Are you sure they do for 5+? They don't keep getting new versions of the OS I believe. Good point. Personally I don't care about new versions a much as I care about security updates. Looks like the iPhone 6 was released on September 19th, 2014 and had its last security update ...OS 12.4.6, released March 24, 2020

  17. Google bans use of Zoom software on employee laptops

What is an MVP-quality? I do know what an MVP is, but how does this translate to quality? Do you though? Minimum viable product is pretty self-explanatory. How is a three letter acronym self-explanatory? The expansion of the three letter acronym makes it explanatory... Nice that you provided an answer, but why be a sarcastic jerk about it? Context judges what that acronym means. MVP Minimum Viable Product. What do those words say to you? I am not being sarcastic, nor a jerk. If someone says they know what it means, you expect them to understand the context too. I get you after re-reading the thread. Sorry about the "sarcastic jerk" assertion. Peace.

  20. Google bans use of Zoom software on employee laptops

You're making it out that these are simple security issues that just need to be ironed out. Zoom has shown utter disregard to security. Installing an undocumented (and unprotected!) local proxy to avoid warnings in Safari is inexcusable. That wasn't a little programming accident. If your company is developed enough to support employees then you should probably be concerned about security. They're depending on you.

  23. Google bans use of Zoom software on employee laptops

yes, for many companies, security isn't an issue because frankly, their business is not that important. but if you're Tesla developing the next battery technology or if you're Google discussing how to make 4K video take up half of the current bandwidth or if you're the SEC with insider knowledge that would be valuable to the Chinese government (all governments are big players in the stock market), then Zoom is the last place you want go. Imagine Boeing is having a conference call where they talk about how the government is about to give them a $200 billion bailout. That knowledge would be super useful to know when playing stocks. Zoom has intentionally been deceitful in their security practices. They lied about a lot of things and are now backtracking on everything. They're now playing dumb and acting like they're a startup when they're not. Their CEO came from Cisco Webex. He is not some guy in some garage making some $1 app. All their decisions are intentional from what type of encryption they use to sending information through their chinese data centers to bypassing the need for administrative privileges to installing things.

  25. Covid: Is your job essential?

Perfect picture (although no smile?) to highlight the point of the idea of what is essential and what isn't. How do you define "essential"? What Barney is doing is essential for people's lives, but one could argue I'm essential in such a matter because I'm keeping our guys working from home able to connect and do their work. It's abundantly clear to me who is essential out of the two. And I'm not it. Barney and his ilk didn't get the slight pause that we may have had. They take it as another day despite suddenly being hammered by an influx, We get given the possibility, thanks to that, to reduce the impact. I do find it funny how it has caused this situation for governments to recognize how much they look to the public to provide support. Now that the public can't provide the tax due to the virus the government (U.K. at least) are sending 500 million to charities, working on wiping NHS debt...why did it take a virus to make those decisions, and why was that money not available before? I know this is a "rainy day" situation, but damn...that's a lot of savings that could have been used elsewhere previously...

  27. Covid: Is your job essential?

@Barney T. Dude rock it!!! great pic.. The only problem is that people didn't appreciate what you were doing before the ###### hit the fan!! edit: The problem with the world is people do not understand the value of other people jobs until they actually need them!! Yeah billy the pizza delivery guy is just some kids job... But when you can not get your pizza delivered its an issue What about when you need that health care worker to check you in, or XYZ.. And hey they are not working.. Or sure your house never catches on fire - why should we pay for fireman, etc.. The infrastructure that allows the world to work is built on the backs of many workers. While you might not think that X is essential - give it a few weeks when that function is not being done.. Who would of thought that barbers were "essential" for example - give it a few months and everyone looks like ###### We are in the middle of a society changing event, that will be in the history books.. My youngest grandson is 5 currently - what do you think he will remember about this? What will he tell his kids about this time in his life when they ask him dad how was he pandemic of 2020? Could you really not wipe you ass because there was no TP?

  28. Pretty much everything about Google's Pixel 4a has leaked

While I agree with this, it's the new norm for most companies now. Have to keep that revenue stream going. It would be cool though to see a somewhat stripped down, basic phone without all the bells and whistles that's designed for long-term support. Single front & rear facing cameras maybe, adequate ram, screen, and processor. That's it. No biometrics, face-id, fingerprint reader, no AR, none of that. Have 5-7 year support with easily replaceable batteries. $200-$300 and call it good. That's called, the LG G3 running LineageOS. For the tech savvy, sure. But my thought was not a community driven "root your phone" option. Direct from manufacturers. IE - walk into a Verizon/ATT/ store and come out ready to go.

  32. Android or iPhone?

Yep, no contract here either and wouldn't use any phone/provider if I had to do a contract. Wouldn't consider a flagship phone in a million years either. Haven't ever spent more than $79 for any of my Android phones as that's about as high I'm even willing to go for just a phone!! Now, granted, I would like to have the updates that Iphones provide and that is the main thing I hate about Android, but like I said again, don't use my phone for much more than texting and calling, although that's almost a rarity that anybody calls now a days, and an occasional quick search if I need to to look up something. Nice to have a conversation without anyone going all ballistic about something as that's about a rarity anymore, but this will be my last reply to this conversation. We know where we stand on this! 🙂

  35. How much data does VOIP use?

You could have everyone in the house on a voip call 24/7 for the month and not come close to your limit... Here is a good table off all the different codec that could be use, and how much bandwidth they might use.. https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/voice/voice-quality/7934-bwidth-consume.html Lets call it an easy 100Kbps for easy math... So a 2 minute call would be 12Mbits = 1.5MBytes for the whole call.. So 1 hour call would be 45MB.. This is worse case scenario math, calls don't use that much..

  36. Funny how many things get delayed right? More so how Microsoft fumbles in every possible way when it comes to mobile. Even before covid, these devices were struggling under development. It’s a real disappointment. Can’t help but laugh at how ridiculous it is.

  44. Based on what? I had a waterproof watch that continued to be waterproof despite having the battery relaced multiple times. There's no reason you couldn't restore the waterproof capability of the device providing you reassemble it properly. That's a lazy fear mongering argument an OEM would make to justify selling you a new device rather than repairing your existing one.
    1 point
  45. "However, OEMs can roll out a software update to unlock the bootloader of their devices once they reach their end of life." It cannot work like that. The product must comply at the time that is sold. They'll have to provide the unlocking mechanism from the start. For security reasons, hopefully one that cannot be activated from within the OS. As the batteries will become replaceable, they can house a tiny switch next to the battery compartment to lock/unlock the bootloader.

  47. Sounds good. Too many tech companies get away with planned and forced obsolescence under the name of "progress". It should be up to the user to decide if he wants to continue using repaired device without new features or upgrade because he wants new features, and not because the older one cannot be repaired.
