  1. Files UWP is a new modern file explorer app for Windows 10

Funny you say that, I noticed that at work. We had an application logging things and needed to launch multiple instances of it. Each instanced used about 500MB of RAM! It wasn't even a complex application, we needed to run 20 or so instances on an old test machine with 4GB of RAM and the C# developer said 'buy more RAM'... Created my own small logger in C++ with Qt, 4MB RAM usage per instance. C shite as I call it can ###### right off, horrible language. Correction, you were working with a ###### developer. There is no reason C# should be that heavy, or much heavier than native C++ due to how the shared framework works. C# can often be smaller and use significantly less RAM than the same code in C++. Object design is something many developers are ###### at, and if they are ###### at object design, using and object model in a programming language will also be ######. Sadly OO development tools and languages get blamed for their incompetence.

  3. You never went to history class in school, did you? For a lot of people in history, protesting on the street was the only way they could protest because they either weren't allowed to vote, or weren't considered to be people.

  4. It. Shouldn't. Have. Happened. In. The. First. Place. Did you forget what this protesting is all about? Let me remind you, unwarrented police brutality.

  5. Seeing as you seem to be missing the most basic of human emotions; empathy, I'll explain what the right thing to do was. Instead of just calling for a medic and walking away without even looking back to see if one was responding (he didn't), he should have immediately knelt to attend to the civilian HIMSELF, whilst still calling for a medic. All cops are trained with basic first aid and he should have been rendering some whilst waiting for a proper medic.

  8. Because it's the right thing to do as a cop. What if the medics were called away for some other reason and didn't get to this guy? Bleeding from the ear could be a critical injury. I find interesting that people are trying to defend his actions and blame the victim. Nope. Was it right of the cop to shove the man for no reason? The question I posed was to put things into perspective because people today are desensitized when other people are hurt and that's not a good thing.

Modern* Looks bland like every other modern app. No colored icons and 90% functionality missing.

Really, cause I think you don't have a clue what you are talking about. (Because, unless they are using unrelease libraries, there is no such thing as a C++ UWP App, which I'm sure you know, right?) Surprise people with your insight, present a few code examples demonstrating why it is bad.

Hah, this is probably the most ill informed nonsense I've read here in a while. Doubly so considering UWP C# apps are actually precompiled into native code using .NET Native and are not actually running on a .NET interpreter, and have start up times that rival native C++ XAML apps.

  15. Kind of defeats the purpose of protesting than. You do realize protesting is in part how the US came about right?

  19. Again, I'm not complaining about them calling the medic. I'm pointing out the fact the cop could careless the damage he did by violently knocking the guy down. IMHO that is wrong. How is it an uncommon situation? Man walks up to a cop a few seconds later gets knocked on his ass, hard for no reason. I agree common sense varies between people but here we are with you arguing with me that my common sense is wrong and yours is right. From a different angle, How is pointing out the facts and asking a question is moving the "goalpost" and resorting to splitting hairs? Where did I make up motivations? Did the cop stop to see if the guy he knocked down is ok or not? Did one cop stop another cop from assisting or not? All I'm pointing out is (the lack of) human decency. If someone fell down next to you, would continue to walk away, or stop and see if that person is ok?
    2 points
  20. I'm not denouncing the call for the medic. In fact that the cop knocked down the guy so hard (that he started bleeding from the ear) a call for a medic was done and they didn't even taking a moment to assist the person that was knocked down. There were plenty of cops to cover just one cop till the medic arrived.

  22. Eh. I don't care if the cop who shoved him did CPR, a craniectomy and the National Guard erected an EMEDS for him ... he still shouldn't have been shoved to the ground. Seems people are wanting to give the cops a cookie for calling for a medic after they needlessly injured him.
    2 points
  23. No offense but you are being an armchair expert as well. Neither of us know exactly what was going through the cops mind after forcibly knocking him down and him calling the medic and walking away. What's being argued is the insensitiveness of the cop and in the context of unnecessary police brutality along with the police report cover-up.

  24. If that were the case, then America would still be a British colony as most of America's population supported the British government back when the War of Independence got going. It was only a small minority of protesters that kicked the whole thing off. Protesting is vital in a free society. Violent protests, whilst deeply unpleasant, are sometimes the ONLY way to force needed change; especially when the government stops listening to its people.

  27. A peaceful protest never warrants the use of force. Even if you don't agree with the message, you still have the right to counter-protest. My main question is why you think the only correct way to protest is by voting? Something that we have seen can be manipulated by unfair and unjust laws that target minorities, to redistricting areas to ensure whichever party wins? Voting is still a good way to let you voice be heard, but it is in no way the only or even the best in most situations. Even if we got rid of the electoral collage in the general election and went solely with the majority vote, this still gives voice to the majority and leaves out the minority opinions. While these are usually unpopular, protesting can make up for lack of knowledge that may otherwise be overlooked. One more question, did you support the protests to reopen most states by people brandishing guns and some using the threats of violence?

  33. Apple might announce its plans for ARM MacBooks at WWDC

I think it's a good move. Apple's chips are way ahead of the competition, so that emulation may not be as painful like it is with the Pro X, plus these devices are probably going to include next gen chips will be even better. They'll probably do it right, we just haven't seen anyone do it well yet so its hard to imagine. I think Apple will just ditch any emulation and will force developers to go ARM. Developers follow Apple, not Microsoft. Hell, Chrome still does not have a WoA version I don't think so; there would still need to be a transition period otherwise people would complain that they can't install their normal apps like Chrome etc. (same reason the ARM version of Windows 8 crashed and burned) That is the point. ARM MacBook's userbase will be significantly larger than WoA combined so developers will be quick to port their apps. Oh I don't disagree but not all devs are speedy, especially depending on how big/complex the app is so a transition period is essential. Doesn't have to be long, maybe for 2 or 3 major versions before it's phased out. I still think developers like Google, Adobe, Microsoft and such will be very, very quick to port their apps to MacOSARM. Again, the install base will be significantly bigger than all of WoA devices combined. I would not be surprised if those companies already had MacOSARM Devkits Not likely; those big guys are the ones that took the longest the last time. And I'm not talking about PowerPC to x86, I'm talking about switching to 64bit. Adobe almost didn't have their products switched to 64bit in time on MacOS before Apple pulled the plug on 32bit support. What makes you think they'll be any quicker with this transition?

  34. The way they evolved NTFS seems to return inaccurate aggregate folder size calculations -- "seems" is the keyword, I don't know exactly why but i vaguely recall similar discussions back in the Windows Longhorn days. Thats more trickier than any illiterate user can imagine, as there are at least 2 different sizes that should be displayed: 1 is the true size of the files, and the 2nd value would be the ALLOCATED size. Why these 2 differ? Because filesystem cluster allocation wastes some disk space (gets more visible if you store thousands of very small files), and the other more relevant reason is hardlinking of the same file into multiple instances: the file physically occupies storage space only 1 time, but virtually can be represented as multiple copies each taking up the full storage space, when in fact its not happening, but misleads the illiterate user in a split second. Thatswhy they think the WinSXS folder under c:\windows is so f.ing huge. But when you observer its folder size, you see the huge difference between REPORTED size and ACTUAL allocated space on disk.

For me it is not a file explorer if it has no tree view. I want to see all parent and sibling folders at a glance. I switch this on the first time I use file explorer on a new system. If Microsoft's new file explorer won't have a tree view (the screenshots I know look like it), this explorer will be garbage IMHO.

I don't see it being much different than the PowerPC to x86 transition. Apple did a good job with that cross compatibility emulation. If they can do that again then it will be a seamless transition that end users will hardly notice. I have a feeling Microsoft will eventually offer Windows on ARM ISOs just like the x86/x64 flavor; it's just a matter of time. So I doubt Bootcamp support will be going anywhere either. Agree. Apple has done this before and they will do the same again. As a buyer you won't need to think about the chip inside, it will be seamless and it will work like you expect. The emulation will work, the Apps you want and need will work. There will be no reason not to buy an ARM Mac. This is a very different approach to MS with ARM machines where you cant recommend anyone buy one. Yeah...except it wasn’t seamless last time and won’t be next time. Stop drinking the koolaid.

  48. She sure talked a lot without saying much....this struck me as she doesn't really understand "Defund the Police" ... "I would like to know that if I'm having trouble, that I can call on the public servants and the police and that they will protect me and my family. So I just don't think that's a good idea." The "movement" isn't to remove the police force ... it is to invest more into the community (education, housing, mental health...services that shouldn't require a man/woman with a gun, etc) and to shrink the roles of the police...so they can focus on crimes and reduce the demands placed on the police. You wouldn't know this by watching the likes of Tucker Carlson or Sean Hannity. They want you to believe that "Defund the Police" means to abolish the police...which isn't the case. Would such a thing work? No idea. Can we do better than what we have now...I would hope so. Heartless, immature cruel brat. I don't really hate many people...but this dude....😡

  50. The Windows 10 May 2020 Update apparently breaks Intel Optane Memory

You know what else "isn't what it used to be"? Hardware. There is -so- much more of it than 15 years ago. Thousands of motherboards relased over the last decade.... dozens of new CPUs every year.... a whole bunch of different GPU chipsets, multiplied by many vendors selling several variants of each chipset.... a much wider variety of complex connectivity standards than ever before.... many, many combinations of RAM sizes, speeds, and latency timings. On and on and on. And that's before we get to quality variances with individual pieces of hardware. Maybe a particular component on a particular entry-level motherboard doesn't do very well with a certain amount of PSU ripple, and will cause some kind of failure once every month or so, and only in areas where the user's original source of power isn't clean. Do you see? It is basically impossible to test everything now. Sorry but that is a poor excuse, I am old enough to remember in the 90's being even more to choose from, Cyrix CPUs were also a mainstream thing and GPUs didn't even have the standard like the mainly two choices you see today between AMD and Nvidia, and their respective lines of GPUs also are based off one same-gen of tech (Pascal, Turing etc). 68k is correct and it isn't limited to Microsoft, companies keep putting beta products in the hands of consumers who have to suffer throughn the first gen of hardware and software releases due to a lack of proper QA.
