Why new laptops ship with old drivers?
+hedleigh reacted to goretsky for a topic
Hello, Generally speaking, laptops are going to ship with whatever the manufacturer has determined to be compatible, working software on them (device drivers, manufacturer and machine-specific software, etc.). If the manufacturer provides some sort of system-specific update software (I know Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Lenovo do, and probably others as well), then running that to get the latest drivers and software should work. You can also try using Windows Update to download drivers, or visiting the silicon vendor's support site (AMD, Intel, Nvidia, Realtek, etc.) to see what sort of device drivers they offer. One thing to keep in mind is that drivers from the latter tend not to update (or even disable) and manufacturer-specific customizations. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky1 point -

The flu is more dangerous, how exactly? One of the issues with comparing something to "flu" is that there are a bunch of flu virus strains floating around, and whatever strain ends up being prevalent during a given year can vary quite a bit in severity. I think the generalization here is that due to the sheer number of people infected annually, flu kills more during a normal year than the cov-19 virus has ever. Some strains that have gained notoriety such as the 1918 strain, or the 2009 strain were particularly deadly. One of the issues with letting a novel virus spread among large human populations is that many viruses constantly mutate and can recombine with other strains. This is a common way for viruses to leap species: picking up a gene that allows efficient entry into, or replication within human cells. Given a large enough pool of individuals to replicate within, natural selection can take place and breed in favor of even more virulent strains, which then amplifies the problem further. This is true the Flu has infected and killed more. But lets look back at the following: 1. Covid-19 was discovered in December 31, 2019 and has a mortality rate that is 2-3%. Confirmed infections are already above 100 thousand. The Flu has infected more but on average the mortality rate is 0.1% and there is a vaccine to help with it some. 2. The more we let it spread and not try to slow Covid-19 down, the larger chance that it gains the same foothold the Flu has. I mean, the math says it all. Instead of the deaths being 10s of thousands per year, it will be millions. Does the Flu still sound more dangerous? in 1918 the flu had a 3.5% mortality rate... difference now is we have treatments for it so technically the flu is worse, but we can treat it better.. the flu is estimated to have between a 2 and 5% mortality rate with zero treatment or preventative care, and that is a fact. Covid-19 has similar mortality rates, WITH current treatment and preventative care. So again, please answer the question. How is the Flu deadlier? If it spreads as much as the Flu has and there is no successful treatment to lower mortality rates, it will kill millions per year, not thousands. That’s a fact too in as much as your “fact” is. I'm just stating recorded facts that the flu before we had treatments for it had a higher mortality rate then we are currently experiencing with this one. To me to compare a virus or disease you have to compare it at the natural level, that's the only way to give a true mortality comparison, and that tells us how deadly the disease is in it's natural state to humans... Flu around 3.5% to COVID-19 around 3.2 to 3.75% (WHO says 3.4%) but that is all pointless also, that's just a mean... we need age comparisons (of which we don't have from back in the pre flu treatment days, so here is current just to get some data out there) between the both... your chance of dieing under the age of 59 with Corona is less then 1.3% (under 49 it's less then 0.4%) flu it's 1.69%... over 59 COVID-19 is as high as 14.8% over 80ys which is different then the flu at 1.4%... so in the end if you are young and healthy you have more a change or similar chance of dieing from the flu or corona... the bid difference is once you get to 70+ then COVID-19 takes over in death rates... but those of course are all with treatment on the flu end and just managing symptoms on the corona end.. Washington state is a prime example of how deadly it can be to the elderly. Imagine everyone losing their parents or grandparents because of a "flu". The elderly already take a bolstered flu shot as it is (for those who are responsible anyway), now just imagine having no shot to take at all. We also don't know whether this virus will taper off as it warms up, meaning it could very well be year 'round. Either way, the point is not to take any of this lightly. Just because there are X amount of deaths from influenza, heart disease, etc. doesn't mean we can't be cautious, especially for anyone who again has family members that are elderly (which is just about everyone). Same with people who have problems with their immune system or other complications for that matter.1 point -
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary PC review: Best way to experience the classic
Geezy reacted to DentedAphid7 for a topic
Only if you care about the story. At the time it was novel but right now it feels very old. Having to collect health packs, the areas feel small and limited by today's standards, not much to do other than arcade shooting action, and the story is very campy. It's a big nostalgia trip if you're into that. I wonder if anyone is sticking with the multiplayer though, that might be fun to check out the maps again but man does it look old and basic. Haha I played Halo since OG xbox and play every version there is to it, so yeah. But in terms of MP, it's still fun. Halo Reach had some of the MP levels "remastered", but I still want to enjoy the old OG version.1 point -

Please help me identify what system partitions to delete
goretsky reacted to Brandon H for a question
I agree with @adrynalyne here. It looks like a couple partitions got duplicated or something. That's more than the usual. Deleting a partition won't do you any good either as the Windows Disk management doesn't have a good way to re-expand the other partitions once you delete one so that space will remain unused unless you just put a partition back and assign another drive letter. If you haven't installed much yet or don't mind starting over I'd also suggest booting back into your Windows Install media, deleting all partitions when prompted, and letting the installer re-partition the drive as it sees fit. Usually it will only create 1 recovery partition, 1 EFI pertition (if UEFI BIOS), and the rest of the drive will be free use as the C drive.1 point -
Why new laptops ship with old drivers?
+primortal reacted to Brandon H for a topic
There's a couple reasons a new laptop could have older drivers. OEMs don't update their base image that they flash too frequently. The laptops/towers also sit in a warehouse longer than you'd think as well. Some drivers update rather frequently so it's not hard to think how a machine sitting in a warehouse or on the shelf unused would quickly have drivers go out of date. Most of the time there's no issue with this as most of the updates are minor or fix very specific things. I agree for the most part with the rest of the people in this thread as well; most driver utilities suck and don't do their job properly. There's ONE utility I've found that actually does things right for driver scans and updates, and that's IObit Driver Booster. No need to pay for the PRO version, the basic version scans critical drivers and shows which ones have new versions and allows you to install them 1 by 1. I have not had any issue using this on my laptop since I got it a few months ago. The same can't be said for other driver scanners.1 point -

Why new laptops ship with old drivers?
goretsky reacted to adrynalyne for a topic
Driver utilities are the worst thing ever. They look for any file that has an older date without knowing what or why. Did you actually visually inspect these drivers in device manager to confirm it? Who was the provider? The devices? Not all files get updated regularly because they are at stable, working versions. Driver utilities don’t care who the source of the newer file is, they will run with it. Even if it’s not designed or known to work with your machine.1 point -

Tesla blames supply chain issue for delivering Model 3 without self-driving computer
dontbeevil reacted to +mram for a topic
This is a little misleading, what is noticeably absent from this article (but reflected heavily elsewhere): “HW2.5 and HW3.0 are virtually the same for owners who did not purchase additional FSD service.” It's unclear whether customers who actually purchased FSD (full self driving) are getting HW2.5, but this basically mirrors the behavior of Tesla domestically as well - U.S. customers are still (sometimes) getting 2.5 hardware unless they specifically purchased FSD at build time. This isn't a bad thing. It just saves Tesla from having to retro-fit the hardware when and if it is purchased after the fact. In other words, a newer/better part does not mean any loss of features, functionality, or performance of the car as it is delivered.1 point -
