  6. now THIS I don't agree with. If a different default search engine is set then no app should be allowed to alter that without user notification or approval/interaction. That's just rude and anti-competitive.

  7. Epic Games Can't get basic features working on their platform (even Stadia has achievements) Can't develop their own games (the last original title was what... Gears of War which they don't even own anymore) Pays for exclusivity, including revoking accessibility of a game that was already crowd funded, with no intentions to discontinue this behavior Offers devs/publishers 88/12 which provides the consumer zero tangible benefit; but at least the companies are profiting, right?! This move demonstrates yet another milestone in Epic's seemingly backward ass thinking. Valve doesn't have a perfect track record, don't get me wrong, but when customers complained, they answered back. Customer service today vs. 5 years ago is drastically different, as well as throwing out paid mods after backlash. That to me is just called listening to their consumer base. Microsoft too has turned things around due to customer feedback. That is the sort of behavior I want to see and actively encourage from big companies. Not... this. Not sending the industry backwards.

  10. iPhone SE successor could be announced in March

Get a Pixel 4a or 4a XL. That's pretty poor advice when you don't know if he uses other apple products within the ecosystem. He may use apple card, have a large itunes catalogue, historical health logging, family sharing icloud plans/photos, location sharing with children, have homekit aware products such as the secure video cameras, or thermostat. Ecosystem changes are not easy for everyone.

How can I transform it into a true style native font[ say ML Revathi or Karthika] when using a Unicode font[ mostly IME based Malayalam, India]. What encoding method can I use. It is better to have an example of experienced coding. C#/ASp.net

  14. Trying to run Adobe Premier on a Intel® HD Graphics 5000 Integrated GPU?

Same thing happens to me. Adobe takes me to a page to download an "updated" driver... but my CPU/GPU is too old. Oh well. Like I said... everything still works. I wish there was a way to permanently disable the warning... as if to say "I know my hardware is 'unsupported' but it's still perfectly functional..." 😛 For me... I don't even need the Intel GPU... I only enabled it to get the benefits of Intel QuickSync. I could run solely on the NVidia GPU. But for you... it's your *only* GPU. You'll have to live with the warning. Good luck! And happy editing!

  17. Are you American? You need to consider how useless Bing is outside of its core countries (US, UK, France, Germany etc). Also even if it was useful, forcing it like this is just not A-OK I think its much ado about not much but I think I get your point. IF Microsoft had suggested that its default search engine would be the one built by Google, I would be less inclined to use Office. That said, nothing is preventing anyone from clicking on the browser that undoubtedly would be visible on the tray and searching Google like they always have. Right? No one is being forced to do anything. UPDATE: Because the information wasn't available to me or the OP's obvious animous with Microsoft, in my corporate email they included this bit of news on this: ". The extension sets Bing as the default search engine by default; users may turn it off via the extension toggle." It would help to update with all available information as readers might otherwise be put off by such news. How does it make sense to change your browser default search preference through the Office extension? If it isn't even required to make those searches why even set it as default instead of at least asking the user first and explaining any advantages when they are prompted? Its not that heavy to me. Bing is one of many search engine out there. It is a tool used to provide answers. Microsoft is pairing it's Office with its search engine, Bing. If you feel it necessary to have a different choice, make it and move on with your life. I installed Office. I did not install Bing. If I wanted to use Bing, I would do it in my browser.

Ecosystem changes are not easy for everyone. That's the problem with the iOS/macOS ecosystem: you are stuck with one brand, with a limited number of devices to choose from, and with the prices we all know. They take advantage of it.

  22. iPhone SE successor could be announced in March

Could you not just buy an older model iPhone? I mean theoretically that would be a similar outcome relative to purchasing an under-powered android device. Maybe I'm missing something. My iPad Air (1st gen) is still great and I imagine it'd be dirt cheap now. I have the iPhone 11 Pro and it, to me, is entirely warranted in price. It's very close to, if not, the most useful thing I own and costs hardly anything relative to the price of things that do far less for far less money, or far more for far more money.

I think the idea of using an XBox as a media hub is kind of dead. Lets be honest, cable tv is falling off massively already. I imagine that was a somewhat complicated feature to support anyway (I never used it, but I assume the xbox has the ability to control the set-to-box, which means always having to test it against new models) and probably almost never used.

  29. But who said you have to buy new hardware? It's not like Windows 10 doesn't run very well on Windows 7 era hardware, I've got it running just fine on a old i7 920 I built back in 2009. The cost to upgrade the OS would be around the same depending on the type of gov deal MS gives.

  31. Oh God, I remember those days. The cryptic ActiveX install prompt that no basic user could be expected to understand. They press Yes and you have to re-image the machine, ugg. I was doing desktop support back in the day for a group of only 100 users, were typically had to re-image at least one computer a week due to those issues. Software of the day didn't play nice without admin rights, so taking that away from users (which I pushed for at the time) was a major uphill battle.

  33. I started using bing for image searches a few years ago (google wasn't good at it back then) and then it slowly became the default. (The one annoying problem that I have with it though is that it does not show the wikipedia link for certain searches in the upper section of the results, or even on the first page for some reason.) Saying that, it's unacceptable to force something as major as this upon users. Improve your product if you want people to use it.

  39. The iCloud leaks were nothing more than celebs using obvious to answer password reset questions. The same thing could of happened with OneDrive back then. Less people use Onedrive, than iCloud and Google Drive. So it's safer for me somehow. Just like Outlook vs Gmail. I ain't sure about Outlook users number though, still there're more news about millions of hacked Gmail accounts. It isn't about numbers, it is about the way data is handled by Microsoft in contrast to Google and Google services. Anyone that checks out the password lists shared or sold on the dark web, the majority of information gathered in the last few years comes directly from Android devices. So if you use Android you will have a gmail account. This also means if you login to Outlook from your android device, there is chance that email and password get compromised Sadly, due to how Linux and Android are both designed, there is not a way to fully secure or fix the ways malware gets in and the way it hides. The only option would be for Google to fix it, which would also break most Apps in the Play Store, and Google doesn't care enough to fix the things that work break Apps, let alone a platform wide series of corrections to the way Android works.

  40. Agree with the sentiment, but technically passwords handed on the cloud side are not subject to compromise for most online cloud providers. There are also ways passwords are used to encrypt data that makes the users data more secure than a non-shared or local password. For example, Microsoft's password servers (MS Account/Passport) are walled off. If Microsoft and OneDrive and Outlook.com are all fully hacked, that doesn't mean the hacker will get access or be able to read anyone's data stored on these services, as it is encrypted using the user's key that uses strict token passing from the password servers. This also means, MS engineers working with OneDrive data, can't read the user's document or see their picture, the data sets are an encrypted mess to humans. I do agree that people should do research on any cloud service, and know for sure the data is protected properly, and also protected from the cloud service provider as well. They have no business reading content. (Which is one of biggest beefs with Google, as they leave all data accessible by engineers, which is not necessary.) Another tip/trick, is to use client side encryption, especially as services offer differential data updating where you can encrypt an entire Volume (HD) that only your local system can decrypt and open. (Use a VHD for example, mount it as drive Z:, fully encrypt the volume with bitlocker or even use NTFS folder/file level encryption, and then store the VHD on your Cloud data service.) This ensures nobody can read it. This can also be done on a more granular level with any type of package/compression technology that has good encryption, and selectively encrypt data before it is uploaded.

  45. "But Microsoft is looking into other ways it can inform users when an app is trustworthy, and if a better solution is found, it's likely that there won't be a need for the Microsoft Store to exist anymore." I disagree. For example, I don't want every app to have to have its own update infrastructure - the current store lets one tool take care of updating all the store apps in the background, without lots of unnecessary services that all do the same thing.
