  1. Not nice! If one has no need for synching, cloud computing, and all sorts of other folderol, why the desire or need to require a MS account? It smacks of needless complexity for users who just need a simple to use OS that is reliable, stable, and gets the job done running applications.

  2. Tesla allowed to cut down trees for fourth gigafactory

Seems the only reason the court ordered Tesla to pause was so that the complaint could be processed. The forest in question was planted specifically for being harvested, it was not a naturally occurring forest.

  4. In what way is this different from Apple forcing the same thing for iOS or macOS devices (or Google doing the same thing for Android devices)? Basically, it isn't.

  5. Microsoft provides more insight into the new Windows 10 icons

Tiles aren't that great, but I check the weather there and also use the news live tile. I hope Microsoft doesn't get rid of them interely. Just have an option to alternate between "normal" icon and tile.

  6. They have been trying to do away with the ability to use local accounts for years now and I'm sure it won't be long until they finally do it. I'm done with Microsoft. I've never liked Windows 10 or their bullying practices and this is the final straw. I've found that Linux is a perfectly fine operating system and has been for a long time now. Unless you're a heavy gamer or your job requires you to there's not many reasons to use Windows anymore.

  7. Dumb move. You already have to jump through hoops to get a local account, most casual users will be using online accounts so why annoy the small percentage that want local accounts.

  8. This is BS. The more MS becomes Apple the more I want a different OS all together. If I wanted Apple, I would have bought Apple. I went MS because they weren't Apple. With each move like this there's less and less reason to stay with MS.

  9. I have 5 systems and I don't want to use a MS account on them at all. I don't want anything shared or synced. This is just a hassle for a person that jumps around and tests stuff a lot to have to go through that then manually change it after the fact

  10. I'm not sure about macOS, but I believe Google and Apple have always required accounts for phone devices. The issue here is that MS is removing functionality for no reason other than business purposes. It's interesting that this change will only ###### people off. I don't see anyone saying this is a good thing. Another reason this is a bad idea is now this will be a huge hassle if you're trying to create a virtual machine or just install a copy for testing purposes.

  13. Windows 10's colorful app icons are finally showing up for Insiders

Check out %SystemRoot%\System32\moricons.dll if you want icons from Windows 3.x and for MS-DOS apps, untouched since the good old CGA days.

  14. Anyone remember when you could just easily chose whatever the hell you wanted when installing Windows? Now you have to “trick” the operating system in order to gain some control. A damn shame what has happened to my beloved Windows. Just embarrassing.

Neither Google or Apple require accounts for their devices. You can bypass both logins during the initial OOBE.

  21. There are no better icons than icons in Vista far superior to anything we have in Windows 7 let alone garbage called Windows 10. Windows Vista is the most consistent OS ever created, from UI point of view. Let's not even go there, after 5 years Windows 10 UI is a complete joke.

  23. Not sure why anyone would be interested in a Samsung which costs 1k + and gives around 1.5 years of support! And not to mention all the bloatware which just hogs down the whole android experience!

  24. Oh please, move to Linux. Go ahead. People like you complain and "threaten" Microsoft with moving to Linux all the time. They very rarely do. When Windows 10 came out tons of people said "I'm moving to Linux" and "When Windows 7 is EOL I'm moving to Linux". Not many of them did so. Well, count me as one of the people who has I guess. I was a Microsoft cheerleader for years. Started a job where I was given a Mac, coincidentally about the same time Windows 10 released and was causing me problems on my home machines. Now I run Debian everywhere with a Windows VM for the single app I haven't found an equivalent for. I won't even run MS Office on any platform anymore, since most of my usage is spreadsheets and Libre Office fxxks with the data a lot less than Excel and makes my life so much easier. For the record I loved Windows 8, totally onboard with that. They screwed the pooch with 10, and it's hardly gotten better since the first year when it repeatedly force installed a broken driver on my main machine. I don't miss it. At all.

  27. I noticed the same thing a while back. However, I found if you click "sign in with my Microsoft account" and type in a gibberish fake email it will give an error and then allow you to create a local account.

  28. Wrong. You can install one of the *several* alternative app stores on Android and never have to use a Google account at all.

  29. I can confirm this is a thing in Italy as I just installed windows 10 and had no option to use a local account (I didn't test disconnecting from the Internet). However I did just use a dummy email and it did not require me to authorise the email first so i then just converted the account to a local account after installation.

  30. MS have been doing it since the last major update in the UK, but only for the home edition, I presume in other countries it is only for the home edition of Windows 10, still do not make it right. I do not have a MS account and have no intention of getting one.

  31. The best way to avoid this is when you begin a Windows 10 installation, you should unplug your computer from the internet and when the prompt for account creation comes, it will allow you to create a local account, that's what I've been doing for a while now. Another benefit is if you remain unplugged from the internet after the install, some bullcrap apps that try to download on its own won't be able to and you can select "Unisntall" on them so they never download and make your Bloatware Windows 10 even more of a Bloatware.

  35. I'd miss being able to customize my home screen but Apple has come a long way in a lot of other areas in iOS. Honestly?? It's overrated dude. I thought I'd miss the hell out of it too, but like you were talking about issues with Samsung performance, the one thing that put me off to no end was factory resetting my phone to get some performance back... only to spend the day re-customizing everything, and spending an hour wondering what last touch I was missing because it felt "almost perfect". Working IT, I just don't have time for it anymore. Reliability counts, as does not being locked out of an update because the manufacturer won't make profit supporting one more year. Cost is relative to how long you plan to keep your device anyway. Pick what you like though foreal, I'd rather you be happy than not. Just giving my take.

  45. Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) 4 beta images available now

Might have to try this distro out one of these days. I liked Debian when I used it a while back. Was definitely stable, which I Iike, and pretty simple to use, which I like even more.

  46. Big deal. MS persuades people to use their software with notifications as well. And this is not limited to MS or Google. Lots of companies put out ads and such to persuade people to use their products over the competitors. So a non issue really and users get to decide still in the end.

  47. I hope this doesn't become a thing as it might force me to Linux, last time I used the account, it made a right mess of my windows setup and I couldn't fix it so I just didn't bother with the account. Mind you, with any luck and a new PC set up years later, it likely will be a new licence so might not be a issue then.

  49. Apps have been able to link to other apps bypassing defaults, but they have be explicitly enabled in most app options. I.e if you have chrome installed, the Outlook app will ask if you either want to use Safari or Chrome to open pages from email links. Same with Maps. So while defaults have been locked down, if you use third party apps, it's less of a problem. Glad Apple is finally doing this though, it'd be nice to use native apps and have an option.
