Alexis Ohanian, co-founder and board member of Reddit, resigns
+E.Worm Jimmy and 15 others reacted to GrandMaster for a topic
"I have resigned as a member of the reddit board, I have urged them to fill my seat with a black candidate" That's just racist. People should be hired based on merit. Imagine if there was a requirement for a white candidate, people would loose their ######. Yet we're supposed to believe that blacks are somehow disadvantaged when they can riot and loot and face zero consequences. Talk about being a protected class...16 points -

What a racist jackass. There is literally ZERO reason to do something like this unless he walked into Reddit and got employed solely because he was white. In which case Reddit is the problem, not him. I like to call idiots who do this kind of ###### "woke racists". He thinks he's so tolerant and accepting by pulling stunt like this yet in reality, he's doing the most racist thing ever. Also, imagine being that black person replacing him. You'd eternally have a feeling (and also perception by everyone else) you're there only because you're black and not because you're good at what you do.6 points -

ADJECTIVE Racist: "prejudiced against or antagonistic toward a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized." Do you need those bolded words defined too? Then you are clearly not understanding what you are quoting nor what the issue is in this case. You may want to go back to the speech Chris Rock made when he got to host the Oscars. Especially the response he got from both the hispanic and asian community. In short their response to that speech was: "black people are as worse as white people when it comes to racism". In this case and in current protests you are seeing the exact same thing. People think there are only 2 races when in reality there are more. All the other races should have an equal chance of getting that position. I understand that you have to do an extreme thing such as exclude a white person in order to fix the current issue but that doesn't mean you also have to exclude every other race that isn't black nor does it make it right. Excluding the other ones as well is what makes this action racism. They haven't learned a single thing from the Oscars. If we (aka humanity) want to change the situation then learning from the Oscars is critical.3 points -

First of all, what he wants is for a qualified black individual to take over his position. Secondly, you can talk meritocracy but until black children have equal access to education and the same amount of social mobility as white children then there are going to be clear disadvantages for the black population, hence the need for this type of affirmative action. Btw, affirmative action continues to be responsible for allowing white women in the United States and white men from poorer/rural regions in the United States to get increased education and economic opportunities; and the reasons are similar for why this action is also necessary for black individuals (people born in marginalized poorer community, very low social mobility, insufficient access to education, and fewer economic opportunities often by virtue of the region they live in). Finally, the protests in the United States, especially the more recent ones, have largely been peaceful. All you need is some group of opportunists to cause harm (many of whom were not black mind you, the looters were from many different backgrounds with different motivations). Moreover, I am quite surprised you are calling black individuals a protected class when the very reason behind these protests are police violence and killings that disproportionately impacts the black population. If they were of a protected class then incidents such as the murder of George Floyd would not have happened (amongst many other similar incidents).3 points -
How to fix the Optane Memory Pinning Error on Windows 10 May 2020 Update
ShahinD and one other reacted to George P for a topic
MS probably didn't list it because there was a driver update already out before the v2004 Windows update went out. I don't know who's to blame but it sounds like intel didn't push or have the newer driver up on WU in time or something to that extent. So the update installs with a older version it has on record. OEMs need to make sure they have the newest drivers on record before OS updates are go out. Sounds like someone, probably at intel, dropped the ball.2 points -

"First of all, what he wants is for a qualified black individual to take over his position. " That's racist. Positions should be based solely on merit, not on genitals or skin color. "you can talk meritocracy but until black children have equal access to education and the same amount of social mobility as white children then there are going to be clear disadvantages for the black population " Blacks have special treatment in education. Whites and Asians are penalized in SAT scores. Blacks have preferential placement in Colleges. Black schools get more government funding than white or hispanic schools and perform much worse. "I am quite surprised you are calling black individuals a protected class when the very reason behind these protests are police violence and killings that disproportionately impacts the black population " Whites are killed more often than blacks in same-case scenarios. For 100,000 violent arrests 4 whites are killed vs 3 blacks killed per 100,000 violent arrests. Blacks, while being a minority of population commit over half of all violent crime. Black on white crime is 9x more prevalent than white on black crime. Yet whites, asians, and hispanics do not riot.2 points -

I hope his position is handed to a qualified individual.... I don't care the race or gender or what they identify as as long as they are qualified... but if he insists it goes to a black person over someone else (indian, asian, etc) that in itself is kinda racist isn't it? I thought there were also laws that prevent from hiring people based on their race as a key qualifier?2 points -

Yay or nay? Made an app that adds Aero Glass, Start Menu on Windows 10
margrave reacted to DrainTheSw4mp for a topic
What the title says. I got sick and tired of the included Windows 10 theme, and the slow Start Screen. Now I think it looks perfect. Why make my own? I know there's Window Blinds which is incredibly slow (it uses GDI instead of HW-accelerated Direct2D), doesn't even have blur behind the glass and there's also Glass8 (I think that's what it's called?) but is exceptionally hacky and, I would say, shady. My implementation is not perfect, but it doesn't add a single line of low-level rendering code, doesn't break any application (so far) and it's all (theme+start menu) contained into a single library. On the other hand, it's largely unoptimized, thus DWM memory consumption increased to about 70mb (still nothing compared to most apps). There's some work ahead before I can even release an installer but it can be done if a good amount of people is even interested. Using the flat built in Windows 10 theme:1 point -

Going through someone's server, of course you'll need to authenticate. Down the road it'll probably support multiple devices if it doesn't already (think Pushbullet), going to be required anyway. Almost every service like this requires a centralized server, only one coming to mind that doesn't is KDE Connect, and that's limited to a one way connection, when it works at all.1 point -

Doubtful. "The feature will require Windows 10 October October 2018 Update or later and Android 7.0+ smartphone." and the Editor's first screenshot shows a OnePlus 6T smartphone. Just asking since a lot of Your Phone features are Samsung and OnePlus exclusive. I think screen mirroring still is. Would love the screen mirroring feature but they made it Samsung / weird Bluetooth requirement only. No idea why they didn't open it up to other android phones via WiFi. Would be a pretty useful feature if I could just keep my phone on a charger whilst using the surface. Dell Mobile Connect. I got that to work on my BT4.2 card soo1 point -

Objecting to people being harmed and killed is now woke? WTF? Except that these things have nothing to do with why the protests are happening. True for the game companies it is free PR and then more time to prepare stuff for events and DLC. UbiSoft did it right. They donated a huge sum to the cause. They didn’t cancel anything. In fact they released their Anno 1800 DLC weeks earlier because it was already done. Ironically they aren’t a US company. But many others just scream how hard they care without doing anything that benefits themselves.1 point -

The meritocracy that you allude towards is what we should be aiming for but it will only work once people have equal access to education and the economy. There are disadvantaged groups within the US, including but certainly not limited to the black population (also women, white individuals from rural and poorer regions, LGBTQ people, etc) that are more likely to be born in situations where they do not have access to adequate education and/or do not they have the resources to move to regions with better educational and vocational opportunities. Affirmative action, which not only benefits racialized minorities but also women and those of disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds, was always meant to be temporary until the issues that prevented individuals from these communities to gain similar access to education and economy, however those issues have not been addressed and there have even been regressions (such as with access to post-secondary education). Removing affirmative action prematurely and relying only on meritocracy when significant portions of the United States have far fewer economic and educational opportunities is only going to serve to marginalize those groups further. If what you say is true (I'm not a US citizen) then it's quite ironic that the US is called "land of opportunities" when there are opportunities only for a selected group of people. I think that meritocracy is a good thing - otherwise you're just throwing progress and potential in the trash for the sake of utopian equality which is an unachievable goal to being with. I'm also quite surprised that women are considered a disadvantaged group in the US. Seems like they have a lot to catch up with Europe. Society over economy people! Always. To be fair, putting any nation under a critical lens will reveal inequalities and points of tension. For example, I am Canadian, and as much as I love my country I will not deny that there are issues we need to resolve regarding the way we have treated our indigenous population. In addition, the United States exhibits a large number of positive points as well, both historically but even now.1 point -

Whatever the industry, if one says #metoo, dozens more pop up because they want to avoid blacklash of not being in tone at the end of they day, they don't care. They just don't want to lose customers. Or 'fans' (for example you work for Microsoft but follow Nike). this has been happening of DECADES so it's tiresome because you know deep inside, they do it because other companies do it. Which, I don't care...let them be FREE. I don't like folks decide the company posture. Don't like it, it's your problem. It's always sensitive topics...1 point -
