Anyone pronouncing it with a soft G should walk out the nearest window. Yeah, that all makes logical sense. But the problem here is that some random site claims to be an authority on the matter. I wouldn't call the biggest gif website / search index / API on the internet "some random site." Either way, it's a fun marketing campaign, not a serious proclamation. But it's a hard G.2 points -

So GIPHY which started in 2013 is now being the end all to the name pronounciation of GIF?When the image format came out in 1987 the creators pronounced it JIF not GIF... I'd rather go by what they said back then To quote the CREATOR: Steve Wilhite, who invented the Gif file in 1987, told the New York Times that the word is pronounced “jif” not “giff”. “The Oxford English Dictionary accepts both pronunciations. They are wrong. It is a soft 'G,' pronounced 'jif.2 points -
Samsung starts mass production of 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM package for premium smartphones
dead.cell and one other reacted to George P for a topic
Having so much ram on a smartphone, 16GB, is just a waste. I'm sorry but people are not using these things with some sort of dock and turning them into laptops or psudo-desktops. Mobile games don't need so much ram, and no one is using beefy desktop class apps to do work on their smartphone. I get that OEMs need more so they can hit you with another buzz word o try and upsell you a new phone that will cost more than the one you bought before but we should be working on better and longer lasting battery tech, instead they're making phones bigger just so they can fit a bigger battery inside.2 points -

Stardock announces SoundPackager 10, lets you customize the Windows sound scheme
Angel Blue01 reacted to MS Bob 11 for a topic
Instead of more sound packs, I have been forever requesting them to add more sound events to Windows. As in intercept various events that happen in Windows e.g. file copying finished, or specific program opened or closed, windows snapped, input language switched, wifi connected/disconnected, AC power vs battery, something copied to clipboard etc. Windows sound events have hardly changed since Windows 95 and a few added in 2000/XP/Vista.1 point -

Firefox DNS over HTTPS rollout begins in the U.S.
timster reacted to neufuse for a topic
The DNS traffic is encrypted between you and the DNS provider. is that even necessary just for name translation traffic? I can think of better things to worry about encryption with ... stops foreign actors and bad actors from watching and logging or intercepting your site requests... think of a country that likes to control what sites you can go to, this makes it hard for them to figure out if it's DNS traffic or HTTP traffic compared to just listening on port 53 to see what you are doing1 point -

Right now DoH and ESNI are in baby walker. There is no interoperability between various hosting services. If you are trying to access a blocked site, after enabling DoH and ESNI in firefox, it should match with hoster to remove the block. Example if you are using Cloudflare’s DoH and ESNI in firefox, it will only unblock any website which is hosted on cloudflare. Otherwise the block stays.1 point -

Lucky for you too. Games run fine, but getting around the dashboard on my system is an abysmal experience. My Dashboard is also abysmal—on a One X and gigabit connection. It feels jerky and things get stuck loading all the time, the store being the biggest issue. Are you talking about this new one or the current old one? Maybe it's time for a clean reboot of the system and not just suspend/sleep which is what it's set to usually do. See of it changes anything.1 point -

Here's what's new for Windows 8.1 this Patch Tuesday
domboy reacted to waysidesc for a topic
Really?? I thought Windows 8 was the OS that didn't know what it wanted to be? A Desktop OS or a Tablet OS, I can't decide! How times have changed. I remember 8/8.1 got a LOT of bashing on this site, and now people like it? That's crazy. To be honest I didn't mind it personally, at least on a tablet (I have a first gen Surface RT), though I never really used it on a desktop. But sometimes the disconnect between the start screen and the desktop is weird. I ended up spending most of the time on the desktop (granted I used a lot of the open-source desktop apps compiled for ARM vs store apps). Thankfully Windows 10's tablet mode is so better. The switch is seamless, and both modes are visually similar so it doesn't seem like it has a split personality like 8 does. And I especially don't like how they handled Windows on ARM with the intentionally hamstrung Windows RT. Again, Windows 10 ARM Edition rectifies most of those mistakes. I do not miss the Windows 8/RT vision. am sorry for late reply. Windows 8 absolutely knew what it wanted to be; it could (and did) decide. the goal was to have no compromises if on either a desktop or a tablet. both paradigms (Desktop and Metro) existed. the goal was to be all things to all people. Windows finally had a platform, a purpose, a vision for devices other than desktops instead of most of the undertakings of previous versions which were hodgepodge nightmares slapped on top of the existing desktop (Windows 7 multitouch apps almost come to mind). bandaids on top of that user interaction dichotomy. (on that subject it makes me so frustrated that so-called journalists either would be completely ignorant or just outright lie about microsoft's vision (such that Windows 8.1 was a step to supplant the desktop) when the company said before that; 'We do not view the desktop as a mode, legacy or otherwise—it is simply a paradigm for working that suits some people and specific apps.') and... no; no; NO! the tablet mode in windows 10 is garbage compared to Windows 8.1! it has not even received a major update in over five years! the only visual similarity is that windows 10 tablet mode can show the desktop over tablet mode (as can Windows 8.1)... and it shows the taskbar (Windows 8.1 'Update 1' does this, but only temporarily). i don't understand why you write that Windows 8 had a split personality... there was even a later effort to differentiate and segregate desktop applications within its app listings. here's another thing that not even so-called tablet mode can do! you can only ever snap two apps at a time in windows 10! In Windows 8.1 it is possible to snap four! no; it is windows 10 that is Frankenstein's monster. just look at the strange juxtapositions of interface design involving that operating system: it has a tablet mode that receives no updates, it has apps (and app guidelines!) with interfaces (examples include hamburger menus and live tiles) designed for optimizations involving a phone operating system that no longer is. the very desktop that people did not want to be touched by Metro...has now been touched by Frankenstein's monster! there are even two completely different kinds of context menu now on that very desktop! it is almost as though there is an implied admission with this failure with the release of Windows 10X and its associated interface design alterations! it is replete with services that are fragile (its search backend that prevented local matches), pointless especially in regions outside of United States (Cortana), or that are shuttered so shortly after their establishment (Mixer or Remix 3D). it has issues----potentially significant----issues with each update that stink to high heaven. there are decisions that are backtracked (Game Bar features) or removed (Disk Cleanup option for Downloads folder).1 point -
