All countries and regional powers come up with bad laws from time to time, I've seen enough stupid ones from the UK and US over the decades so it's nothing new. Anyway, what should really worry us Brits isn't this kind of law they scrap but laws the UK scrap that are in the interest in keeping them for the British public, so watering down on workers rights, food standards and so on as the EU has high standards in a lot of areas like that and I can only see the UK standards getting worse which will only hurt the UK public.2 points -

Google added icons to search results and now I think it's all spam
+Dick Montage and one other reacted to MS Bob 11 for a topic
It's not the favicons that bother me or the murking of ads vs actual results. It's the demotion of the good old URL that I'm angry about. Some extremely bad design decisions which should addressed by Google: 1. Bring back FULL URL, NOT some ridiculous breadcrumbs style. This is the open web, not Windows File Explorer. URLs are around since forever. No need to pervert them. Just present them as they are. Web browsers show URLs in the address bar and people aren't scared of them. We don't see breadcrumbs in browser address bar. 2. Bring back URL in green or prominent color 3. Move URL to 2nd row and blue page title to top row as it was. All reasonable requests. It’s devious of them to remove the URL as it exists and present it in the perverted breadcrumbs style Current design is AWFUL and it's not just a question of getting used to change. They are needlessly perverting the URL2 points -

At this point does anything Google do surprise people? From messing with their sites so they don't play well with other browsers, to all the search bs to boost their ad heavy bottom line and so on. At this point it's clear, they'll do anything on the down low and sit back to see if enough people notice and react to it, then change it, for now. Watch them do something like this again down the line, or something close to it so that they can keep that ad revenue coming in.2 points -

The UK will not implement the controversial copyright directive passed by the EU last year
Azilgath reacted to George P for a topic
If someone wants to monetise their "reviews and reactions" then they should be paying for a license to use the content. If you want to show a clip of copyrighted content on a TV/radio show you have to pay money for a licence, why should it be different on the internet? There's already laws in place for fair use, they limit the clips length etc specifically for reviews, reactions and other things like comedy skits etc. This has been the norm for quite some time. To come and change it out of the blue now to the effect that even a simple meme that is just a still image from a movie is banned? Come on. And that aside, my stance on the length of copyrights for media, movies/music is way too long. In the US mostly thanks to disney so they don't lose Micky Mouse to the public domain, so they've spent loads of money to get govs to extend the time limits.1 point -

Of course no one is surprised. Unfortunately they happen to have the best search engine, the second best (apparently, not sure I believe it) is bing and in comparison I would actually class bing as entirely useless. Clearly google knows this, so they have free reign to so whatever. I ditched Google as a search engine more than a year ago for Bing. Turns out, it's good enough. DuckDuckGo being my second alternative and only if all else fails I check Google - and more often than not, in those cases, not even Google is worth a damn. Same here. Haven't ever really used Google as my main search engine. Do use it on my phone occasionally though if I need to look up something real quick, but that isn't very often.1 point -
webmin: Handles the name-based server www.my-domain.org on address *.
Mindovermaster reacted to DaveLegg for a topic
Been a while since I've used Webmin, but at a guess, that's referring to IP addresses. You could have multiple public IPs assigned to your server, say 1.2.3.4, 1.2.3.5, 1.2.3.6 and so on. With this setting, you could connect to the server on any of those IP addresses, request the site, and you'd get it. If you bound the site to a specific IP address, say 1.2.3.4, then you could connect using that IP, request the site, and the server would return it, but if you connected to say 1.2.3.5 and requested the site, the server would give you a 4041 point -

I liked it. It has more of the classic Star Trek storytelling pace than Discovery and the story itself is intriguing and potentially wonderful. Picard is played accordingly to his age apart from few shots during running all scenes were done by Patrick Stewart...or by some really advanced CGI All that sad, 1st episode should have been stretched to 2 episodes as the story and characters needed more time and dialogues needlessly suffered on occasion. Looking forward to the rest of the season.1 point -

change or upgrade parts in older samsung aio?
waysidesc reacted to goretsky for a topic
Hello, According to the specifications, the Samsung Series 7 DP700A3B-A02US AIO computer has an Intel Core i5-2390T processor, which is a second generation Sandy Bridge (Intel Core) CPU. More specifically, a 35-watt CPU that fits in an LGA-1155 socket (aka Socket H2). Another second generation Intel Core CPU that might work is Intel Core i5-2500T, but it is a 45-watt part, so good thermal paste and a working CPU fan would be required at a minimum. There are some third generation Ivy Bridge (Intel Core) series CPUs that might work as well. In particular, an Intel Core i5-3470T, which is a 35 watt part, or an Intel Core i5-3570T or Intel Core i7-3770T, which are both 45-watt parts (again, with the same provisos about cooling). In order to definitively know what CPU upgrades are possible, if any, I would suggest asking in Samsung's own support forum, as that is the place where experts and fellow users on this system are going to hang out and know. At the very least, you will want to upgrade the system to the newest BIOS (UEFI) firmware possible before attempting a CPU upgrade. Also, keep in mind that while it may be technically possible to perform the upgrade, it might be expensive to purchase a CPU for what might bring only a minimal upgrade in terms of performance. London's Met Police begins using live facial recognition, raising privacy and bias concerns
Emn1ty reacted to domboy for a topic
The issue is that a lot of the models that they use for facial recognition are trained on certain data sets. These datasets if biased towards particular genders or races can cause the model to better differentiate one group over another. For example if you train it on 1000 white men and only 20 black women, the model is likely to consider all black women as the same person because the data set doesn't offer enough training points. However, the only way to really eliminate bias in these models is to give them some real world training globally and tune them. Otherwise there's not gonna be enough data to train them accurately just in simulations and labs. Ahh, that makes sense. Thanks for explaining Emn1ty!1 point -

It's quite a leap from your neighbours seeing when you pull into your driveway and an anonymous visit to a store (assuming the stores you go to don't have facial recognition systems). This is real-time ID tracking around a city. And? Unless I'm in some sort of fascist regimen that only allows me to go specific places, what do I care? And no, retail stores have been called out for tracking consumers via video feed, and tying PII to track them and their purchasing habits, and as of yet I haven't had any ill effects of said tracking. Also the point of nest and ring, those videos can be used as evidence already. Not to mention police have attempted to survey neighborhoods for doorbell cam footage to follow a persons movement after committing a crime. This type of infrastructure has already been in place for the police to use... the only difference is now they have their own cameras and don't need to go house to house obtaining video evidence.1 point -

it says oven but it's not an oven in the traditional sense. The picture in the article is the product. It's a microwave with air-fryer capability. That's where having Alexa notify you in the room you're in could be useful IMO1 point -

Most emulators have version 7 as the newest possible and that's pretty good as it will be supported long enough for them to take their time to go through 8, 9 and 10 before support ends. Doesn't matter what version is, as long as it works. And security updates and emulators kinda don't go hand in hand. Usually people use them to play some game and shut them down, not using them full time like the phones in their pockets so it doesn't matter.1 point -

I live in Ontario and have Bell FTTH going directly into a SFP Port on my US-8-150W. The Internet traffic is tagged with VLAN 35 not VLAN 34 as Farchord is seeing in Shawinigan. In my journey to get this up last year I noted that the VLAN tagging varied across providers and geographic regions so just make sure that you note the way it is tagged by your provider. 🙂 "Show me a person paying for porn tv and I'll show you someone who doesn't know how to use the Internet"1 point
