"And especially from a disease that is easy to cure with hydroxychloroquine." This is easily the dumbest ###### you could post. Please stop spreading lies, this has been debunked weeks ago. Your immune system is part of the problem, sheesh where do people like you come from?

Oh please. Probably many there wanting to work too. I've got a blind co-worker with diabetes who still comes into work with me. Nobody's asking us to come in either. We still sanitize and follow other practices. Just can't be left to sit at home all day. In fact, our managers regularly check in with the team too to make sure nobody's getting depressed or something else, to talk either openly or anonymously via Officevibe. This idea that it's just big CEOs trying to make money alone is preposterous.

Yeah. You know, I thought the doctors and nurses, and retired doctors who went back to their jobs to try and save lives during this crisis were really going above and beyond. I recently realized just how inadequate the recognition is for their work: imagine you're risking your life, watching your patients, maybe a family member or friend, and colleagues getting sick and dying and wondering whether you're next. Meanwhile on the news you're hearing about these irresponsible ******s blathering on about how it's not so bad, it's a hoax, and "huuurr, MY freedoms are being violated, I'm going to do what's right for ME." And they still go back to the job day after day. WTF? They're the ones who deserve news stories and recognition, not this.

This is front-page tech? This looks like a civil activism story. What's next, Martha Stewart served red wine with chicken, or Bill Gates was spotted in line at a Krispy Creme?

"For communism to succeed in West and wipe out 90% of the population it just need a government inclined to do so". What does a viral infection have to do with communism in the West? How is 90% of the population going to be wiped out because of this supposed communism? What government is inclined to use this pandemic in order to create a communist state? Please provide concrete data and evidence for all of those claims (as opposed to conspiracy theories). "Most will gladly trade liberty for a pseudo safety, even if it kill everyone in the end" Please provide evidence that indicates that most of the population will do that. Also you are committing a slippery slope fallacy by stating that temporary social distancing measures (that are going to be eased substantially when more testing is available, and removed completely once there is a viable anti-viral treatment and a vaccine) is the same as people giving up their liberty en mass and that it will somehow result in everyone dying. "I don't trust Elon Musk at all, but he's definitely right this time". So you have no reason to trust Elon Musk (and in fact state that you distrust him), but you suddenly trust him here because his actions serve as confirmation bias. "The majority of us have a working immune system and it doesn't work by isolating yourself like a germaphobic". Yes the majority of the us do have a working immune system and it will work regardless of whether we are or are not social distancing. However, we are trying to to protect those more vulnerable in our society including the elderly and the immunosuppressed. The vast majority of people that carry this virus are asymptomatic or have minimal symptoms while they shed it, hence allowing them to unknowingly infect those around them (including the more vulnerable). We are implementing more strict social distancing to protect these people until testing becomes more abundant (as it has it many other countries), at which point social distancing measures are eased and eventually fully dropped once a proper anti-viral therapy becomes available and later a full vaccine. Moreover, we are also trying to prevent healthcare resources from becoming exhausted in a manner that puts healthcare workers at risk and also results in them making tough decisions (such as those seen in Italy and Spain) where due to a lack of equipment, doctors have to choose who to give ventilators to and at the expense of whom. "And especially from a disease that is easy to cure with hydroxychloroquine" No this disease is not and has never been shown to be "cured" through the use of hydroxychloroquine. Hydroxychloroquine (and variations thereof) have been found to be effective in improving outcomes for some patients in some research but the overall results are still mixed with some research showing little improvement. There are other medications being researched as well for efficacy, and some of those have also exhibited similar mixed results as Hydroxychloroquine, such as Remdesivir. "The West IS doomed" So first off, this is just baseless alarmism without any rhyme or reason behind. Whenever anything deviates from the past (immigrants, gay people getting married, universal healthcare, transgender people existing), there is a subset group of people that create a fallacious view on how it will result in the end of the West (or whatever region they happen to be in). No the West is not doomed because of this pandemic. A pandemic is a global phenomenon. It does not care whether you are from the West or the East, capitalist or socialist, liberal or conservative, democratic or authoritarian. Many countries have implemented similar measures around the world, and there are countries and regions that have already eased restrictions by just implementing more rigorous testing and contact tracing. There are countries with drive through testing centres where you can quickly get tested, get your result, and go about your day. We will all get through this as a species, just as we have with regards to past challenges. And hopefully we will learn a few things that will help us in the event of a future infectious pathogen.

The whole Coronavirus baloney has been blown way out of proportion. Yes, people have got sick, and, yes, people have died. But, this isn't even close to Black Plague status as it has been made out to be. Fear is being used and people are being played. Too many people have a Sheep mindset and are looking to their government and/or science gods to save them.

Go for it, but be financially and legally responsible for anyone that gets sick or dies because of your opening at your work place. if you have an outbreak in your factory, you better be prepared to handle it... or somehow offer testing for everyone regularly...

  11. I have been working everyday my self, as long as they have proper PPE equipment and also do temp checks I see nothing wrong with this. If you are stick, stay at home and they need to be given tests. People cannot live on unemployment forever. It is time to get back to work being as safe as possible, California has flattened the curve and that was the whole point of stay at home. What is truly sad is the people not following PPE guidelines and self distancing in public, that is maddening to me.

Lots of non-tech news on this site over the years. Recently this means non-tech news around the pandemic, including a story with the headline "Bill Gates calls Trump's de-funding of WHO dangerous" (this is Bill Gates' political activism, not a tech story), Jack Dorsey pledging money to COVID-19 relief efforts (not a tech story what he does with his own money), Mojang partnering on spreading COVID-19 awareness (a story about a PR effort), Apple and other companies closing or re-opening stores in China (a business story, not a tech story), etc. Its not what I come to this site for and I couldn't care less for it, but at least they're being consistent about it and covering this story, too, instead of hiding it because its on the other side of the issue.

So for one thing, this virus disproportionately affects the elderly and those who are immunocompromised (although healthy adults can also become badly ill or even die). Another key problem with it is that the vast majority of people that get it are either asymptomatic or present mild symptoms, and so they can come into contact with those that vulnerable (without knowing) and potentially make them seriously ill. Moreover, people do not have a sheep mindset by following proper social distancing protocols (which includes avoiding certain activities in more dense areas until there is more abundant testing) so the healthcare system is not flooded until there is a viable anti-viral treatment and later a vaccine. Unless of course, you would prefer to go through what countries like Italy (and even States like New York to a degree) have gone through where the healthcare system had become so overwhelmed that doctors have had make choices on which patients to give ventilators and who to let die. Also, those of us that put our trust in the scientific method and scientific consensus, do so because it has delivered us results that have allowed us to advance as a species and increased our quality of life and longevity. It has proven far more useful than blind faith and wishful thinking.

  17. Reintroducing myself after a decade

Hi Everyone. I'm actually an old member. I joined back at the beginning of 2002. I can't believe it's been eighteen years. I'm sure there are some people here who aren't even that old. I used to visit Neowin all the time back then. It was my go-to website for computer advice/news. Always loved the style of this website. But I haven't been here in a decade. Looks like my last post was 2010. Which is around the around time I built my last PC before quickly trading it to my girlfriend for her Macbook. I've been a mac user ever since, at least at home. I've used Windows for years at work until switching jobs and using a mac at the new one a couple years back. Although to be fair, I was also a mac user for several years back in the 00s at different times. So I'm familiar with both and I'm thinking about building a new Windows 10 PC today. I kinda got the bug again after helping my girlfriend upgrade her PC this past weekend. Not sure if I should get into my PC building ideas and questions here or start another topic elsewhere for that. Let me know. But for now. Hi!

Except I know 2 nurses and both of them say it's way overblown and they're really not all that afraid of contracting it. But yeah sure. EDIT: And I'm not saying they're for sure right about it. To be fair, our area has had a fairly low number of cases compared to others. All I'm saying is don't act like it's across the board people going in to work not knowing if they're gonna die today. When one of those nurses I mentioned is barely even working every other week right now because the medical center is just so slow. "I know two nurses who say"... I live in a city that has 3 major hospitals, two of which are also teaching hospitals. As such there is a MASSIVE population of nurses here - every single one I know of is taking it as seriously as they should be. And my comment is anecdotal, just as yours is. So feel free to write it off, but you also write your own off.

If a hacker gets physical access to your machine and wants the data off it they'll find a way regardless. There's no such thing as true security if physical access is gained ... Indeed. If they have physical access to your machine you have bigger issues than Thunderbolt compromise. Physical access to tear down or break into a case/device is FAR different from walking by someone at Starbucks and shoving a dongle in an exposed Thunderbolt port. Exposed/Easy access is the ENTIRE point of the problem with Thunderbolt. Just as you can plug in a malicious device into a standard USB port... physical access basically does any device in. Thunderbolt or not. Your entire premise seems off. If you think USB gives you direct memory access, you really need to go read up. I’m good. I know plenty about thunderbolt thanks. Doesn’t negate the fact that there are plenty of malicious usb devices that can wreak havoc on users.

  37. Elon Musk threatens to pull Tesla factory out of California

I love displays of Darwin. stay in your basement and survive. let others go to work and survive too They're not going to survive. I hope you've never called yourself "pro-life". COVID-19 is serious, specifically to those with pre-existing conditions or the elderly, but it is not certain death. Trying to insinuate that is blatantly incorrect. Secondly, what happens when unemployment skyrockets to 20%? How do people feed their families then? How do you take care of your medical necessities without insurance that your previous employer provided? At some point, this becomes a balancing act. Many businesses are still open while practicing safer methods, such as enforced distancing, masks, gloves, face guards, curb side pick ups, etc. We can acknowledge there will be risk of businesses opening up, but we can still take measures to reduce how many people are infected. I would rather take this route at this point, than people continue to lose their jobs. Re your second point, it could be a good chance to finally introduce free, universal healthcare like most other wealthy countries so that you're not relying on any employer to fulfill such a basic and fundamental need. Not going to happen. That only works when there's a high tax pool population, and that's not the case in the US. The population is too big, and half the population doesn't pay in. You can't just steal from everybody else to cover the bill. Could that half of the population start paying in? Of course, but the political battle will also never allow it. Plus the healthcare costs in the US are outrageously out of control, so no universal system could be funded until that issue is addressed. And like many other issues, the govt can't take control of a private business sector, so throw that on the pile of issues. People have all the freedom in the world to better themselves, work their way to better jobs, and get their own funded healthcare. Unfortunately a huge chuck of the population refuses to put in that effort.

  39. Microsoft will likely be able to learn from Apple's ARM MacBook

I was hoping for some new and compelling arguments and ideas. Maybe I am missing the point. Apple isn't doing anything better outside of tighter lock-ins, fewer features, and technology restrictions. For example, they have the ability to control developers and push them to build new native software builds because they have a smaller and tighter OS X software market. Eventually, Apple will face blowback with their control of their ecosystem, especially in performance markets where Macs are already getting hit hard with Apple trying to force Metal and lack of NVidia support. I trust that Apple will do better with ARM and user adoption than Microsoft has, but this will be the result of marketing and customer ignorance of technology. Their success will not be because they are doing things better and it also probably will not be by offering a better path or technology. This is what Apple does well, they provide basic technologies and make people feel good when using them. Apple sells a discount economy car for the price of a luxury car, and then convinces their customers they don't need or want the features or advantages of a real luxury car. Which sadly, works, and the market often follows, and luxury cars one day no longer exist.

My biggest problem with Macs is the atrocious keyboard layout. It's totally braindamaged. Like Delete is Backspace, and Fn+Delete is Delete. And most of the time Command replaces Ctrl on Windows. But sometimes it's still Ctrl. It's a mess. It gets particularly cumbersome when you fire up the terminal. Or a web browser. Oh you want a Print Screen key? Gee, that's too traditional, how about Command+Shift+3? Ooh, you want just the current window with Alt + Print Screen? Nay, you have Command+Shift+4, then spacebar, then click the window. That's so much more convenient, right? Think different! Think different my @rse.

It's sure not 4%. Without testing we have no idea how many people were infected. Also the death rates are being inflated. I know of someone personally who committed suicide during this time. They put COVID-19 on his death certificate and his family had to contest them to get it taken off. EDIT: How little effort did you put into this? A quick Google search puts the highest estimate I saw at 3.4%, and most estimates around 1%. In the UK, they are being under-counted. Up until recently, the death toll only included those dying in hospitals.

  44. Eh no. Here is a thing. If you leave your home unlocked and unattended, could it get robbed? What about just unattended? Don’t allow local access and the problem is non-existent. There are a multitude of ways to break into a device locally. A thunderbolt exploit isn’t even necessary. Um, no... These are mobile devices, NOT IN YOUR HOME, NOT IN A SECURED LOCATION, easily accessible by other people and easily lost. I can walk by a person at Starbucks, and slap in a Thunderbolt FOB - without them noticing and compromised their entire system. The other problem here, is that even kernel DMA protection is not absolute - it helps, but a DMA interface is still exposed externally and easily accessible by strangers. Any company with Thunderbolt on their devices, should have physical key FOBs for the port. PERIOD. You know how I can the you didn’t read the source paper? Because the attack works by getting direct physical access to the Thunderbolt chip inside the computer. Not something generally possible at a Starbucks. Hell, you can even seem him unscrew the bottom part of the laptop case in the embedded video.

The S20 has only 3x, and there's cropping done all over past 1x... and for their super zoom feature, it uses the 64mp lens and crops it to simulate a 3x and higher zoom. You mean more than 3x?
