Microsoft says Surface PCs don't have Thunderbolt for security reasons
matthiew and 7 others reacted to goretsky for a topic
Hello, These kind of attacks require dedicated, specialized hardware as well as direct access to the device by an adversary for enough time in order to perform the attack. If an attacker has that kind of access to the device then there are other higher-priority concerns that need to be addressed, such as why an attacker has unfettered access to the hardware. Thunderbolt controllers have security levels since at least 2013 (https://thunderbolttechnology....t%203%20and%20Security.pdf) and Microsoft themselves implemented DMA attack protection two years ago (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-...rotection-for-thunderbolt). As far as I know, Microsoft has never documented the proprietary interfaces used by the Surface to connect docks, keyboards or other Microsoft accessories. Nobody can tell if these have DMA-accessible interfaces or other attack vectors as a result. This reads more like an attempt to justify design limitations of the Surface line as security benefits. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky8 points -

sharpdesigner and 3 others reacted to Silversee for a topic
It's not an "ad" since it is neither paid third-party content, nor are you being sold anything by Microsoft. More accurately it's an informational or promotional message. By using that terminology sans quotes, you are feeding a particular narrative. Not a solid journalistic practice, in case that matters.4 points -

Some good could come out of it. Broadband is being tested in every developed country right now, and I guess it is time for governments and companies to make good on all the promises and claims about superfast fibre-connections they made more than a decade ago, let alone some places that are still not even connected!3 points -

Apple reportedly pushing back the mass production of its 2020 flagship iPhones by a month
wingliston and 2 others reacted to Brony for a topic
The global economy will take a big hit and most people will suffer from it, directly or indirectly and it includes the tech market. But Apple knows its customers, and a big number of them don't know the word: "common sense". It is not the time to spend on a new phone, nor Apple of any other brand, but people will buy it anyways.3 points -

Agreed. I had planned on upgrading my Galaxy S8+ this year (before the pandemic started), and I just broke the screen on it this weekend. Blech, it sucks. I am now using an old iPhone 6. I have an emergency fund to last me a year, but with this weak / uncertain economy, I'm not buying any unnecessary tech until the economy recovers.2 points -

Why are 4K Blu-rays still so expensive while 4K digital movies are getting cheaper?
macoman and one other reacted to Orange for a topic
I think there is pros and cons to both. I was a big lover of Blu Ray's - Had over 400 to my collection over the years but sold them all last year. I stream some, download some. But then Netflix for example never keeps the same film for long. So having that copy on Blu Ray would be the better option. With today so many streaming services i think Blu Ray will lose out, I can see 8K being more and more expensive and less popular. Streaming will be the new way of film watching.2 points -

TsarNikky - This situation is *everywhere* - it's not unique to developed nations. The reasons it exists is that it costs to deploy broadband; nobody - even governments - deploy for free; the deployment costs need to be recovered. My view is that it prompts users to download something that they do not currently have. Though it's not a paid promotion, it also isn't informational in saying "hey, we have this feature/tool in the OS that you aren't using". If the browser was already installed, like it probably would be with the May 2020 update, then this wouldn't be an add, IMO. Is this double standard? So how haven't I heard you say anything about the fact that Google does the same thing in this article. Google has been doing it for years and I think it's about high time Microsoft start doing it too. But why didn't you mention that part in your article? It's evidence you're not being objective. Yup. Chrome not being easily uninstallable on Android devices (ADB does not count here), Chrome ads in Search, Youtube and GDocs etc. Why is MS not allowed to advertise their services in their products? Nobody said it's wrong. To be honest, you pay for most of Microsoft's software, unlike Google. Google has a completely different revenue model.1 point -

The 'secure view' screen is terrible and makes the laptop feel like something from the 1990s TFT era. The battery hit from needing to increase the brightness is also not good. It also makes for bright spots if not looking at the screen dead on. Save yourself the money and go the normal screen, or at least look at the 'secure view' side by side with a normal screen before forking out the extra1 point -

Well sorry for wasting everyone's time, I feel incredibly stupid but I indeed plugged my hdmi cable into the motherboard and not the gpu. Thanks Jim K for mentioning it, I didn't even know motherboards had hmdi ports and just assumed it was in the gpu. For the boot however, I thought that using old ssd/hdd for Windows was doable and the only con was that you run into the risk of losing some files (which isn't an issue for me). I don't currently have any usb's or external hard drives and I no longer have access to my old pc to modify my drives which is why I'm doing what I'm doing. Thanks everybody for replying, I appreciate it a ton.1 point -

Review of the iStorage datAshur Pro2, an encrypted thumbdrive for home and work
Tuskd reacted to Fezmid for a topic
Yes, Human.Online is 100% correct and it's something I probably should've highlighted more specifically in the article -- once the drive is decrypted (entirely done on the thumb drive itself), it works exactly like any regular USB thumb drive and so can be used on any system. All the processing is done on the drive, so there's no drivers to install on any system. I just added clarification to the specifications section to address your question - thanks for the feedback. "The USB drive contains a rechargeable battery. This lets you type in the PIN and unlock the device before connecting the datAshur PRO2 to a USB port on your computer. Since all of the encryption and decryption is done on the thumb drive itself, the datAshur PRO2 can be used on Windows, Mac, and Linux without the need to install any drivers. If the battery dies from lack of use, you can still plug it into a computer and unlock the drive while it's charging."1 point -

Which will affect almost no one, really. For better or worse, the Wii U did terribly, and it's no surprise that Nintendo believes they can make more money from games that originally came out on the Wii U. That image is a bit too blurry for WTF to recognise with any degree of accuracy. But the devil is in the details: The stem of the h is higher than the T The circular letters are truly circular The crossbar of the f is the same height as the top of the o It absolutely is a variant of the Avenir family, and I would suggest Pro 65 Medium. Can you please show what you feel is different, genuinely curious? I've taken a better quality version of the Dunelm logo and used said font and it fit perfectly. Hope it helps1 point -
