In under 2 years, Microsoft designed and built a full OS and new platform based on theoretical designs and technologies, that was so advanced, it defied terminology at the time, and so extensible it is still at the heart of Windows and Azure to this day. The last few years at Microsoft are flat out embarrassing in comparison. Let that sink in, creating new OS and kernel technologies from scratch, designing the models, the platform, and coding them - all in under 3 years from start to release. Even the inside info I get, is almost worthless, as things change and even regress in the blink of an eye. So many massive changes and work discarded due to whims of idiots, and a lack of focus on the UI and UX is really sad. The only 'teams' that seem to have a clue are the kernel team (Cutler, Russsinovich, etc) and the DirectX/Graphics/ML/AI teams. The upcoming May release's (2003) kernel changes have nearly a full 20% CPU improvement, and the GPU/Gaming/Graphics improvements are also 10-20% faster with new next generation features that are beyond impressive. The other Windows teams (UI/Apps/etc) under Panay have updated ######ing icons, and mangled more things than they have added. Even Core and development technologies, like the frameworks and the promised WinUI update has stagnated because of the continuing changes from Panay's idiots. Panay is a freaking marketing person, and should NOT be involved, let alone in charge of an OS or platform technology.) /rant off3 points -

1607 is quite old now and support should be expiring soon if not already. Have you tried newer builds? 1909 is quite stable and has a few nice quality of life improvements since then too. You could always install to another partition or another drive to test out to see if it's stable enough for your needs so you don't disturb your current install. I'm running 2004 Release Preview on my tower at home and it also seems perfectly stable to me just for the record 🙂3 points -

A Blonde joke
Brandon H and one other reacted to jnelsoninjax for a topic
An attractive blonde from Cork, Ireland arrived at a casino in Australia. She seemed a little intoxicated and bet $25,000 on a single roll of the dice. She said “I hope you don’t mind but I feel much luckier when I’m completely nude” With that, she stripped from the neck down, rolled the dice and with an Irish brogue yelled “Come on baby, mama needs new clothes!” As the dice came to a stop she yelled “YES! YES!, I WON! I WON!” She hugged each of the dealers and then picked up her winnings and her clothes and quickly departed. The dealers stared at each other dumbfounded. Finally one of them asked “What did she roll?” The other answered “I don’t know, I thought you were watching”2 points -

How to use Canon DSLR camera as a webcam with your PC
Tarrant64 and one other reacted to +Dick Montage for a topic
Part of the idea is that if you don't have a webcam available, which many don't, few may happen a DSLR sitting around that can be used in it's place. Webcams are hard to come by right now. And they're not inexpensive in a time period where money is tight for people. This isn't just about quality, it's about an alternative way to gain access to streaming over the web. Or did you somehow miss the fact we're in a pandemic and many people are stuck at home right now? A DSLR would be cumbersome as it is pretty large, so you need a tripod and while some of these people may have a tripod, you still have to find a good place to put it. I can get a webcam, plenty on Amazon, well in the UK there is and even in a store locally that does click and collect, granted they are in limited supply, saying that I understand it will not be the same in other countries. I do not think I would like to use my DSLR for a webcam. It’s a “silly idea” because you don’t think you’d want to use it? Ive been using a DSLR as part of my streaming solution for months, the quality is well above anything a webcam is capable for. Is it overkill? Sure. But that’s the users choice. With much of the worlds workforce’s working from home, the supply chains dry for items such as webcams - I applaud Canon for reacting with this solution. Or is it that Canon are trying to sell more of their cameras? With support for older cameras on the list, that's an overly cynical stance that holds little water. And even if they were - so what? Is a company selling more of their products a "silly idea"? Be upfront: You made a daft comment based around you not wanting to use this or not comprehending it, and you are now inventing further arguments rather than just syaing "Yeah, fair play - I'm not the audience here".2 points -

Not possible. The package was build with a minimum version for a reason and running that old a version of Windows likely does not include assemblies that the app requires. I think you choice is to upgrade to a newer version of Win 10 or find another app to do what you are looking to do.2 points -

Microsoft confirms that Windows 10X will be on single-screen PCs first; Surface Neo delayed
Figure 8 Dash reacted to George P for a topic
There will be ways to do it, I'm sure, but it's not sounding like it will be a straight forward install like now. More of flashing the OS onto your device, like Android or iOS on your phone/tablet for example. Who knows what happens in the future but it seems like they've made it specific to a set of hardware. I've seen posts saying it doesn't support AMD chips, or ARM. Is this installation restriction/process permanent or just a preliminary development type thing? I think (and this is just a guess) is that it will be permanent. From what I've gathered from various tech blogs is that 10X is still Windows 10 at its core, but will dump a lot of 10's baggage. That could include legacy driver support. Microsoft probably wants to avoid putting 10X out in the wild, then having users complain after they install it and their wifi stops working, or internal gpu goes wonky, etc. I'm assuming it'll also have secured UEFI requirements beyond what 10 needs. I think they're going to open it up to devs to test but they'll actually pre-install it on a device. Build is coming up so I expect to hear details there but as it stands they've limited it to specific hardware so it works with all the container tech that's running on it. So I think for sure it's got a narrow list of intel chips it supports.1 point -

Figure 8 Dash reacted to WrongHead™ for a topic
Windows 10 is Windows 10. Much of its core will not be changed anymore. It's a modern version of Windows that has legacy code. Don't expect for big changes to come on it. I think you need to focus on Windows 10X, which is basically Windows 10 without the legacy code. This will be the future of Windows, and will enable the next generation of devices for the next 10 to 20 years. It has 30 years worth of legacy code stripped in it, full Win32 app emulation, a new File Explorer, and many more. Panos leading Windows at a time like this is a perfect fit. He proved himself with the Surface line of devices and I'm sure that he will bring that same kind of energy and innovation to the software side. He has big dreams and plans for the platform. Let's hope that he will be successful in his new role.1 point -

The OpenGL wrapping layers are different from OpenGL support for games/apps. The wrapper technologies are a way forward to provide faster OpenGL by using lower level DX12 technologies - mapping them down to DX12 for developers. (This will help, by moving projects away from OpenGL and to DX12 and Vulkan easier.) OpenGL on Windows ARM for games/software is just like x64/x86 and fully available, but it depends on driver support from the GPU makers. Essentially - Scream at AMD/Intel/NVidia if you need a newer version of OpenGL than they are providing in their drivers.1 point -
OnePlus 8 review: Thinner, lighter, and prettier than the Pro
greensabath reacted to Eric Biran for a topic
This phone looks nice (although I prefer the less flashy, less fingerprinty Pro) and has a great screen. I agree that full HD is plenty of res, and 90K is probably the sweet spot for smooth performance and battery life. That said, this phone is overpriced, even at $699. No wireless charging, no zoom lens, no always-on-display (yet), some fairly serious bugs in night mode, and really below average camera performance based on your gallery. Maybe at $400 it would be a more convincing offer, but you are way better off buying another brand's last year's flagship for $700--or even less, if you look around for a deal.1 point -

WrongHead™ reacted to Figure 8 Dash for a topic
Last I heard, 10X will not be available for installation on existing devices. That's a bummer because I would love to try 10X on my Surface. In time, I could see all (well most of) consumer PCs moving to 10X with legacy 10 being reserved for business devices. From what I've seen of 10X, it looks like an OS of the future. While I like Windows 10 more than other operating systems, it still feels dated in parts and modern in others.1 point -

This is an older thread at this point, but following up as I did just finally upgrade my CPU. Microsoft says Surface PCs don't have Thunderbolt for security reasons
matthiew reacted to adrynalyne for a topic
So do M.2 ports yet MS still uses NVMe SSDs. Yeah. And so does the CPU, the graphics card, etc. However, those are internal to the machine, and not even interchangeable in an embedded setup like in the Surface without cumbersome soldering. And that's the whole point. It's not the direct connection to the PCIe that makes something a security risk per se, but the ability to connect a device to the PCIe bus that's not part of a trusted hardware setup. Like, you know, the fact alone that your bank account can be accessed is not a security risk per se, but it is if not only you, but also strangers can do that too. Get it now? They should get rid of USB too using that logic.1 point -
