The UK will not implement the controversial copyright directive passed by the EU last year
wotsit and 2 others reacted to Paul1979UK for a topic
All countries and regional powers come up with bad laws from time to time, I've seen enough stupid ones from the UK and US over the decades so it's nothing new. Anyway, what should really worry us Brits isn't this kind of law they scrap but laws the UK scrap that are in the interest in keeping them for the British public, so watering down on workers rights, food standards and so on as the EU has high standards in a lot of areas like that and I can only see the UK standards getting worse which will only hurt the UK public.3 points -

This is my question as well. Fair use should not be effected by this law if it already exists as a law. My issue is that laws like this prohibit innovation. Think about if this law was applied to hardware. If Apple was the first to come out with a 30:1 screen, and then Samsung did the same thing, Apple could sue and automatically win. Nowadays, companies do copy off each other, but innovate on top of that. Yes, you can argue that they don't innovate, but that's a topic for another day2 points -
Google acknowledges the controversial redesign of its search results on desktop
quikmantx and one other reacted to Atlantico for a topic
Of course no one is surprised. Unfortunately they happen to have the best search engine, the second best (apparently, not sure I believe it) is bing and in comparison I would actually class bing as entirely useless. Clearly google knows this, so they have free reign to so whatever. I ditched Google as a search engine more than a year ago for Bing. Turns out, it's good enough. DuckDuckGo being my second alternative and only if all else fails I check Google - and more often than not, in those cases, not even Google is worth a damn.2 points -

Google Camera 7.2 (Play Store and elsewhere) - Thoughts/Opinions?
xrobwx71 reacted to PGHammer for a topic
As has been circulated, Google Camera 7.2 is available on the Play Store (no longer lashed to the Pixel 4 - and possibly not to Android 10, either). Have you tested it, what Android device did you test it on, etc.? I started the thread; therefore, I'll lead off. I have it on Android 10, on my daily-driver Pixel 3a (sargo). It required no mods. Most pleasant surprise/improvement (compared to the same app in stock Android) - NightSight. This feature improved still more over the same feature in Camera 7.1; especially for low-light indoor pictures. Coming up is THE season for such - Christmas/Yule in particular. (Before, I laid low and didn't participate in the picture-taking; however, I don't have an excuse now.) Biggest quibble - the same one I had with Camera 7.1; motion is on by default. (Do that many folks NOT use the Camera app for stills that such a default makes sense? It's the ONLY camera app that does this.) Upshot - other than the one quibble, it's still the deadliest camera app for Android - if not any OS - that is not ODM-specific1 point -

That purely subjective. My daughter has an older 15in and it actually looks aesthetically pleasing in person. The MBP is a tired and old design. It doesn’t look bad, but has looked similar in the last decade or so. Time to change up the design IMO.1 point -

Azilgath reacted to George P for a topic
If someone wants to monetise their "reviews and reactions" then they should be paying for a license to use the content. If you want to show a clip of copyrighted content on a TV/radio show you have to pay money for a licence, why should it be different on the internet? There's already laws in place for fair use, they limit the clips length etc specifically for reviews, reactions and other things like comedy skits etc. This has been the norm for quite some time. To come and change it out of the blue now to the effect that even a simple meme that is just a still image from a movie is banned? Come on. And that aside, my stance on the length of copyrights for media, movies/music is way too long. In the US mostly thanks to disney so they don't lose Micky Mouse to the public domain, so they've spent loads of money to get govs to extend the time limits.1 point -
Broadband/fibre woes - "£65 callout charge"

Yes it's FTTC, its a true pain. A gent from BT came out today and has replaced my master socket, and two connector boxes that the line initially comes into the property before it hits the master socket. As a result, Ive gone up from 39meg to 44meg, and he's set away to the cabinet and the pole to see if he can make any improvements. The cab is at the bottom of my street, about 500 yards away and measures at 77meg. So over 500 yards I'm losing more than 30meg a second so it's pretty poor. Thankfully the 44 is still under my guaranteed minimum, so Im going to give it till the start of next week and ring them to see what else can be done. He did mention that FTTH could be available, but I'd literally have to find some way of covering the entire number to bring it to the area, and as I am in a very low-rent, low-business area I cant see it ever happening.1 point -

Article 13 would really screw youtube creators over. Many of them do reviews and reactions to movies/music and so on. If it's the way it sounds, well damn, there goes that market. And not just Youtube but all the others would get hit to. I'm really not big on copyright laws, they need to have a reasonable expiration date for music and movies. Games should as well if they're no longer active from the original creators, as in, not a ongoing series. That one off hit from 20 years ago should lose it's copyright basically. As far as #11 goes, I dunno how I feel about that one.1 point -

I'd say the Wise program catalog is way better. CCleaner has long ago turned into a piece of trash. It's glory days were around 2010. Wise Disk Cleaner for junk files and defragmentation Wise Registry Cleaner for registry optimization Wise Program Uninstaller for uninstalling programs and cleaning up after since they all leave traces such as registry entried behind which otherwise you have to either clean as junk files or waste time browsing through folders to clean manually You’ve been tricked into believing you need a registry cleaner?1 point -

Google added icons to search results and now I think it's all spam
+Dick Montage reacted to MS Bob 11 for a topic
It's not the favicons that bother me or the murking of ads vs actual results. It's the demotion of the good old URL that I'm angry about. Some extremely bad design decisions which should addressed by Google: 1. Bring back FULL URL, NOT some ridiculous breadcrumbs style. This is the open web, not Windows File Explorer. URLs are around since forever. No need to pervert them. Just present them as they are. Web browsers show URLs in the address bar and people aren't scared of them. We don't see breadcrumbs in browser address bar. 2. Bring back URL in green or prominent color 3. Move URL to 2nd row and blue page title to top row as it was. All reasonable requests. It’s devious of them to remove the URL as it exists and present it in the perverted breadcrumbs style Current design is AWFUL and it's not just a question of getting used to change. They are needlessly perverting the URL1 point -

At this point does anything Google do surprise people? From messing with their sites so they don't play well with other browsers, to all the search bs to boost their ad heavy bottom line and so on. At this point it's clear, they'll do anything on the down low and sit back to see if enough people notice and react to it, then change it, for now. Watch them do something like this again down the line, or something close to it so that they can keep that ad revenue coming in.1 point -

Microsoft promises to remove all of the carbon it has ever emitted by 2050
DarkTorizo reacted to samw61 for a topic
Opinion vs Science. The science is clear though. I would argue that the reason companies like this are jumping on board is precisely BECAUSE of government pressure. Maybe not America, or sadly Australian governments, however much of Europe, Asia (surprisingly) and many others are actively putting good environmental policy in place. America, Australia and others are so behind the times its embarrassing. This is why companies are not investing in these countries, because the policy isn't clear, and does not allow everyone to be on the same playing field. Props to MS for taking this on!1 point -

Facebook bans deepfake videos in run-up to the 2020 U.S. election

It's not about getting news from Facebook. It's about Aunt Sally sharing some Russian troll post that is also shared by Uncle Bob and the next thing you know it's all over the news feed. Usually the title alone and an inflammatory image are enough to impact a persons perception of whatever the topic is about, even if they don't read it. It's continually enforced in this circle and vicous cycle. And if it's been shared 50,000 times, must be true right?1 point -
