There is a lot attached to the WDDM 2.7 and DX12 features in general in this release. This is the first build to include several kernel level updates in a few years, and this also allows for these new features to work or work better. Look for things like DXR 2, AI/WinML features, lower refresh latency, along with new and existing features from the XBox One/Series X super-set of DirectX12. This adds in the newer versions of adaptive resolutions, scaling, sampling locations, and FPS stabilization. This is good for professional PC Gamers, as one thing the XBox and DX12 in general has done better is having fewer FPS dumps via the framework and the NT kernel managing the CPU and GPU cores for thermal loads better than Vulkan and the PS4 can. One specific - DXR - Ray Tracing previously was designed around a few basic rendering concepts with AI targeting zero performance loss at 60fps - which it does well on the current RT enabled games. The problem was timing as it was debuting at a time when many gamers were moving on to 120-240fps gaming, and thus 60fps DXR Ray Tracing isn't enough. DXR 2.0 targets higher fps Ray Tracing and new render variations with even bi-directional paths for better caustics and FPS targeted optimizations to use the higher refresh rates to get better RT results. I know a lot of people are not DXR/RT fans (especially with the BS from NVidia trying to con people into believing it is their technology). However, for game visual quality to move forward, we need EASIER and more accurate lighting, and we are at the point that some variation of Ray Tracing (Path/Branch/etc) is the only way forward. A good RT'd scene at 1080p can look 100x better than a 4K or 8K image - pixels do not equal higher quality when the current lighting and textures look fake/false. I wish some site would do a deep dive on WDDM 2.7 and DXR 2.0 and the other new GPU/Kernel features in 20H1. I was noticing the other day, that really cool features like multi-GPU rendering features are often not noticed or referenced by the people in the industry that follow games and graphic technologies. One developer from a major AAA game didn't even realize the game on DX12 seamlessly would use several GPUS, with Windows 10/DX12 SMP GPU rendering features that are essentially automatic.4 points -

Classic Neowin thread in the making. Is your router ancient? If you bought one in the last decade, and spent more than 20 bucks on it, it’s probably a 1 gig interface already. Or better yet, stop being ridiculous and post the make and model of your router so we can confirm whether or not your wan and network ports are rated 100mbit or 1gig. Is 55mbit worth it? On a 155mbit connection, absolutely2 points -

Mindovermaster and one other reacted to Jim K for a topic
"155 Mbps speed for $20 less per month" If the sole reason was the $20 less per month ... and you are satisfied with your internet then no. Of course, if this is some promotional deal where your cost will go up in x months ... then at that time it may be worth looking at getting a faster router or going back to whatever speed you had prior to the deal. The reason folks are asking for the brand/model is to verify its capabilities (vs. some other issue) ... not to insult you.2 points -

You said you upgraded your internet speed from 100 to 150, discovered that your router was only capable of 100 and then wanted to know if buying a faster router was worth it. I would think since you did decide to upgrade the speed it would make sense to upgrade your router to use the speed available. So yes it's worth the expense as long as it is what YOU want. We do not know your financial situation or anything else. Also our questions about the brand and model of the router was to verify its capabilities. We were answering your questions by trying to get more information to better inform you. But since you think we're bullies, perhaps you should take your rude self somewhere else. There is a lot attached to the WDDM 2.7 and DX12 features in general in this release. ... This is a GREAT post! The WSL improvements mean that you can actually use it for Android ROM building (which was not the case for the original WSL), which means greater capabilities for low-storage hardware builds (WSL 2 means that Linux and Windows 10 use the same partition). Also, unlike the original WSL, it only requires paravirtualization (hardware virtualization), not Hyper-V; I can state that categorically because that is a feature I have been concentrating on in my testing of WSL 2. Right now, I am trying to decide what Linux distribution is best suited for WSL 2-based ROM building between openSuSE and Kubuntu (I have always preferred KDE to GNOME on the Linux side of things - and both are directly supported by WSL 2). WSL1 doesn't need or use any Virtualization, WSL2 is a Hyper-V VM. The management is simply done for you and it will be available in Home versions of Windows 102 points -

Finally got around to read the whole article. And I can understand making a little profit, but he was selling hand sanitizer for $70. And then claims he was not price gouging because the costs includes his labor and shipping.....what an idiot. I bet it is really hard to drive to stores and buy things. And my 3 year old grandniece can put a product in a box, slap a label on it, and call UPS for pickup. No no real labor cost there. And depending on shipping method and quantity, $10 is a little high. Believe ground shipping is a few bucks or a little more. But I have not looked. But anyway.....Serves him right and I hope he and other get charged for price gouging. Selfish and immoral thing to do and the fact he doesn't think he was doing anything wrong.....hope his kids grow up better. Glad Amazon and eBay finally took action against it. And keeping these things banned going forward, will make it harder for these selfish ###### to do things.2 points -

Is it worth buying a new router for faster internet speed?
timster reacted to +Warwagon for a topic
When going from 100 to 155, it really boils down to what you use your internet for. If all you do is stream video, browse the web, look at Facebook and watch youtube, then 100 megs should be plenty. If you are constantly downloading large files from the internet, then the 55 meg will upgrade reduce the time it takes to do so. If you know for a fact your router only does 100 megs, that means you have a really really really old router and if you want those shorter download times by switching to 155 megs, then yes you will have to upgrade your router, which everyone that may be. I'm sure you are aware that any device you will be hardwiring to a new router would also have to be able to do more than 100 megs. Ethernet wise you would have to have some pretty old gear if it still only does 100 and not 1000. Your antient 100 meg router lasted you this long so a $100 router should last you years and should be a substantial upgrade from what you are currently using. If you are going to buy a new router, I would recommend getting one that supports Wireless AC. If the 155 is $20 cheaper than the 100 then in 5 months time the saving will have paid for the new router.1 point -

So let them or go to another OS. Of course I’ve a feeling you will say that OS has no vision and gone into maintenance mode too once you get there. Lets hear what your vision is? Well, they're not cleaning up their OS. They're adding some better Linux support, which is great for corporate settings. I guess, it's so niche it's crazy. Meanwhile, there is an incredibly long list of features being *cut*, not added. Cut. The features that already there are not being improved at all. Just maintained. You are talking like a person in denial. Open your eyes. There is no vision. They *are* cleaning it up. You are just upset that it’s not at your speed. Small increments are better. Look at OS X. It was a nightmare for the first few years. It’s now working off the same base that they slowly improved over time—for 20+ years. I think the other issue here is that you read release notes and think that is all that is being fixed and improved. If you were able to get a hold of MS’ repo commit log that shows everything, your head would explode. So no, I am not in denial. Wanna take a shot at my question? What is your vision? They are *maintaining* it. In fact it is ironic you mention Mac OS X, because that's another system in maintenance mode. No vision there either. In system this big the changelog is always going to be long, even if it is just maintenance. Hardly a head-exploding log. The log of things being deprecated or stalled indefinitely on Windows 10 is telling of where Microsoft is heading with W10. Nowhere, fast. Do you understand what maintenance mode is? It’s security updates and bug fixes and that is it. Neither OS fits that description. Last time I’m gonna ask before writing you off. WHAT IS YOUR VISION? That's just your fantasy, your definition and your sycophantic justification. I've already written you off, explaining things to sycophants is a waste of time. All talk, no substance. Boohoo, MS has no vision. Then someone asks you no less than three times what your vision is and what we get....silence. 🤣 All talk, no substance has been the very definition of every reply you made. I put as much effort into my reply as you do in yours. I don't have to be a master chef to know the food is mediocre, I don't have to present a vision to point out that there isn't any. Go ahead and apologize some more for the spineless Microsoft execs. Someone who has no vision criticizing a company for having no vision. I’ve heard it all. Im not apologizing for anyone, I’m just pointing out that what you call maintenance mode, isn’t. If that got your knickers in a twist, well...sorry? As I said, I don't have to be a master chef to know the food isn't very good. You're pushing a low effort logical fallacy. It doesn't become any less stupid the more you repeat it. Windows 10 is in maintenance mode, deal with it. So is Mac OS, and has been for more than half a decade. Oh I will deal with it, by laughing at you thinking you know what maintenance mode is. 🤣 Keep going, this is funny. It's when no meaningful features are added and every added feature is actually nothing more than a fix for an older feature and there is a steady stream of cut features. What your personal definition of maintenance mode is, doesn't change reality - W10 is in maintenance mode. Deal with it. it is not in maintenance mode ... i don't know what a 'meaningful feature' is to you but i think improvements to WDDM alone are meaningful. other features ( such as MS Search in Shell ) ... are not just 'fixes' for older features. and even cut features seem to be ( or will be ) making a comeback at some point ... ( sets ? ) If it's not heading anywhere, it's in maintenance mode. The WDDM change is a meaningful fix. An OS in maintenance mode is still maintained to make sure it works properly with modern hardware and infrastructure. That can be done indefinitely. Mac OS is also in maintenance mode and has been for almost a decade. Meaningless changes and fixes, shedding of features (e.g. 32 bit mode) and so on. It's true that Microsoft hasn't had a vision for Windows since Windows 8, its last great attempt to make a difference and move to the future. Instead we'll be forever in 2009.1 point -
