anyone else sick of 5G yet?... All this controversy about who makes what, all the over hyping... Heck verizon how is running an ad saying how 5G helps firefighters.. and they basically show a FLIR image with edge finding mode turned on... how is that 5G? They can do that now with a FLIR camera in the field... heck even with 5G you'd still need the FLIR Lepton sensors in field to see what they implemented 5G can do.. so much over hyping, so much over promising... especially with the whole 5G will be your home internet connection stuff... yep I want a signal that isn't always there depending on conditions and what frequency range they used and more then likely charge per the gig also on a shared bandwidth network in my house to replace my copper / fiber line...4 points -

If by best you mean most polished and refined, then yes, I agree. You can't really call it technically the best when there is a huge number of features it is missing that newer systems have. Like what's missing in Windows 7 that Windows 10 has besides junk called DX12? DX12 is important for gamers, maybe you don't care, but some do Modern hardware support (Windows 7 doesn't take full advantage of modern CPUs, also some of the newest motherboards don't even include Win7 drivers). Lots of minor but impactful enhancements to Windows File Explorer Windows 10 has much better duel monitor support. Much better support for high-res monitors that require scaling. Might seem silly, but the admin-menu by right-clicking start is insanely useful. Metered network settings so you don't accidentally blowup your hotspot data-plan downloading updates. Built-in SSH client/server (not a big deal for most, but as a nerd, I love it) Support for MS accounts (not forced to used them if you don't like them, but when you have 6 computers and 4 kids, its a must have) Nearly instant sleep/wake on laptops Touch-screen support Much easier to use on-screen controls for turning WiFi and cellular interfaces on/off, and automatic switching between them and Ethernet so you are always using the best possible connection Far from a complete list, but that is what I thought of off the top of my head.3 points -

otto888 and 2 others reacted to Ccl Ncc for a topic
Good for id software. People should just abandon all the developers which even think of micro-transactions, where is the unity! Not sure why government does not intervene for the company like super-cell. Super-cell is the worst company I have ever seen in practice, they make deals with youtubers, which keeps on showing new things like skins, models (without any mention of contact with the company), which leads kids to believe that they should also keep buying stuff, not to mention they never even give clear mention of what you will get for your money, as it's always a draw system.3 points -

dead.cell and one other reacted to Brandon H for a topic
That’s exactly how it works. Go try getting FOIA documents for free, especially ones that require considerable digging to acquire. I don't think you understand what law enforcement is. That's like cops come up to your door with a search warrant, and you say "alright officer, that'll be $100". unfortunately that's not the same; that's an individual vs a business. they have different protections. it's not so much the request for information but the time and resources needed to provide the requested info. Tell how different it is to Bitconnect lol. If it's that hard to search, then provide the Police an interface to do the search themselves. now you're just going into circular logic. There are several reasons FBI/Government shouldn't be allowed free at will access to encrypted systems ....2 points -

I suspect the porting process is much easier for developers if they are using Vulkan across all those platforms whereas DX12 is only used on Windows 10 and Xbox consoles. Also, even thought both api's are cut from the same cloth, Vulkan seems to be delivers better performance overall from what I've seen over DX12.1 point -

Windows 7 has one more update in store for everyone
+JHBrown reacted to OldGuru for a topic
Windows 7 is basically Vista with a more refined UI on top of it. In the history of Windows NT based systems, the only big updates were NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Window Vista. Everything else was just a face-lift. Windows 10's UI works just fine. Just because you don't care for it doesn't make it unusable. That is an insanely arrogant point of view...and one that is demonstrably wrong considering that absolutely huge number of people using it just fine everyday of their life. Windows 10 UI is a junk and if you like it that's fine, most people don't which says MS. failed there.1 point -

Windows 10 is basically Windows 7 with unusable UI on top of it. Since business model for Windows 10 failed, PWA, UWP, Store...it comes down to being just another flavor of Windows 7 with horrible UI and other spyware baked into it. I know that Microsoft said Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, and I believe that is one stupid claim. I would like to see Microsoft separating themselves from the disaster called Windows 10 and work toward a new OS. Windows 10 is pretty old too at this point, 5+ years old and it got somewhat stable after so many updates. I wonder what will Microsoft do about 400+ million of people running Windows 7, probably they will lose all of those customers to Mac OS and Linux. Microsoft hit the dead end with Windows 10, with 1909 and 2004 (currently running) very little separates them from 1903 in other words MS. got nothing for it. I'd say they should call Windows 10 feature complete and focus on a new OS, which is a great opportunity to get rid of cancer called UWP, and the current UI, telemetry and all other spyware bloatware. Microsoft wants the light, fast OS...how about revisiting Windows 2000 where entire installation is 200-300Mb and had very little foot print on system resource. Windows 2000 Professional is the best Desktop OS ever created, period. While doing that, MS should completely remove bloatware crap called .NET and anything associated with. Don't get me wrong, I make for living as .NET developer but if I had to be honest...it is pure garbage.1 point -

Windows 7 has one more update in store for everyone
domboy reacted to warrenrumak for a topic
Windows 10 is more than good enough as a replacement for Windows 7. Anything you think you don't like about Windows 10 is either resolved within the OS itself, or can be resolved using third-party tools. Want to hard-disable all telemetry? There are multiple programs out there that do exactly that. Do you prefer the Windows 7 visual style? Stardock has you covered. Don't like UWP apps? Here's a novel idea: Don't use them! Eventually you have to stop coming up with excuses and join the rest of us in the modern era. We've been through all this before. People held onto Windows 98 SE for years because Windows XP was "fisher price" and "bloated". You had to pry Windows 2000 out of the hands of curmudgeonly IT admins who didn't like Windows Server 2008 R2's significantly more complex UI. There were a ton of graybeards who stuck with Mac OS 9 for several years until after Mac OS X came out because they didn't like the goofy animations and a lot of the magical simplicity was lost. Even the Amiga, OS/2 and Apple ][gs people had to let go eventually. You can do it. It's not that big a deal.1 point -

London's Met Police begins using live facial recognition, raising privacy and bias concerns
dead.cell reacted to dustojnikhummer for a topic
It's quite a leap from your neighbours seeing when you pull into your driveway and an anonymous visit to a store (assuming the stores you go to don't have facial recognition systems). This is real-time ID tracking around a city. And? Unless I'm in some sort of fascist regimen that only allows me to go specific places, what do I care? And no, retail stores have been called out for tracking consumers via video feed, and tying PII to track them and their purchasing habits, and as of yet I haven't had any ill effects of said tracking. Also the point of nest and ring, those videos can be used as evidence already. Not to mention police have attempted to survey neighborhoods for doorbell cam footage to follow a persons movement after committing a crime. This type of infrastructure has already been in place for the police to use... the only difference is now they have their own cameras and don't need to go house to house obtaining video evidence. Except that the UK is almost that. Look, they are banning kitchen knives.1 point -

Apple is changing the iOS 14 development process following the buggy release of iOS 13
Lil Alien reacted to shockz for a topic
Agile development is seriously one of the worst things that has ever happened to software. Gone of the days are proper QA and finishing features. Obviously no final release will ever be bug free, but with all the major players, it feels like I’ve been a perpetual beta for years. Beta purgatory. The whole yearly major release cycle just might not be cut out for everyone, especially when you have only 3 or so months of intense beta testing.1 point
