Google Chrome is getting tab groups, now available in beta
stadii and 4 others reacted to Brandon H for a topic
This is not a great implementation. Chrome doesn't have scrolling tabs, they just continue shrinking once space is used up. The tags take up space on the tab bar so that's all the less space for the tabs themselves. Vivaldi's implementation makes a lot more sense from an organization standpoint to me5 points -

Good for the consumer. Less crappy Streambook like computers that die in a few years or cannot be upgraded will be produced. Now for full blown 64 bit programs, and no more 32 bit default applications (think Steam Client, and assorted other apps). My last i386 machine was upgraded over ten years ago. I think some legacy corporate installs may be hurt by this if they need 16 bit application support. Most industrial computers probably are still on XP. Other than that one drawback (legacy corporate support) there is no reason to not kill 32 bit Windows when most Linux distros and Mac have dropped it. Imagine Windows 10 with only 4GB RAM. Doesn't run too well, especially with other likely entry level or ancient components.4 points -

AmazingRando and one other reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
Ya, interesting Sony got them to demo it on the PS5 - especially considering the technology Unreal is demonstrating was created by Microsoft. (Both Nanite's and Lumen's core technologies come directly from Microsoft and DirectX.) It is encouraging to see the PS5 and Sony supporting these technologies, as things like this could have meant a massive difference in visual quality. I'm very much an Xbox first gamer, but like the idea that everyone gets access to the latest technologies. However, for anyone curious, yes the Xbox Series X also fully supports these technologies, and a bit more.2 points -

Neonix1 and one other reacted to George P for a topic
The two new tech pieces added to v5 have the huge advantage of speeding up development time, specially what Lumen can do, huge time is taken up by devs baking lighting into a scene. Luman is a nice middle ground between the current/old school baked lighting and full real time ray tracing. I can see it helping devs support current gen consoles and older PCs that can't do RT while they have a version with RT for newer consoles and higher end PCs. The key to these two things is how they scale, EPIC says they support a wide range of hardware, which is smart for them of course, so we'll see in time. Still, mid-2021, being able to transfer your UE 4.25 project over to it without issue helps but I don't see games being fully UE5 until 2022 probably.2 points -

I'm unhappy with the removal of the HDMI port. When my work-issued XPS 15 was replaced with an MBP a couple years ago, that was one of the biggest frustrations I had with the Mac. I was always bouncing around between meeting rooms that were only equipped with HDMI cables, so I had to bring a dongle. Other than that, though, man, these look great.2 points -

slightly off topic but the PS Vita and PS TV where such great products that ended up being missed opportunities due to how Sony handled the expandable memory; making it over priced proprietary instead of standard MicroSD. Antivirus only helps so much using an OS and software (especially a web browser) that no longer gets security updates leaves you extremely vulnerable. You may not be downloading anything bad but sites/ads get hacked all the time so you could be infected without even knowing. You could easily become part of a bot net for example which WOULD affect others. ----- And with that I'm closing this thread because nothing of value can come out of it at this point; it's an old abandoned project that's not relevant to modern OSs Thread Locked2 points -
The OnePlus 8 Pro's color filter camera can see through plastic objects
cleverclogs and one other reacted to +Dick Montage for a topic
Sony released a video camera in the early 2000s that had a "super IR" feature for better visibility in low light. I bought said video camera for my nephew to use at my wedding. Turns out, if you used the feature in daylight, it could see through certain layers of fabrics. So, this yielded unusable video because: 1) It was all green-tinted akin to a light nightvision effect 2) You could see which ladies opted to not have a visible panty-line2 points -

Why do people hate the fact that Apple and Google refuse to get together and agree on a common standard so that we don't have to fall back to the ancient SMS as the lowest common denominator? I'm so tired of seeing "Liked an image" or "Loved an image". Apple is just as evil as Google, just in different ways.2 points -

waysidesc and one other reacted to +BudMan for a topic
A pin is a "password" its something you use to auth to the device. So it is a PASSWORD.. its just tied to the device, and not say your MS account!!! Its a local "password" I don't what kind of nonsense wording MS want's to put a around it.. There is no difference between a PIN and a local account password.. Only restriction is that PIN/Password can not be used to auth remotely.. You have to be local to the device. Where a password even if a local account, could be used to auth to the device remotely. The pin is used to unlock a local key, that is used to auth.. The tech behind how it auths you doesn't make it any different than a password - it is something you enter to auth you to the device/system. You understand that a fingerprint is just a "password" as well right.. Its just something you have vs something know. Still a "password" how ever you want to slice it up.2 points -

Why am I the only one who hates the fact that RCS is routed through Google servers and conveniently isn't end-to-end encrypted like iMessages? Not to mention Apple makes most money off selling devices and services like iTunes where Google literally exists by selling user data they hoard so relentlessly. Which automatically makes it a bad idea and probably reason why everyone is hesitating on it. Along with other adoption requirements.2 points -

possible to disable password based login in Windows 10 ?
+Dick Montage reacted to +BudMan for a topic
Or just don't set a password... My nephew finally brought his laptop over so I could upgrade it to 10.. He has no password... He just clicks login He uses the laptop at home, it doesn't go anywhere with it. Its not open to the net, etc. etc. He clicks login - no need to enter anything.. So please explain why you think having a pin is something you want, while not having a password? Just do not understand the point... You either put something in to login to the device, or you don't - be it you call it a pin, or a password means nothing.. You auth or you don't - period. Only reason to have a password, is you actually want to auth to the machine remotely - file shares/RDP... Or you want your account to auth to another file share on your network, with its password.. same username/password combo, etc. To be honest the only reason MS came up with the whole pin thing, is some hope that users wouldn't not be using some ###### password as their login for their MS account Which they want the users to use to auth to their machines... So they came up with a way for a user to put in 1234, and hopefully their MS password would be of some actual strength... Cuz gawd forbid users have to type in more than couple of characters or remember something longer than 6 characters in length.. Why even setup a pin if your going to setup "hello" just have it rec your face.. Then you don't have to type in anything either1 point -

Comcast's insisting on an upgrade.
+Kyle reacted to PGHammer for a topic
As of now, Comcast has been requiring that DOCSIS 3.0 and earlier cable AND telephony modems be replaced with DOCSIS 3.1 gear since 1 January 2020; this includes their own telephony modems. While I have an ARRIS SB-6183 cable modem - we also have a leased (from Comcast) telephony modem; that is the next planned replacement; hence my interest in the Motorola MT-7711. The problem is that the price of the MT-7711 increased - largely due to the COVID-19 shutdown. (And I wish I were kidding; look at the price merely on Amazon since 1 January of 2020.) The SB-6183 AKA "Blue Thunder" is not only still running like a steel trap, Comcast actually bumped up the throughput on the cable modem side (from Performance Pro to Blast) at an extra cost of none (COVID-19 again).1 point
