Microsoft explains how Win32 apps will work on Windows 10X
+Dick Montage and 3 others reacted to George P for a topic
You don't know that at all, the container vs native is said to be pretty close. I doubt you'll notice the difference. At that point you are better with Linux and running Windows Win32 apps through Wine. A container and a emulator aren't the same thing, apples to oranges. WINE is not an emulator but a wrapper for Win32 API but I do not think you understand that. I said, better option is Linux + WINE and as far as Steam goes 80% of games written for Windows run fine. fine, WINE is a compatibility wrapper. It's still written by an open-source community to "emulate" win32 libraries. It's come a long way over the years but still has issues with various apps because it's not actually written by microsoft because the library files are closed source. It can in no way be compared to this containerized support. A closer comparison would be to running programs on a normal windows setup in sandboxy. There should be very little performance difference if any on an x86/x64 intel/amd CPU. Brandon, The point is that Windows 10x is DOA and based on all the hints coming from Microsoft and their vision of Windows, Windows 10 has no future as well. Microsoft just continues being hostile toward Win32 and the writing against their stupidity is all over the wall for the past five years. They're so hostile to win32 that they're fully supporting it on 10X, ok there man. Having it be in a container and isolated from the core OS is what many people have wanted to see for 10+ years from Windows apps. This is the best way forward for Win32 and the Windows OS as a whole. You don't see it, or just want to hate on it because you have another personal agenda you're trying to push on others.4 points -

It’s unbelievable how far Microsoft has fallen in quality. You’d think any patch would receive proper scrutiny, let alone the last update an OS would ever receive. Yup. MS should have implemented this a looong time ago. Like with Windows Vista ago. They already did it's called Windows Sandbox. The article makes a inaccurate comparison, this container feature is more like Windows Sandbox, than Windows Subsystem on Linux. I don't blame the author for getting this wrong, since Mary Jo Foley herself, made the incorrect comparison.2 points -

I DID read the article but it is kind of confusing as it says "In addition to updates for every supported version of Windows 10, there's also a couple of updates for older releases" With as many editions of Windows 10 as there are, who the heck can keep up with that crap?! That line I quoted almost makes it sound like they dropped a couple patches for older versions of Windows 10 being that it's all in one sentence. Was simply asking for some clarification.2 points -

Comcast data cap issues

IP? doubt it - I would think they track this by their device mac.. Since they could hand out different IPs all the time - if you talking IPv6 it could be huge amount of IPs in their assigned prefix, etc.. And IPv4 even could change all the time - depending! If the OP is saying they don't do anything that would account for such usage - I would guess its mistake, as others have stated. Its not like they have not made huge mistakes in the past.. That they don't provide you with a day to day, or even hour to hour breakdown.. And ports being used.. Yeah its BS.. If your isp is going to set some cap on your usage - it for sure behooves you to do your own accounting. So you have something to compare with.. If you don't and they say you did X.. You have no real way to say no I didn't my system shows Y. Especially if they are not going to give you some breakdown on days/hours/ports... He might have a kid or something doing p2p that he is not aware of, or misbehaving device or application. Or sure someone on his wifi doing whatever.. But since he has no local accounting of what his router did, then he has no grounds to stand on to say, hey my system shows I used X vs Y.. Its really no different than the water or electric company - when the electric company says you use X kwh, how do you say no I didn't I use only Y.. Shoot even the elec company these days give you a day/hour breakdown of what you are using.. How is it that a company that deals with moving packets, can't show you the details - and only give yous a lump some "monthly" total? If they are going to charge you for going over X per month.. they should be able to show exactly what you did and how you did it (what ports) And if you want to get picky about it to where.. You downloaded or uploaded X bytes to this IP on this port, etc.. I mean if they are going to charge you for it, why can they not show you what you did? I would think if you want to fight it you could take them to court and say prove I did this.. Show me the traffic reports where I move MBps to here, and grabbed X KB from there, etc. etc.. But you really should have something locally showing you what you did.. While I don't detail logging, I could if wanted/needed get more granular.. I have a lots of details of what amount of traffic my router moved.. And can even show that on an hour to hour basis.. So if my ISP said I moved X, over this period - I could show, no I only moved Y and here is the breakdown hour by hour, etc..2 points -

DaveSharp and one other reacted to 0suds8kski for a topic
They are doing this on purpose. Ever since Windows 10 launched in 2015, they've been releasing updates for Windows 7 that decreased its performance and made it worse. If everyone is planning on staying with Windows 7 or plans to install it anew, I'd advise them to find an ISO with updates up to 2016 and completely disable updates after installing it. Before Microsoft did that, Windows 7 worked better. This is all part of their plan to make Windows 7 users think that their OS is failing and to force them to update to Windows 10. Microsoft are scumbags. Maybe bigger scumbags than Google and Mozilla.2 points -

Here's what's new for Windows 8.1 this Patch Tuesday
waysidesc reacted to domboy for a topic
Really?? I thought Windows 8 was the OS that didn't know what it wanted to be? A Desktop OS or a Tablet OS, I can't decide! How times have changed. I remember 8/8.1 got a LOT of bashing on this site, and now people like it? That's crazy. To be honest I didn't mind it personally, at least on a tablet (I have a first gen Surface RT), though I never really used it on a desktop. But sometimes the disconnect between the start screen and the desktop is weird. I ended up spending most of the time on the desktop (granted I used a lot of the open-source desktop apps compiled for ARM vs store apps). Thankfully Windows 10's tablet mode is so better. The switch is seamless, and both modes are visually similar so it doesn't seem like it has a split personality like 8 does. And I especially don't like how they handled Windows on ARM with the intentionally hamstrung Windows RT. Again, Windows 10 ARM Edition rectifies most of those mistakes. I do not miss the Windows 8/RT vision.1 point -

Office in a nutshell: The installation changes file systems, also it adds stuff to the system folder, to the registry (outside of the software folder) and install more stuff, the it creates more service, plus it adds schedule and startup tasks. Also, it adds an add-ins for internet explorer. win32 apps according Microsoft: No, you can't because your application is too intrusive. DAFUNK! Microsoft is (again) playing the game of "I can but you can!". Why UWP failed? Simple, because the whole container nonsense. If you want a container, then browse a website!. And it is the same bull-💩 of Modern Application. I forget that Office was the only application "free of rules" that was able to runs without restriction in Windows RT.1 point -

How do people in the 'technology' community that hate progress exist? There wouldn't be anything more than receipt paper and maybe a few punch cards everyone got stuck on old technology. FFS1 point -

Firefox 73.0
kopsarchidis reacted to cork1958 for a topic
"Firefox has been my browser of choice for nearly 2 years now" Hell, it's been pretty much the all around best browser since it's initial release. It WAS the best. Before they decided to ruin it twice. Once with version 4.0 and once with Quantum. Firefox went from 32% market share to 4% in 10 years. In another 10 it won't even exist if they keep ruining it. What they aren't telling you is that Chrome counts in the installs on mobile phones too. It comes pre-installed and set as default browser to these without any consent. This is why chrome ranks high. Why do you say it is ruined. Currently it is the best browser in town. Enjoy it while it is still an option and support it before others eventually own your internet and your opinion on it. 1. In version 4.0 they started chasing Chrome's tabs on top GUI layout and bloated their whole browser to the point where it was unusable for at least a year and a half. 2. In version Quantum they removed the old add-ons and limited even more the way you can customize the browser. So many websites don't work properly in Firefox. If I want to download something from Mega and I use Firefox, I have to download another browser for that. Firefox' shortcomings and limitations increase every day. In comparison to what it was back in 2009 with version 3.6, Firefox is now hundreds time worse. It just desperately tags along Chromium-based browsers, it's hardly "the best". Haven't ever had a single issue using Firefox on any site, myself. What is that Mega site you mention? Are you talking about this site, https://mega.nz/login ? I don't have any issues with that site either. I don't like it, but don't have issues. FWIW, not getting this new version when manually checking for updates.1 point -
