  3. Microsoft shows off its Edge browser running on Linux

They were running Unix and Linux 20 years ago. Gates never had issues with Linux, Microsoft had issues with the restrictions of several open sources licenses that were too restrictive or took ownership of code that was not previously open source, aka GPL. Windows NT shipped with a full POSIX subsystem, Microsoft owned Xenix, and if it a Unix like model had been more advanced, it could have been used instead of creating NT. (Cutler never liked Unix, due to its limitations and simplistic model that was and is a glorified I/O manager, and not so much an OS technology. "Getta Byte, Getta Byte, Getta Byte" was something he said to make fun of Unix, being simplistic and outdated in the early 80s, let alone how outdated it was in 1990 or FFS it still is in 2020.) Microsoft had the SUA for a replacement to the POSIX subsystem, which they bought since they didn't want to spend time creating a Unix subsystem for NT. They did have test Linux builds running in a subsystem as well, but these were just in case Linux ever gained traction. Linux just isn't new for Microsoft, they fully support Linux on Azure and has been providing code to Linux specifically for over 25 years. At one time, Microsoft was one of the largest contributors to the Linux kernel, and this was like 15 years ago. They are still like the #1 or #2 contributor to OSS projects in the history of computing. I'm glad you brought this up, as Gates has always been about 'the best' technology being the most accessible. I could see him even writing Edge chromium code for Linux himself, as he didn't consider programming beneath him, like Jobs or other CEOs in the industry.

  7. Apple releases iOS 13.5 with Exposure Notification API

One thing I absolutely love about iPhone is updates. I see news like this, check on my phone for updates and the update is there. Just a wishful thinking on basically any Android. Even when I had Android phone which had live update ready, they were always some regional BS which meant I had to wait days or even weeks in order to get them. So bloody annoying.

I haven't watched any of it, but maybe she just didn't like the direction. And while I get the source comic has her as a lesbian, so they're faithful to it, maybe the whole thing was becoming to political?

  9. iPhone 12 may not come with EarPods in the box

It has been suggested that the starting price will be $50 lower than the current iPhone 11 so cheaper phone. Most iPhone users probably have at least 1 pair in a drawer somewhere anyways. First time buyers will likely want AirPods anyways and even if you wanted to get the wired ones, total price is still $20 cheaper than the phone it is replacing

Agree with alot above, should be focussed on the Supe's doing their thing! Sue, some relationship kinda stuff to fluff the story line, but not constant relationship angst and whining! And also to echo i dont care about their orientation or anything, just give us the show it was supposed to be. If they followed the kind of format, as for example, The Boys... plenty dirty supe's action, and some fluff, thats fine. There is enough rubbish 90% of the show relationship drama shows already.

  13. Ruby Rose Quits Batwoman on The CW.

That's the problem. They seem to be focusing more on the stupid relationships than on what the show is really about. I understand that they are on a limited budget and maybe these relationship B.S scenes are there to save money on visual effects heavy scenes but they need to tone them down. I don't care to see Supergirl's sister kissing and making out with her girlfriend every 15 mins. Same with Batwoman. I want to see the superhero stuff. If I wanted to see relationships drama for a whole hour, I would go watch The Young and The Restless.

  16. Acquired a Gateway P5-133 for some Retro Gaming.

Yesterday I acquired a Gateway p5 133. Boy does this computer bring back memories. I'm going to use it for some old school dos gaming. The computer came with 16 megs of memory which probably would have been ok, but I wanted to add more. I was worried such an old machine might take a special type of memory that I might not have but nope, I had a box full of it! So I upgraded it to 64 megs. When I went out to my shed, into my tub of REALLY old audio card, I came across an ESS ISA card. Turns out that is one of the best Sound Blaster clone cards. Installed it and it works great. I also have an STB PCI graphics card which I’m not sure if it has any 3d graphics acceleration. I guess I'll find out when I install the drivers. What should be arriving by the end of the week is a Compact Flash to PCI adapter. This will allow me to put in a compact flash card, into the back of the computer. It also allows me to remove it and plug it into a card reader so I can easily transfer files to and from the old computer, because that machine is a pain to take the case off. While I wait for a CF card to IDE and the CF card, I just pull the hard drive out and hook it up to a spare workstation I have setup, then just boot in to a PE environment and transfer some files to the hard drive and connect it back to the gateway. I'm going to be using that for the time being until my compact flash card and reader arrives. I had originally thought about upgrading the CD drive and using CD-RW disks. I did find a brand new sealed RW disk that wasn't even opened but had some issues burning the disk. I have quite the collection of IDE and Sata CD/DVD drives to choose from. Installed some dos games and they run great. Also installed Windows 95 tonight, and that 64 megs of ram really speeds things up. My Ram collection IDE / Sata CD / DVD / Collection Sata Cable Collection IDE Cable collection Power cord collection Floppy Drive Colleciton Video Card collection (At least would I could find laying around) There photos were taking with a cell phone Really old Modems I found in my shed

Going back a bit, but season 5 of Buffy. She was basically crying and whining and essentially NOT slaying vampires every episode. It was about her dealing with loss, everyone suddenly making out. Basically, not the show that the premise was built around. Showrunners should take a step back and ask: What is this show called? What is it's core premise? If it's called "People having relationships and sometimes they also fight crime in costumes" then they are doing well.

I agree. I have nothing against gay people, but the whole gay relationships B.S needs to stop. Like seriously. It's like half of every episode is Lesbian drama. Same with Supergirl. When Supergirl started in CBS, it was great. Then they moved it to The CW and they began with the Lesbian relationships B.S. These are super hero shows. They need to concentrate on the super hero stuff and drop the stupid relationships drama crap that nobody gives a sh.... about. On top of that, they are supposed to be family shows. What family is going to let their kids watch two women or two men kiss and sleep with each other on TV? Come on. Like you said, they need to start getting dark and dirty and drop the damn gay drama crap. This is not the show for that kind of thing. This past season of Supergirl has been the most boring and senseless of them all. Batwoman ratings aren't exactly great so I was surprised they renewed it for another season.

  25. Spotify is adding Joe Rogan's podcast as its latest exclusive

This is not a good idea. I understand Spotify can guarantee more stable advertisement income, but moving exclusively to a single platform will severely decrease the podcast popularity. Currently, if you want to watch/listen, you fire up youtube on you web browser and you're good to go. Want to send a link to a friend? You do it, they click it, they hear it. With Spotify this will no longer be the case - sure, it will remain free, but you will be required to create an account. Not everyone will want to do this, no matter how quick and painless that process might be. The time of pirating free podcasts from torrents is upon us?

  27. Project Reunion is Microsoft's new plan to unify UWP and Win32

I agree, somewhat... Microsoft integration and consolidating the frameworks and UI technologies has been a hot mess trying to adapt to the crazy 90 and 180 degree application layer changes. Note though, you are conflating a few things that are just not related and don't require any work for legacy software support or merging the technologies forward. For example there is no bringing forward DOS/Win16 age anything. Also the 32bit and 64bit frameworks are essentially identical, requiring nothing old being brought forward. Just cause Win32 development sounds like it is 32bit, it isn't. The original design of NT used the Win32 subsystem and framework, which was replaced with a 40bit and 64bit version on the Dec Alpha in the 90s and Windows XP 64bit editions for AMD64 and now dead IA64 platforms. Windows' Win32 has been a fully 64bit framework for nearly 20 years, meaning there is no additional work to deal with 32bit code. See SysWow64 to understand how this works and how 32bit and 64bit co-exist on Windows x64.(On AMD/Intel this is additionally transparent with binary transparency to the OS, due to how AMD64 works. Even on ARM, 32bit x86 binaries run in a similar manner, but through the translation layer.) There is no need to kill Win32, Windows doesn't carry the weight with it that a similar technology does on other OSes. Win32 can live on forever and still work, even if its subsystem is fully separated. However, even now portions of DirectX and UWP still run inside the Win32 subsystem. Hopefully this will change, but even then, Win32 just becomes a secondary Subsystem, and like the Linux subsystem can just run if needed, without adding any work or resource consumption when it is not actively being used. In summary... WinUI is the latest in a series of messes at Microsoft, and I agree with that sentiment completely; however, the legacy transition of the existing frameworks won't be the issue if they ever can settle on a true path forward - maybe this is it, even though it has changed a couple times since November 2019. I know diddly squat about all these sorts of things but had, naively, always assumed Win32 meant 32-bit. Thanks for an educational post. Although I won’t lie. Most of it went over my head. You should take everything that Mobius Enigma writes about Microsoft with at least a grain of salt.

  30. AT&T definitely milked this as a marketing gimmick, but 5G itself is such a mess with the various spectrums it covers. Even some of the true 5G is going to use the same frequency as LTE, but with a wider bandwidth, so it's really one big cloudy mess. I wouldn't say AT&T is necessarily wrong, but they're clearly being a bit deceptive.

Sorry, but just no. This is the stupidest thing ever. You're using a social network, the whole point is that what you post is shown, you know, socially. There are plenty of other ways to post your content if all you want to do is make an announcement, or just chat with one or more individuals. At the end of the day though, it's up to the tweeter. I for one though will be taking a dim view of anybody continuing to use social media who chooses to remove the social aspect of their posts and uses it solely to grandstand.

  36. Mafia Trilogy includes a remake, a remaster, and a re-release

I don't know when you played it, but I got it on release. It was buggy as hell, you could sit down with the group of enemies in sight and they will magically unsee you. it was a joke to play. maybe they fixed it with patches, but by that time I lost interest and moved on. I am really looking forward to Mafia 1 though... Wonder if they keep that 1 race super hard, I think I spend over 5 hours to win 1 single race to move on... The first game was so good, I just kept on trying again and again. Nowadays, some games story takes only 5 hours. The race is not that hard. Just don't drive like a lunatic and use brakes. dustojnikhummer ; did you play it pre-patch? ; because after they patched the game the racing mission was a lot easier to win to where unless you suck at racing games you will comfortably win. but prior to the patch it takes many retries to where it's almost luck since you have to drive pretty much perfectly to win.

Hopefully the same family that would watch a man and woman kiss and sleep with each other on TV. Or neither. Lesbian, Gay, Straight, Asexual relationships are all part of everyday life and as such, IF a show wishes to explore chartacter development and world building, then they should be part of that too. My issue has nothing to do with sexuality but more to do with the need for such character development. You're making a superhero show, not Pride and Prejudice - tone back the relationships just a bit and focus on your superhero storylines. Take Smallville, how many episodes were about the human characters and their love interests, or even involving Kal-El as Clark (being a "human"). I don't give a rats ass, if I wanted to watch that I'd not be watching a superhero show - I accept a level of it, just don't need it to be the focus.

  39. Limited edition The Last of Us Part II themed PS4 Pro bundle announced

I keep hearing this complaint. Yet I never ever was bothered by the PS4 pro noise. Either you are more sensitive or you are playing it with volume way down. Either way, a headset might help This is not meant as offensive or a joke, btw. Just genuinely surprised why people complain about something that seems a non issue to me and anyone I know It is a non-issue to you, and a lot of people; however, using the PS4 Pro in quieter environments and as media devices can make the sound difference an issue. It can at times be louder than ambient music in games, which shouldn't happen. Just to be clear, the PS4 Pro is NOT Super bad. One issue is the type of noise it produces, as it does sound a bit like a Jet revving up for take off. It isn't super loud like a Jet, just has that timbre. The other issue is that compared to the more power Xbox One X (and S), it is quite a bit louder; which seems inconsistent and is not Sony's best work in a quiet thermal design. (In Sony's defense, one reason the Xbox One S/X can get by with less fan noise, is due to how NT thermally manages the CPU/GPU threads, a feature Sony is adding to the upcoming PS5, which hopefully pays off with thermals and sound.)

  43. TSMC stops taking orders from Huawei following US ban

But the thing is, so much of the world has rallied behind US/China for their needs that any effect on these 2 countries sends massive ripples across the planet. Some have but that isn't going to change the realities of the world which is, every country and a lot of companies want good access to the market of China and China will likely play on that by allowing some countries in at the expense of others. This could be a massive blunder for the US if China plays hard ball and makes it difficult for America corporations to do business in China whiles say allowing European and Asian ones in, think of the advantage that would give those countries and corporations at the expense of the US. Some might not like this but China is a massive market with a big consumer base, it would be crazy to ignore that and like I said, if the US keeps pushing, China could make life a lot more difficult for the US whiles opening up more benefits for others and that would have a ripple effect. Let's put it another way, Say China bans Boeing in its market and allows Airbus to keep selling in the market, that would be a massive win for Airbus that could make it difficult for Boeing to compete with them because Airbus will still be selling on the world market whiles selling in China, China can play these games on the US and the cost to the US could be very high.

seta-san - I applied that to *all* governments in an RWI thread - not just the United States. My reasoning is similar, if not identical to yours - strategic resources should never - as in ever - be outsourced if at all possible - not even to an *ally* - alliances change. (Does it apply if the ally in question is the United States? Yes - I won't let the US as an ally off the hook; the allliances of the United States are subject to change.) The fact that I'm an American saying that gets me MANY strange looks.

  47. I have the same exact problem with my setup, it's a Nvidia 2070 RTX Super with a CRG90 (ultrawide) FreeSync screen. If I enable G-SYNC I have to ensure that it is set to full screen mode, because Windowed mode causes flickering on my screen. Without knowing your actual hardware setup, I can only tell you what fixed my flickering issues. You might also need to look into supported refresh modes for your monitor, setting it lower or higher may eliminate the flickering too. And my last suggestion is to look how you are powering the screen, is it on a powerstrip? Maybe ensure that the screen is in the first socket (nearest the power cable from the strip to the wall) if you have it in a strip, because other powered devices may be affecting the screen too.
