Zoom will offer end-to-end encryption to all users
Lil Alien and 6 others reacted to AmazingRando for a topic
This is now worn thin. First they said they were encrypted. Then it was proven they were not. Then they said they would add encryption. But they didn't. Then they bought a company that does encryption to bulk up their efforts. Then they say they will do E2EE for paying customers. Then they bow down to Chinese censorship. Now E2EE is free for all?! Totally untrustworthy and rash sense of business. No thanks.7 points -

Windows 10 version 2004's new feature may fix Chrome's high RAM usage
excalpius and one other reacted to warrenrumak for a topic
I think it was more down to the fact that MS changed the browser and that forced them to make optimisation changes to the OS No, that's not it at all. The "segment heap" capability has been in Windows 10 since the original release in 2015. It has always been the default for Windows 10 store apps. Yes, that includes the original Edge, right back to day 1. But it is not the default for Win32 apps because of backwards compatibility concerns. There's a whole section on this in Mark Russinovich's Windows Internals 7 book. All Microsoft is really doing here is restoring the use of the segment heap in Edge. Chrome could've made this change years ago if they'd known about it.... Then why does this require Version 2004 and later in order for it to work? Note: Google needs the latest SDK in order to make the changes to Chrome, though at the moment Google does not have access to this SDK, so therefore have not been able to at any point in the past had the opportunity to change Chrome to use this feature. It doesn't. Chrome's dev team actually got segment heap working last summer/fall on Windows 10 1809, which you can read about here: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=982452 and here: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/ch...um/issues/detail?id=1014701 What changed in 20H1 is that Microsoft added in the ability to opt into the (otherwise optional) segment heap capability by defining it in the application manifest XML file, that sits alongside the executable. Before 20H1, you had to set a flag in the executable itself, which would probably make the executable file incompatible with any version of Windows prior to 20H1. Alternatively you can set a flag in the registry.... and the problem with that is that it requires Administrator privileges to write that registry key, and it requires defining the full path. Chrome's exe path actually changes with every update, so the updater would require elevation to admin for every update. As I'm sure you know, Chrome (and its updater) are designed to not require admin privileges whatsoever, so that's a non-starter. This new flag in the application manifest gets around both these problems.... Windows versions prior to 20H1 will just ignore the XML element that it doesn't understand, and run Chrome/Edge with the standard NT heap algorithm. Saying that the SDK is required is a mis-statement. The 20H1 SDK documents this new manifest XML setting and provides an update to the XML schema for the manifest. Using an SDK prior to 19041 will cause build warnings that basically say "Hey, I don't know about that XML element". The build will succeed, but the Chrome team doesn't want any spurious warnings when building Chrome. That is discussed here: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/ch...um/issues/detail?id=1089996 Now you know. Next time, read the article and associated links before firing up the complaint machine.2 points -

Microsoft Launcher beta adds a third row to the dock and app drawer folders

What OnePlus phone do you have? I think the launcher doesn't support high refresh rates, which might explain the difference you mention. I've noticed it too. I have the OnePlus 7 Pro. Doesn't support the high refresh rate? I hope it will eventually. This launcher is growing on me. Yeah, if you're used to the 90Hz refresh rate of the default launcher, it will probably feel a little slow. Android 11 is supposed to be adding some new capabilities that make it easier for apps to adjust to high refresh rates, so hopefully Microsoft will get on that.1 point -

That is, in fact, the OTHER reason I prefer HP (either inkjet or laser); the JetDirect print service for their inkjet AND laser printers. JetDirect is even available for Android - so even phones and tablets have no excuses.1 point -

Microsoft starts automatically updating Windows 10 1809 users to Windows 10 2004
samw61 reacted to PUC_Snakeman for a topic
because you would be on an almost perpetual major version upgrade if you just went to the next one wouldn't you? Better to upgrade once and not need to do a major upgrade for two years than 6 month? It comes down to the reason people delay installing updates, then, doesn't it? If the reason is they don't want to install something too new and risky that could cause issues, they'd probably be okay installing an update slightly more often to a version significantly more stable. If the reason is they just don't like installing updates then yeah, the less often the better, but if that brand-spanking-new release has problems that impact them, they'll just become grouchy old internet commenters and hate updates even more. One reason feels a little more childish and pointless than the other. They don't want to upgrade. They just want it to work. I agree with you that it may not be wise to upgrade them to a release that is less than 2 months in release, but Microsoft has decided to go that route, and rely on cumulative updates to fix up any problems. So, basically, users will only upgrade every 2-2.5 years, and might have a small patch of time where things are getting ironed out, each time. It's sort of reasonable, I guess. And is loads better than getting a new build twice a year.1 point -
Germany launches coronavirus contact tracing app
dodgetigger reacted to InfiniteLuke for a topic
That's why Germany used a decentralized system so there is no data to be used for other purposes. Each phone generates random identifies which it sends out and which change regularely and locally logs all identifiers it receives. Only the random identifiers of infected people are transmitted to a server and those identifiers can not be traced back to the person and there is no location data. I don't know how other apps work, but I'm quite positive about the approach to privacy here in Germany.1 point -

Microsoft blocks Windows 10 May 2020 Update on PCs with Memory Integrity enabled
waysidesc reacted to samw61 for a topic
Finally someone has mentioned the connection to HD Graphics 3000 issue! I thought this may have been the case as I was reading this article, and confirmed it when it mentioned display drivers! It made my computer basically unusable (XGA on laptop 1080p screen, unable to output to 4k screen) when I first tried installing 2004 a few months ago. Never had a problem with a windows update before, and it was easy to roll back, but was holding off installing this update which isn't me. Going to give it another shot now I've disabled Memory Integrity. This Thinkpad Yoga from 2013 has some life in her yet! Please let me know how it works for you. I have had to permanently disable memory integrity ... which is very painful to me ... since Intel has not released an updated driver that is compatible with this feature. On the other hand ... Microsoft finally updated the notification that appears when memory integrity cannot be enabled — it now pinpoints the problem and informs the user and, for driver incompatibilities it shows other details such as release dates and version numbers ... It is either proper resolution and no security feature ... or vice verse ( in which case it falls back to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter ). But ... I love this Latitude ... ! Alas, I am blocked from updating, and seeing this: https://www.neowin.net/news/mi...is-blocked-on-their-systems Sounds like a big update if it's breaking so much stuff. Hope they get it working soon!1 point -
