WOWWW!! I've recovered my original Neowin account!! (I've been a member of the Neowin community since 2003).. I've just 'recently' started using 1Password, wiping out the use of my static password(s) that I've used since the beginning of time. I really wasn't even sure which email I had originally used when registering my Neowin account but looks like I've found it. Just glad to be back! One question - it looks like my 'member rating' is 2/10 stars (I only had '1' warning from a post I made in 2006 [14 years ago]). How can I bring that rating back up?4 points

I tried to use Vivaldi several times but always stopped using because the UI was never as snappy as other browsers. It is probably just a few microsecond but it is very obvious if a program like a browser I use all the time isn’t as snappy as compared to Office, Edge2, Chrome, FF, ... Vivialdi UI feels a bit iTunesy. Is this fixed after several releases now?3 points -

ah I see. That won't be 'too' difficult for me. I am a Canadian (from Toronto). I grew up with DOS/Windows (~1994 - 2006) and made a hard transition right at the time when Apple was making the transition to Intel (2006/2007). Now I don't use Windows at all, and only use macOS/iOS devices exclusively. I now live in California (working in Silicon Valley). However, I still have a heart for reading Microsoft/Windows related news. I'd like to give a HUGE THANK YOU to all the admins and writers who have been keeping this site going!2 points

Samsung working on 600MP camera sensor that could be superior to human eyes
dead.cell and one other reacted to naap51stang for a topic
I crack up when I see this garbage. More NEVER equates to better typically, ESPECIALLY when you look at the SIZE of each sensor element. When you have that many, that close together, ramp up the signal level to capture low light photos, the signal to noise ratio / crosstalk causes all sorts of issues. If more was better, why do full frame & APS-C sensors not have 400, 500 megapixels? Because they have a LARGER sensor and EACH pixel is larger, and therefore can capture more light. And, the GLASS on the front makes a big difference. When you look "inside" the camera lens and then understand how much human labor is required to build them, you then understand why they are so expensive.2 points -

Bill Gates calls Trump's de-funding of WHO dangerous

Silly question. What do you think he "gets in return"? I've no idea which is why I said I was wondering. As a first step, I'd say that his stake in drug companies is worth investigating for a potential conflict of interests. https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB1021577629748680000" rel="external nofollow">https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB1021577629748680000 Instead of linking to a paywall, why not give us an example of how Bill Gates is supposedly profiteering off drug companies and poor people? Because judging from your comments that appears to be where you are steering it? The conversation should be where the US president cut off funding (not replaced) to deal with pandemics, most likely because it was put in place by Obama; k thnx.1 point -

The Ryzen 9 is a good place to cut. The 7 is more than plenty for most tasks; gaming, encoding, etc. The 9 is a good bit more expensive and I hear it runs hotter as well so you end up requiring a custom cooler if you don't have good airflow in your case ... The 9 really is mostly for enthusiasts and people with HEAVY workloads.1 point -

Very strange (internet) connection issue
jnelsoninjax reacted to +BudMan for a topic
To be honest nothing.. Leave it disabled.. While it is the future of the internet.. There is ZERO "need" of it currently.. ZERO!! There is not one single mainstream service that requires you to use IPv6.. Not one! So unless you need/want to access some off the wall p0rn site or dark web sort of thing that only has IPv6 there is no "need' of it. But sure it can cause all sorts of issues, etc. My current ISP doesn't even support it - many do not.. I get my IPv6 through a tunnel from Hurricane electric... Only reason I do that is because I like to play with it, and what I do for a living is networking... But my PC and most of my network doesn't have it enabled... I have some test stuff that does, I serve up ntp to the pool via IPv6, etc.. So unless you have a desire to learn about it and deploy it correctly, and also have to deal with the added security and management it can bring.. I would just leave it off, turn it off at the router even so its not even possible to use.. Many IPv6 fan boys disagree with this stance - but sorry its networking security 101.. If your not using a protocol, if you do not understand a protocol... If you have no actual need of said protocol you shouldn't have it enabled..1 point -

Microsoft has trademarked the Series X logo
AltecXP reacted to George P for a topic
A few things, surprised how it doesn't have the same circle style to the X like on the console. Having said that, the logo works both as is with the "series" vertical but also if you turn it horizontal it still works because of the X. I wonder if they'll change the buttons on the console/controllers to be more of this type later? Minus the word "series", just this new more square X design.1 point -

Stardock announces Curtains, letting you add new styles to Windows 10
MFH reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
It boggles the mind there is no glass option in Windows when they achieved it with Vista 13 years ago, but I believe the official explanation was about technical limitations and hardware manufacturers (and consumers) not being happy about it not working on all hardware. It was never about technical limitations, it was about perception and maybe a bit of battery usage along with dumb MFRs complaining. The irony is MS gave them 'Starter' edition - which was slower than using the newer compositor. There were 1000 guides on how to turn off Aero/Glass/Blur/DWM/etc. Because users 'thought' it was slower because it was pretty, this created disparity with users rejecting and turning off the composer. Windows 8 turned it all off because the Composer was forced on. This was to prevent users from screaming about the 'pretty effects' and preventing them from turning it off. Which worked. There are guides now that tell users to turn off blur/transparency - even though there is zero performance hit on hardware made in the last 10 years. I agree, and wish Microsoft would just turn it back on everywhere. It exists outside the Windows chrome, with Acrylic being used in most Windows Apps.1 point -

Office 365 consumer subscriptions become Microsoft 365 today

If you are going to use all the features then it may be worth having, but for most people they will do well with something like Libre office and one of the free cloud storage services if they use the cloud for storage. GeForce Now to lose titles from Xbox Game Studios, Warner Bros., and more

Uh huh, except you own a license to play the game on your PC, not up in some cloud server. That's the stance publishers are taking, specially when you have someone like Google who is doing the same thing but paying them to do it. And I find the idea that you're limiting yourself to just Steam and Battle.net for gaming is silly. I have Steam, GoG, EGS and Xbox Game Pass all installed, I'm hardly logging in every time I start a game. If anything the constant steam client updates annoy me more than all the choice of where to get games from. And why does it matter if a PC I'm playing it on is right next to me or in a datacenter? As the publishers who own said games. I just gave you a reason that they're probably using to pull their games off of GFN, or they want nVidia to give them some more money. As far as why MS did, I think it's pretty clear why. I understand MS and EA, who are building their own services, but why Codemasters?1 point -

Maybe I'm just old fashioned and don't want to be tied down to just one or two options. I have no issue with other stores if I can get a game I want at a good price. I've been playing Just Cause 4 through EGS for free, a game I was probably never going to buy anyways. And I've played around, roughly, ~$200+ worth of games for $4 a month on Game Pass for PC, don't have Game Pass ultimate but will probably get that later once I get around to buying a XSX. Steams all well and good but I see very good value being offered elsewhere so I jump on.1 point -

Bill Gates calls Trump's de-funding of WHO dangerous
zhangm reacted to Gungel for a topic
Highly doubtful. Besides having to deal with this crisis, the state of the country has been at it's strongest state ever. Trump is taking the stance of calling countries and organizations out that have leeched off US funding but not provided sufficient benefits. How is that a bad thing? But hey, if you allow the whiney media do to your thinking, that's your choice... If Trump found a cure for cancer, you and your media thinkers would still find a way to spin it negatively... He does whatever it takes to divert from his failures. Blaming the WHO for something he was warned about in December, again in January and once more in February by his advisers. He even claimed last year that the WHO can't be trusted, so why did he suddenly trust them when it came to this pandemic. I'm so glad that his TV ratings are great again. /s1 point -
