  2. This is honestly something Apple needs to fix. I understand taking a cut on in-app purchases made on their platform. But subscriptions such as Netflix, YouTube and so on, that really have nothing to do with Apple, should not give a monthly credit to them for the life of the account. To me, it would be fair to take a cut off the first month, but not going forward.

  6. Why so much Google junk dependency in the news comment section?

Locking Thread I think this thread has run its course. We at neowin do not condone Ad or Script blocking. We can't stop you if you choose to do so, but if things on the site break in the process then we will not be able to assist you to get around that. As stated, Neowin uses CDN resources from Google for many of its live scripts to function in a simple manor.

  7. Why so much Google junk dependency in the news comment section?

What I find amusing about all this is that it's being made out that it's just Neowin that has become completely broken with these blockages. As has been pointed out, there are going to be plenty of other places that suffer similar issues. I find my opinion on this is much the same as when people report that the site isn't working correctly when they have their adblocker active. If you want to block such things then that's fine, Neowin cannot stop you. But you can't complain that the site is broken when you are the one breaking it for yourself...

  14. Yay or nay? Made an app that adds Aero Glass, Start Menu on Windows 10

What the title says. I got sick and tired of the included Windows 10 theme, and the slow Start Screen. Now I think it looks perfect. Why make my own? I know there's Window Blinds which is incredibly slow (it uses GDI instead of HW-accelerated Direct2D), doesn't even have blur behind the glass and there's also Glass8 (I think that's what it's called?) but is exceptionally hacky and, I would say, shady. My implementation is not perfect, but it doesn't add a single line of low-level rendering code, doesn't break any application (so far) and it's all (theme+start menu) contained into a single library. On the other hand, it's largely unoptimized, thus DWM memory consumption increased to about 70mb (still nothing compared to most apps). There's some work ahead before I can even release an installer but it can be done if a good amount of people is even interested. Using the flat built in Windows 10 theme:

  21. This does not have the same type of dual screen. It does not fold, but is in fact two separate screens. Also, based on the MS track record I suspect it will be kept up to date with timely updates/patches. I am actually looking forward to a version of Android that comes "de-Googled" to the extent possible. Similar to what MS did with the new Edge.

  25. First of all BETA and hopefully GA making replacement of default cmd in Windows? When?, Windows Terminal won't replace cmd.exe for two reasons. First because cmd.exe is already considered complete and required for legacy compatibility, so it won't be changing or disappearing for the foreseeable future. Second, because Windows Terminal is a console/terminal, not a shell. These are completely different and complementary pieces of software. CUI apps runs connected to a console or terminal to show their inputs/outputs, you need both. So cmd.exe can run connected to the Windows Terminal, just like conhost.exe (the legacy console) can be used to interact with any CUI app besides cmd.exe. As for when, Windows Terminal v1.0 is planned to be delivered by spring 2020. As for replacing conhost (legacy console), that won't happen for a few decades probably, at best conhost will be available only within the Win32 compatibility container in Win10X and removed from the core OS.

  27. Valve's VR exclusive Half-Life: Alyx releases on March 23

But why? Because it is a prequel? No, because they're trying to force expensive hardware on us, after we've already spent a lot on our PCs. And back in the day people "Oh, why do I need to buy a graphics card to play games? It worked just fine until now!" Also Quest, if you can find one, is very, very cheap. £400 + £40 for the game. It's not cheap, especially considering the Quest is a only a mid-range VR headset.

  37. Why so much Google junk dependency in the news comment section?

The short answer is that we can't afford to do everything ourselves on the income we get from running this site so we offset some services that Google provide for "free". But rest assured everything we load into pages is required for one reason or another, and we also work hard at ensuring fast loading pages where we can. I think you will come across this problem on most commercial sites though, it isn't limited to Neowin. We are enrolled at Brave and Scroll too which modify our pages for their own purposes (I don't like it, but what you gonna do?) and we have a subscription ($28/year) that strips all ad/tracking content from the whole site. There are options, but we need to keep the lights on for a number of people too

  44. Hands on with the Windows 10X emulator

Except this one has both the user experience optimized for tablets and the compatibility with Win32 apps back to Windows 95, which Windows RT didn't have. The goal isn't just to make dual screen devices, that's just the justification for this OS differences as it isn't ready to replace Win10 Pro on desktops at this point. But the long term plan is clearly to build the next Windows, and instead of breaking compatibility and starting over again, this time they include everything. Windows 10X currently supports containers for backward compatibility with Win32 and MSIX-contained Win32 apps, but it's easy to see the possibilities... we're getting a lightweight and efficient modern OS built for WinRT, which can bring up compatibility containers for Win32 at the moment, but which is based on the same architecture as the Linux WSL2 container on desktops, and - why not - an Android container based off it as well. A single OS that can technically run WinRT, Win32, Linux and Android apps consistently. And on top of that, the UI could adapt when connected to external monitor + mouse + keyboard to turn it into a full Windows + Linux desktop. I'd rather run Linux and use Wine to run Win32 apps I need than having this abomination of Windows running its native apps in container which does not guarantee performance and also strips off user of the experience which made Windows - Windows. Making Win32 second class citizen is not going to work, clearly MS. does not understand their Windows user base. Having said that, whatever vision they have for the future, and you are right there saying Windows 10x is what they are planning on the long term, won't last. They are going to lose people to Linux at much faster rate than having Windows user base accepting this baloney. After all, 500 millions of people are still sitting in Windows 7 after 5+ years of jerking with Windows 10 which is garbage as well. If I wanted Linux experience in Windows, I go and I turn my Linux machine on to have that experience. This baloney run all in one is just baloney and waste of everyone time. Except they are not second class citizens. Your win32 apps run natively without a hit to performance (except for a tiny delay when you open a Win32 app without any others open and that’s because the system is loading the legacy Windows backend when you open a legacy Win32 app without others being open). Plus you get the benefits of not having rogue or buggy Win32 apps getting access to the native system registry since they are in containers. And when you are done running a Win32 program or when the program is idle and minimized the system either offloads the legacy backend or suspends it respectively. Also, there are already different containerization and compatibility technologies already inside Windows serving different purposes. UWP apps are inherently containerized for security and performance reasons. On 64 bit x86 systems and ARM systems, 32 bit Win32 apps are already run in a semi-containerized compatibility mode using WOW64. And there are numerous sand boxing technologies for Win32 apps already being used. So containerization is nothing new for Windows. I am really not sure why you are complaining about something that lets you run your apps in a more secure manner, with little hit to performance, and with optimizations that should yield better battery life and less resource usage when your legacy Win32 apps are closed or idle and minimized. Even the tiny launch delay, should be < 1s. We are already at the full Linux subsystem (WSL2) booting in <1s on Windows, and it has extra application and kernel states. Booting the Win32 subsystem (container) should be even more effortless and faster than WSL2 runs now on low end devices. (Anyone getting into testing, the 10x emulator is really slow, so don't take any performance or stability cues from it.)

Tinfoil hat on there pretty tight there. Ajax frameworks is probably why you can't do anything... google what Ajax is if you want to know why, but it's basically scripting that any site uses nowadays, Google just happens to have some nice packages that provide a good base to build off. Google scraping what fonts your browser renders and frameworks to generate the look and feel of a page? Shock. Horror. You'll probably have half the internet broken for you which such an encompassing block.

google provides more than analytics; they provide live updating directories for web developers for fonts, APIs, jquery libraries ect. ajax is part of jquery and it's essential to many of this site's live scripts such as FPN comments section and the mini-spy none of those listed in your post are analytics they are those that I mentioned by blocking all of google you're blocking more than just ads and analytics
