  1. Hello, These kind of attacks require dedicated, specialized hardware as well as direct access to the device by an adversary for enough time in order to perform the attack. If an attacker has that kind of access to the device then there are other higher-priority concerns that need to be addressed, such as why an attacker has unfettered access to the hardware. Thunderbolt controllers have security levels since at least 2013 (https://thunderbolttechnology....t%203%20and%20Security.pdf) and Microsoft themselves implemented DMA attack protection two years ago (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-...rotection-for-thunderbolt). As far as I know, Microsoft has never documented the proprietary interfaces used by the Surface to connect docks, keyboards or other Microsoft accessories. Nobody can tell if these have DMA-accessible interfaces or other attack vectors as a result. This reads more like an attempt to justify design limitations of the Surface line as security benefits. Do not have to sell anything for it to be an ad

  3. Microsoft begins serving Edge ads in the Search UI on Windows 10

It's not an "ad" since it is neither paid third-party content, nor are you being sold anything by Microsoft. More accurately it's an informational or promotional message. By using that terminology sans quotes, you are feeding a particular narrative. Not a solid journalistic practice, in case that matters.

  7. COVID-19 lockdown exposes digital poverty in the UK

Some good could come out of it. Broadband is being tested in every developed country right now, and I guess it is time for governments and companies to make good on all the promises and claims about superfast fibre-connections they made more than a decade ago, let alone some places that are still not even connected!

  9. The global economy will take a big hit and most people will suffer from it, directly or indirectly and it includes the tech market. But Apple knows its customers, and a big number of them don't know the word: "common sense". It is not the time to spend on a new phone, nor Apple of any other brand, but people will buy it anyways.

Great tool for finding this stuff and removing it from starting up. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/autoruns Free, and a MS tool even. Been using it for years, even before it was MS, use to be non MS, and then they bought them out.. The sysinternals site as lots of great little utils like that. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/

  17. Agreed. I had planned on upgrading my Galaxy S8+ this year (before the pandemic started), and I just broke the screen on it this weekend. Blech, it sucks. I am now using an old iPhone 6. I have an emergency fund to last me a year, but with this weak / uncertain economy, I'm not buying any unnecessary tech until the economy recovers.

  21. I think there is pros and cons to both. I was a big lover of Blu Ray's - Had over 400 to my collection over the years but sold them all last year. I stream some, download some. But then Netflix for example never keeps the same film for long. So having that copy on Blu Ray would be the better option. With today so many streaming services i think Blu Ray will lose out, I can see 8K being more and more expensive and less popular. Streaming will be the new way of film watching.

Start10, Startisback, Open-Shell. Don't have to put up with this nonsense. If only every single one of them did not suck more than the Windows Start menu Classic Shell does not 'suck more than the Windows Start menu'. It is hands down the best Start menu ever made ... ! ... You can use the Windows 95 Start menu with it ... or the Windows XP Start menu ... or the Windows Vista Start menu ... ! ... You can have jump lists ... or not ! A search box ... or not ! ... Skins are customizable ( with some being very creative and/or beautiful such as the Windows NT Workstation theme ) ... ! ... Literally every single aspect is customizable !!!

  31. COVID-19 lockdown exposes digital poverty in the UK

Problem is with the UK government is that 24 years ago they was planning on FTTP to every home as standard. The original trial plan was to be on the Angel Town estate in Brixton. This was all being done via the house of lords, with BT and IBM at the time, along with the company I was working for who was gonna supply refurbished computers for each property working with IBM. They was looking at possibly using thin clients in each home running NT4 TSE or Windows 2000. Sadly when anything was ever asked in these meetings slightly technical it was brushed off. Damn shame the project died as it turned into a free lunch. Also do think the teacher who's saying that 24% of students don't have broadband in the area, I live not far from that school also the catchment are for the school is covered by the same telephone exchange as which I'm connected to and I get max speeds 80/20

  34. Yeah well, this was zero added cost as well. It almost sounds like they don’t have email on their phones. Not sure why that would be. HIPPA compliance (or whatever the UK equivalent is) maybe? Can only speak for my trust but most of us don't have a device provided by the business. To sync NHS mail to your personal device it changes and locks a bunch of settings on your device plus if you enter your password incorrect 8 times it resets the phone to factory defaults. Given the nature of the content of our email these are very sensible requirements but a lot of people don't want to do that with their personal devices.

  35. Microsoft begins serving Edge ads in the Search UI on Windows 10

My view is that it prompts users to download something that they do not currently have. Though it's not a paid promotion, it also isn't informational in saying "hey, we have this feature/tool in the OS that you aren't using". If the browser was already installed, like it probably would be with the May 2020 update, then this wouldn't be an add, IMO.

  36. It depends on individual financial health. For instance, we have not been affected financially during this pandemic...well I take that back...we have saved a good amount of money by not traveling, and eating out. The wife is a medical professional, the government/VA sends me my pension, and our emergency fund is stocked at 12 months. In our situation, we’d be able to still consume normally when the bans are lifted. Fortunately, our common sense has prepared us for life’s emergencies. Can’t wait to buy the new Xbox! :-)

  38. "Concretely, the malicious GIF enclosed an 'src' attribute. When it was opened, the target browser would try to load the GIF and this would send the 'authtoken' cookie" Reminds me of the head of microsoft security about a decade ago, visited our university to give a talk and he said the new XSS protection in internet explorer was 'unbeatable', someone in the year above commented and said that's not true and that he'd beaten it, so this man tried to brush it off and make the commentator look silly. After the talk, the commentator showed this head of security (ex-FBI) his exploit in action, it bypassed IE's 'unbeatable' XSS protection and eventually some time later he received an apology email from the head of security. That aside, I'm at a loss as to how this ever got through their testing net given that this is literally the most basic XSS in the history of XSS...

Buddy, you really don't need to tell someone who's looking forward to being able to get 64GB of memory on two sticks, that 8GB is good enough for most people.

  41. AMD may not be debuting DDR5 memory support before 2022

Hell, 16GB is plenty for most people and it seems to be reasonably priced. beyond this (like going from 16GB to 32GB) is overkill for most people. this will likely hold true for years to come as even 8GB is still easily good enough for many uses.
