PCMark benchmark says the new Edge performs 10% better than the legacy version
matthiew and 4 others reacted to RamGuy for a topic
I have yet to experience any UWP application that have been working better than it's Win32 application on any of my Windows desktops. Sure there hasn't been that many, but I have tried to use some but they have all failed to provide me with a good experience: Skype (UWP) compared to Skype (Win32). The GUI just doesn't fit desktop use, everything took up way too much space to make much sense for me on a desktop. The Win32 app just had better optimised GUI for desktop use. Didn't use it for long as I moved away from Skype completely. Microsoft Edge (EdgeHTML/UWP) vs Chromium (Win32). I did actually enjoy the look and feel of Microsoft Edge and it's smooth scrolling. But that was pretty much it. Barely any extensions and the few that I used worked horribly compared to Chromium. Rendering issues, the entire browser would lock-up, randomly close and whatnot. Not a great experience other than it's look and feel. OneNote (UWP) vs OneNote 2016. Perhaps the UWP-app I used the most. But I pretty much used it simply because Microsoft claimed that the Win32 was end-of-life and wouldn't receive any meaningful updates or features. The UWP-app worked okay, but having proofing directly tied with your Windows Settings is horrible for people like me who prefer to have everything displayed in English, but I type in Norwegian. It often had sync issues so I had to just disconnect my Microsoft Account and start all over again for sync to work. I started to get used to it but moved back to OneNote 2016 when Microsoft did yet another turn-around and announced that the Win32 application will the one getting development going forward. And man, as soon as I was back using OneNote 2016 I began to understand how inferior the UWP had really been. There is just nothing with the UWP-version that I find superior.5 points -

PCMark benchmark says the new Edge performs 10% better than the legacy version
dead.cell and 2 others reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
There are some published results online, and most of them seem fairly accurate to what we have found. The speed is often in the margin of error, with Edge besting Chrome most of the time. Chrome has a tiny <1% win in javascript tests, but this is expected as Microsoft adds additional security that Chrome doesn't. As many expected, network usage is lower in Edge, as Chrome sends a ton of encrypted data back to Google, still around 1.5-2GB per week for an average non-cellular user. As with EdgeHTML, Edge does better with Battery, CPU, and can be dramatically better with Memory use in lower memory systems. (Sub 2GB RAM) As most people can see, Edge Chromium performs much better than EdgeHTML on actual sites, due to web developers using Chromium specific code or shoving old IE code to EdgeHTML. Reconstructing similar sites locally, and properly sending the same content as standards, EdgeHTML is faster most of the time. But not enough on modern systems. The painful area is on older, slower systems, where Chromium is a pig in comparison. I'm curious what other users are finding with various tests.3 points -

No suprise there. The old edge may render faster but the frequent bugs, crashes, missing features, horrid big UI for desktop and slow updates made it a non starter from day 1 for most people. Seems win32 beat UWP again in usability, stability and speed.3 points -

I mean, most people have some kind of case, or silicone cover, so it really isn't going to affect us... Case designs will most likely be tweaked in thickness in order to keep the camera from poking out far enough to cause damage to itself due to the bump. Just sayin... It's a problem that some people will experience... But for those of us who are smart enough to use a case, it's a non-issue.2 points -

W10 could sure do with some design sense whats wrong with the windows 10 UI? It looks great with true color, monochromatic, and single color icons... along with flat windows that have no color, but have a color title bar if you want and may or may not have a icon on the left... and multiple context menu styles makes it easier to tell where they did and did not upgrade... and the mix of old and new property windows is amazing... oh and that universal app design of the control panel... amazing, having half the functionality but taking up 3x the space is a great design. that's obvisouly sarcasim... but besides the obvious design issues... windows 10 for me at least works great, I just wish we would pick one darn UI that isn't monochromatic... metro style was horrible and still is horrible... we need depth and color2 points -

Microsoft's Phil Spencer dismisses Nintendo and Sony, sees Google and Amazon as rivals
+E.Worm Jimmy and one other reacted to trojan_market for a topic
I have so much respect for Phil Spenser but he is wrong and so is the author of this article: no it hasn’t and in fact if you just see the factual numbers Nintendo has been the most successful despite not having any cloud backend. Hardware will play a big role because fast internet infrastructure is not even close to what it should be for cloud streaming therefore services like google stadia is failing miserably unless a breakthrough comes along on global high speed internet connectivity. I personally play the most on the plane or hotel and that makes services like Apple Arcade or devices like Nintendo switch the best choices and believe these are the future of gaming. Consoles and PC games will always be there of course for hard core gamers2 points -

According to Phil Spencer. However, judging by what I've observed in the last 20 years ago, game publishers are focusing on making it easier for gamers to have legitimately licensed games. 7+ year old components possibly failing?
dlf reacted to Jim K for a topic
Assuming lines/distortion/freezing regardless of stage (for example even in the BIOS): Yea, I would pull the GPU. Boot using on the on-board GPU. If you receive no video out ... clear your CMOS. You might have your on-board GPU disabled ... which is an option within the BIOS under "Peripherals" If problem happens with the on-board GPU ... may want to pull all but one stick of memory and try again (doubt this is the issue). If the system seems fine without any artifacts/freezing/etc. ... go ahead and try the Radeon again (maybe it just needs to be reseated). If problem resurfaces ... the GPU or PSU is probably the culprit. Hard to tell you which...though I would lean towards the GPU. Anyway ... I'm willing to bet the dGPU is dying or it just needs to be reseated.1 point -

The goal of the surface line is doing what it was set out to do, not take over the market but show it's OEM partners what to do. As far as that goes they're always going to price themselves higher, and they're not going to put every bell and whistle on each device, let the OEMs do that.1 point -

...and UWP apps suck compared to Win32 (on desktops) nope: clean install/uninstall/updates, not messing around with system settings, 3rd party apps duting installation, registry, files around Just face the reality - UWP is a dead failure. It looks like garbage, it works like garbage. All the UWP programs in Windows 10 are inferior to their Windows 7 counterparts. Calculator now takes the whole screen and looks like a touch screen program. Pictures or whatever has limited capabilities, same with Videos, Music and whatnot. The Paint 3D is a pretty useless gimmick that nobody asked for or needs. People still use old Paint and Notepad, because they just work. my calculator doens't take full screen, should be broken nightingale replaced my postman installation, the first one us 1/20th of ram of postman, but please feel free to keep blaming UWP Calculator still looks oversized, you know what I'm talking about, don't play dumb. You know it's big, ugly, has no reason to be this big and it's a downgrade to the old calculator. Other apps don't matter, Microsoft is thinking of shutting down the Store altogether. Let's see what you'll be saying when it shuts down, will you still find a way to defend it? If Microsoft are shutting down their own failed creation, it means it's THAT BAD. you said it's full screen, not me ... maybe you don't know that you can resize it? does it still look too big for you? https://i.imgur.com/oVAmX1A.png" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/oVAmX1A.png" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/oVAmX1A.png Is it a downgrade? it includes more features, conversions and soon also a graph mode, what do you miss from old calculator? LOL you really believe few MS haters "jourrnalists" that MS is going to shut down the store? let me know when we want to catch up on this? december? And those features are useful to who? 0.0000000000000000000000000000000001% of all Windows 10 users? You don't just become a smoker only because your new car has a cigarette lighter and you feel not using it is a huge waste. And how does the horrible calculator size account for all the new additions? Is it, by chance that Microsoft said "let's improve the calculator, but let's not make it perfect, we need to make it insanely big to balance out the good things we did to it". Said no one ever. How successful has been the store? Not much. Apps in there don't get updated for 2-3 years. Some look like they are still from Windows 8. The whole app language either hasn't evolved or the app developers just don't bother with it, because they apps still look crude and ugly since they don't update them anymore as they also saw the failure of the store. The store made sense for when there was Windows Mobile, but that also failed hilariously so the store only remains like a monument of Micorosft's stupidity. Good thing I have a free Windows 10 license, so I don't have to pay for that pile of garbage otherwise I'd be feeling pretty ripped off. If it wasn't for gaming, I'd switch to Linux in a heartbeat. As long as I can browse the web, read my e-mails, work on documents and watch videos, Linux will suffice, but not for gaming... Let's try again easy: - i showed you that you can resize the calculator, so it's not huge - you talked about old calculator features, so i told you about the new calculator features... What are the features that you miss from old calculator? I see just an hating rant without fair points, trying to blame everything at any cost1 point -
