First of all, what he wants is for a qualified black individual to take over his position. Secondly, you can talk meritocracy but until black children have equal access to education and the same amount of social mobility as white children then there are going to be clear disadvantages for the black population, hence the need for this type of affirmative action. Btw, affirmative action continues to be responsible for allowing white women in the United States and white men from poorer/rural regions in the United States to get increased education and economic opportunities; and the reasons are similar for why this action is also necessary for black individuals (people born in marginalized poorer community, very low social mobility, insufficient access to education, and fewer economic opportunities often by virtue of the region they live in). Finally, the protests in the United States, especially the more recent ones, have largely been peaceful. All you need is some group of opportunists to cause harm (many of whom were not black mind you, the looters were from many different backgrounds with different motivations). Moreover, I am quite surprised you are calling black individuals a protected class when the very reason behind these protests are police violence and killings that disproportionately impacts the black population. If they were of a protected class then incidents such as the murder of George Floyd would not have happened (amongst many other similar incidents).2 points -

Going through someone's server, of course you'll need to authenticate. Down the road it'll probably support multiple devices if it doesn't already (think Pushbullet), going to be required anyway. Almost every service like this requires a centralized server, only one coming to mind that doesn't is KDE Connect, and that's limited to a one way connection, when it works at all. The idea of authenticating in such a manner simply to access one's phone that is stored locally is ludicrous to me ! There are other ways to do this. It's not being DONE locally, waysidedc - it's being done via the Internet. For that reason alone, an Authentication Authority that works via the Internet is a needful. It's why I asked what the REAL issue is - that there is one at all - or who the AA is. To be fair, Dell Mobile Connect does not need any drivers. But hey, it is MS's service Then why do I have this "Dell-Mobile-Connect-Driver_2MGX1_WIN_1.2_A00" hmm? I meant DMC does not require any authentication/account. I'm thinking of one thing and typing something else.1 point -
Microsoft Edge 83.0.478.45 (offline installer)
KaoDome reacted to James W. for a topic
x64 version of all Chromium browsers including Chrome, installs into x86 folder. That was a known issue for years, Google doesn't fix it. I sent a feedback to Edge team for that months ago but they did nothing, maybe it's a Chromium problem. Opera doesn't, the 64-bit version is installed to the right folder when installed system-wide. I'd say it has more to do with them not caring about it than anything else, since it works just fine the way it's installed now. Besides, all making an installer that chooses the right folder is trivial Consistency seems unimportant for many devs. Opera's installation destination is not even Program Files (x86 or x64) folder. Default destination is C:\Users[system profile]\AppData\ And that isn't the right folder either, and it's odder. True, it does work just fine although it's a pear in the apple basket. And Google/Microsoft being just lazy to fix it. If Microsoft seperated x64 and x86 folders, I wonder why it would let x64 programs into x86 folder. If those folders are not different, why seperated them in the first place. By the way, I never seen any other program installing itself into wrong Program Files folder before. You had me double check but yep, the installer creates a folder in %ProgramFiles% when the installation is for all users and in %LocalAppData% for an installation per user: https://giphy.com/gifs/dZdz2zP3mTPrsym1hg" rel="external nofollow">https://giphy.com/gifs/dZdz2zP3mTPrsym1hg Seems appropriate to me, standard users may not have access to other locations and things in %LocalAppData% don't get roamed as the name implies. Off the top of my head I don't recall any pure 64-bit app that was installed to %ProgramFiles(x86)% instead, but I've seen many that ship with both 32 and 64-bit binaries and the go over there by default. Probably I didn't pay attention and just installed it as default, so wasn't aware of that fact. Thank you. I don't install many programs, but as I just checked, all x64 programs are in Program Files, and all x86 are in Program Files (x86). That's why having x64 Chromium browsers -except Opera- in Program Files (x86) bothers me. And why these browsers still don't fix it, shouldn't be that difficult.1 point -

Intel Core i9-10900K review: For a top-end gaming build
PeterTHX reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
Cooling isn't hard, and power usage isn't much different than its predecessor. The lowered IHS makes all the new 10 series Intel CPUs run cooler than the 9 series. As for benchmarks, there are a ton of online tests in real world gaming, and this is essentially the fastest consumer processor for raw gaming FPS. I would recommend the AMD 3900X to most people over this processor, but if they only care about pure gaming performance, this is the the CPU for them. The 10600K is also impressive in games, and like the 10900K, rules the single thread core performance, beating the Zen 2 Ryzen.1 point -

The meritocracy that you allude towards is what we should be aiming for but it will only work once people have equal access to education and the economy. There are disadvantaged groups within the US, including but certainly not limited to the black population (also women, white individuals from rural and poorer regions, LGBTQ people, etc) that are more likely to be born in situations where they do not have access to adequate education and/or do not they have the resources to move to regions with better educational and vocational opportunities. Affirmative action, which not only benefits racialized minorities but also women and those of disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds, was always meant to be temporary until the issues that prevented individuals from these communities to gain similar access to education and economy, however those issues have not been addressed and there have even been regressions (such as with access to post-secondary education). Removing affirmative action prematurely and relying only on meritocracy when significant portions of the United States have far fewer economic and educational opportunities is only going to serve to marginalize those groups further. If what you say is true (I'm not a US citizen) then it's quite ironic that the US is called "land of opportunities" when there are opportunities only for a selected group of people. I think that meritocracy is a good thing - otherwise you're just throwing progress and potential in the trash for the sake of utopian equality which is an unachievable goal to being with. I'm also quite surprised that women are considered a disadvantaged group in the US. Seems like they have a lot to catch up with Europe. Society over economy people! Always. To be fair, putting any nation under a critical lens will reveal inequalities and points of tension. For example, I am Canadian, and as much as I love my country I will not deny that there are issues we need to resolve regarding the way we have treated our indigenous population. In addition, the United States exhibits a large number of positive points as well, both historically but even now.1 point -

hellowalkman reacted to Steven P. for a topic
You know what else "isn't what it used to be"? Hardware. There is -so- much more of it than 15 years ago. Thousands of motherboards relased over the last decade.... dozens of new CPUs every year.... a whole bunch of different GPU chipsets, multiplied by many vendors selling several variants of each chipset.... a much wider variety of complex connectivity standards than ever before.... many, many combinations of RAM sizes, speeds, and latency timings. On and on and on. And that's before we get to quality variances with individual pieces of hardware. Maybe a particular component on a particular entry-level motherboard doesn't do very well with a certain amount of PSU ripple, and will cause some kind of failure once every month or so, and only in areas where the user's original source of power isn't clean. Do you see? It is basically impossible to test everything now. Sorry but that is a poor excuse, I am old enough to remember in the 90's being even more to choose from, Cyrix CPUs were also a mainstream thing and GPUs didn't even have the standard like the mainly two choices you see today between AMD and Nvidia, and their respective lines of GPUs also are based off one same-gen of tech (Pascal, Turing etc). 68k is correct and it isn't limited to Microsoft, companies keep putting beta products in the hands of consumers who have to suffer throughn the first gen of hardware and software releases due to a lack of proper QA.1 point -
Apple is tracking down looted devices in the U.S.

they stole nothing from you but Apple steals from you by avoiding paying taxes and for some reasons you prefer to target your anger towards the ones who stole nothing from you the defenders of capitalism are a weird species They didn't just target apple, they targetted everything. Including small non-chain/family owned stores - do you think it's fair on them? Do you think that it's fair that they might have to shut their businesses down due to the reduced turnout from corona and now the huge cost to repair their store and replace all their stolen stock? And quite frankly your reasoning of tax is absurd, that is altogether an entirely different thing, this isn't about tax. And just for your information, the people that end up paying for this is the ordinary citizen that doesn't go looting. Stores have to make the profit back up, so they raise the prices to compensate and you pay more, and they probably keep pay rises lower or stop them entirely too. Great, screw over the hard working people...1 point -
