad is an old app, that is nothing more than a wrapper for the RTF controls with a couple of quick toolbars. (Something most developers could create in a few hours - seriously.) WordPad is NOT SOME SACRED piece of software or part of the OS. FFS. Also, the difference between using WordPads (1990s) RTF word processing features to the FREE version of Word Online is drastic, and most users would appreciate this bit of information. Especially as Word Online has better document handling and portability, even to NON-Microsoft formats. FFS Finally, did anyone stop to notice, this is a 'test case' and is not released to ANYONE yet?2 points -

Microsoft is testing ads for Office 365 in WordPad
oddMLan and one other reacted to shockz for a topic
The ad is in your face. There's a yellow bar across the top of the screen asking you to use another service. Wordpad isn't meant to be a word replacement, it's basically a low end processor for when you need something more than Notepad (fonts, alignments, bullet points, etc...). It's really not in your face though. It's a small bar; it's not like it's a full screen popup demanding 'USE THIS!!!' If you're really that worried about a few pixels of vertical space then you may need a bigger monitor or one with a better resolution. It's in your face, and it requires user interaction to dismiss as well. My monitor is fine, thank you.2 points -

Don't need it if you've got the newer HDMI 2.1 port, which this does. What would DisplayPort give you exactly? Compatability with the huge market of DP 1.4 monitors or TV's that have HDMi 2.0 or below. HDMi 2.0 can only support 4K @ 60hz HDR10 with subsampling where DP 1.4 can do 4k @ 120hz HDR10. Which is well beyond what the consoles are going to do in gaming. This feels similar the whole move away from headphone jacks, so companies can sell bluetooth earbuds, create a problem and sell a solution. HDMi 2.1 really doesn't exist in the consumer market outside of a few expensive TV's here and there. So if the two new consoles don't support displayport, there will be a big marketing push for HDMI 2.1 TV's that support proper HDR above 4k 30hz and all the way up to 4k 144HZ.1 point -

ZipZapRap reacted to Paul1979UK for a topic
The moral of the story is this, some kind of digital tax is coming as a lot of countries are getting onboard. Now it would be better if they come up with a worldwide solution to this problem at the end of the year so waiting till then might be the best idea and if no solution is found by then, those countries can impose that tax anyway. Either way, it doesn't look like this problem is going away with how many countries are jumping on this.1 point -
iPhone SE successor could be announced in March
forster reacted to Nas for a topic
100% Agreed. Those are the 2 take-aways (without bashing the landscape). There's no sensible reason for some devices to sell at $249 then others are $1249! That spread offers tremendous amounts of wiggle room, spec compromise, but also economies of scale (thus the A13 Bionic spread across the gamut becomes economical for production with margins available). The Apple Ecosystem may warrant an extra $100 pricetag but that doesn't justify the $1000 spread. If anyone can force Apple to consider certify third-party devices to be Apple Ecosystem Partners that'll be the day hardware specs meant for Android are truly tested with iOS (with known compromises of course, like the AI/ML chipset capabilities and what not).1 point -

Get a Pixel 4a or 4a XL. I've no doubt they are excellent phones, but I wish to remain within the Apple ecosystem. I've used plenty of Android phones and they are all well and good, but iMessage/Facetime/background battery management is just too good. There's things I dont like about iOS devices, but the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. I just believe there's a lot of space for a more conservative model. You either suck it up and continue or look for options. Choose with your wallet.1 point -
This free app lets you bring back Google Play update notifications
wingliston reacted to Brandon H for a topic
I don't understand why Google removed the notifications all together. What was wrong with having a toggle? Installs from Google Play are slow on my phone for some reason so notifications when the install completed were nice for me in case I closed the Play Store to do other things while installing something. Heck the Play Store is so slow the download/install on my phone that I prefer to download apps from APKPURE and sideload instead most of the time now. IDK what's wrong with my Play Store as I've followed every guide to improve it with no result.1 point -
CPU Fan error
Mindovermaster reacted to Daniel F. for a topic
Shutting down on power up suggests that the cpu overheated and shut down to protect cpu. As its still working it could be an intermittent failure of the fan or even the header. You have 2 CPU_OPT fan headers to the right of your CPU_FAN header, I suggest you try one of those to see if you still get the error. If you do the next step is to replace the fan/cooler im afraid. There is also a option to turn off the warnings - but this is NOT recommended Fan Speed Monitor - set to off And finally if you have removed the CPU cooler to clean it did you reseat it correctly? Did you also put enough thermal paste on correctly?1 point -

They're probably going to retire the program, probably why they're pushing you elsewhere. Looks like that they did with the old screen snip program, they built in an "ad" to push you a different program. Besides, haven't used it literally in a couple of decades, along with the other bundled stuff. Zero F's given here, all the built-in software gets replaced by better options after installation.1 point -

I don't see what the big deal is honestly. WordPad needs to be retired; it's not up to word processing standards, is quite limited on features, and doesn't really even support anything outside of .rtf as far as I'm aware. Offering the free Word Web as an alternate solution seems perfectly fine to me; plus the 'ad' isn't in your face at all so it's not really annoying. It's just kind of there on a small bar underneath the ribbon.1 point -
